The wind whipped and whistled round the fur on the grey wolf’s cheeks. It was late at night but the moon was out, casting a pale eerie light on the objects below. She ploughed on through the thick snow determined to reach her destination. She felt something cold touch her nose. The wolf looked up to the black midnight sky to see a small showering of snowflakes starting to fall. Suddenly, there was a CRACK! The she-wolf raised her head in alarm and swung her body round to the direction of the noise. She sniffed the cold air, every breath creating a small cloud of steam. She narrowed her eyes. Fox…

The wind was gaining speed and with a ghostly wail, it sent snow into her eyes. She determinedly plunged on. The wolf would let nothing stop her. Slowly, the wind ceased and she could see clearly again. She shivered, it was a very bitter December’s night and she wasn’t used to the harshness of a cold frosty winter. The stars twinkled in the sky. She looked up to them, letting them lead her to her destination. She trudged on across a moonlit path, walking and walking, not wanting to stop.

Finally, she reached the warmth of her cave. Small bundles of jumped up at her, tugging at her ears and biting at her paws. The she wolf dropped what she had in her mouth – a skinny rabbit. Food was scarce at winter and she was looking pretty scrawny herself. She yawned then sprawled on the cave floor. Her cubs lay beside her. All was still on the harsh December night, all but the stars which twinkled from high above.
