A short story for Creative Writing class, about my character General. Or is it about a US soldier? Their stories are not that different.

General © catwhohas14tails

We're stuck in a dark room, stored away, like mere objects. Only one light is on near the front, almost teasing us, like it's the end for us. But it'll just be the beginning. We're never kept here long. Even though we'd rather stay here forever than leave.

There was only one terrible thing outside of here. None of us really wanted it. It was death. Either kill or be killed. There was nothing else. At least I think there was nothing else. I think I might remember a time when things were nicer. But I can't be sure. I was trained in nothing else, but to kill. Same with every other person here.

I realized something sickening not too long ago. We were earning someone money for this. Some man just up and said "Let's make them fight for us." And have been forcing us ever since. True, some of us did have a choice. But those like me didn't. We had no other way to survive but to do what was expected of us.

The only reason I'm here today is because of all of the others I've killed. I'm not even sure if it's wrong or not anymore. I'm told it isn't and I think like that, deep down I know I shouldn't, but I have to. I want to live my life already.

I didn't want to be here and please anyone. We're seen as "devoted" and that we love to serve. But that's just an idea. Who wants to serve someone you don't owe or doesn't owe you back? Who wants to serve someone who sends you here anyway? This hellhole. This horrid place that had nothing but noise, dirt, and blood.

No matter how many I killed, it never seemed to please. Even though that was the initial goal. I remember the last foe I killed. He was darker than me in complexion, and had fewer scars on his body than myself. He was a few years younger than me, and probably just barely begun to fight. He looked so frightened, even though he more than likely encountered worse in his day. His eyes were so wide, half-hopeful that I would just roll over and let him kill me.

But I was merciless. I didn't even give him a chance, even though he lay there begging me to spare his life. For the fear that he would still kill me, I ended his life first. I ended the life of a person physically incapable of hurting me.

The one before him was older, but with even less scars, and insane. It was he who didn't give me much time to react, because through all of his noise, he was trying to carve my throat out. I dodged and attacked and dodged for what seemed like hours.

A large chunk of my brow was sliced, and blood was dripping heavily into my eye. He nearly got me again when I ducked too soon and sliced the end of my ear in half. I nearly panicked at the thought of screwing up worse and being killed by that maniac. But basic instinct knew that panic led to death, so I had no choice but to keep level-headed the entire time.

Eventually my "partner" did what he could to help, which wasn't any more than mere cursing and false words of encouragement. The coward wouldn't jump in to help, even if things grew ugly. I couldn't ever rely on that man. The idiot was just breaking my concentration. When I finally collected myself, though I was still bleeding, I pretended my enemy was him and after the long scuffle, I grabbed him around his neck and broke it.

"That was great, General," he would tell me, roughly grabbing me behind my neck as his way of fictitious approval. And no matter how many times I shook him off and sneered at him, with as much of a wish for him to die like anyone else like him; he would still treat me like I was the greatest thing in the world. But only in front of others. Once the doors closed, it was an entirely different story.

We would fight each other constantly, only instead of one on one, it would be me against the heel of his heavy boot. The only reason I ever attacked him was to protect myself, like he was no better than my enemies, no matter if we were on the same side or not. He was my enemy. Everyone here was my enemy. If I ever left this place, and found better people, I would never have thought that they would see me as their enemy.

If you want to know more about General, please read his profile here here http://baltosource.timduru.org/en/chars/General/2720.html

And review his character, I'd really appreciate it ^^

The MCR-my!
I just have to say that I love this piece.
You seem to have a talent for making words visual, and making it like a film. This story was short, sweet and to the poiint, which is what appeals to mii very much so.
What I don't enjoii, though, is that you cut it off without even saiing if you were making a sequel or anything. Hope you continue!

Ah. As I said, forgive me for reading into it. The context of comparing it to a U.S. soldier right in the intro kind of led to that conclusion. As it pertains to dogs, I quite agree. Dog fighting is... agh, it's just beyond words (although this comes pretty close). Nice to see you lending your skill to a good cause.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. But it wasn't intended to be anti-military at all (tho there are a few soldiers who think like this, I'm sure). It was pro-pitbull terrier.

I have to say, this is considerably better than I've come to expect based on some of your other writing. You did an impressive job of putting emotion into your words. And as it relates to the military, it gives a deeply impacting perspective.
But if you were trying to convince your readers of an anti-military view (forgive me if I read into it too much, but you did talk about depth as I recall), you haven't succeeded on my part.

Looking for one to take me in
I really liked this story. If you turned it into a series, or just another fic, I'd read and reccomend. As usual.

Well I definitely liked it. I feel sorry for General, and even more so for the last dog her killed. Dog fighting is one of my most despised acts of cruelty. I liked this story- it was pretty deep.
