down for a long time, slowly he realist what was happened. Then he
started howling as loud as he could. He kept on going for a while, on the other
side of the cliff walked the white wolf away like nothing was happened. Balto
turned around and started walking troughs Steele. “You miserable dog…” While
Balto looked him in the eyes. Steele was trying to stand up, but the pain of
his wound still prevented him from doing that. “I hope your satisfied, because
it’s the last thing you ever be.” “What are you going to do with me? Asked Steele”
“Nothing, I gone leave you here, your wounds should do the rest.” Steele looked
at one of his legs widths was turning red from the blood.
“No, Balto,
please, don’t leave me here ”, Steele tried to look innocent, but Balto walked
past him. “You cant leave me here now.” But Balto had enough of Steele. When he was just a few passes past Steele, he spotted
the white wolf coming his way.
Behind him
walked another smaller, wet white wolf. It was Spike, he somehow survived his
fall and the freezing water. Balto was running trough the two, “Spike your
alive?” “I… I think
I’ve got some help from him,” while Spike looked at Kemo. Balto clearly
recognized Kemo from the first time when he had to accept that he was part
wolf. “I am having it cold, I have bin in the water for to long”, Spike was
shaking…
“We have to
get you warm” said Balto. “And what about Steele? We cannot leave him there?”
“You want to save him?” Balto was a bit surprised about what Spike was saying.
“I wane show him that I am not afraid of him anymore.” Spike walked over to Steele.
“You would not have anything to do with this?” asked Balto to Kemo. Slowly
turned Kemo his head, this time the decision came from Spike himself. Spike
came up to Steele who was heavily bleeding, “You have won…, just leave me now
and lets be done with it…”
“No Steele,
your not my enemy, you never was... My biggest enemy was my fear itself, it
controlled my live as pride controlled yours. Now I don’t have anything to fear
anymore, because I defeated it. And now you have defeated your enemy as well
when you said:
“Just run
away now you still can, I’ll will distract him!” You showed that your pride
wasn’t imported anymore. Spike laid himself to rest against Steele, so he could
use the warmth of Steele to get himself warm. Spike pushed his paw on the
bleeding wound of Steele and stopped the bleeding by pressing on it. Steele had
to contain himself because of the pain, but eventually calmed down.
Spike turned to Balto: “Balto, go back and get help, Steele cannot go back on his on strength.” “You sure?” Asked Balto. “Yes, go now.” Balto turned around and started running, as fast as he could to get help. Spike and Steele stayed behind, Steele was finally relaxing a bit, he felt very strangely comfortable with Spike close to him. He had to though about what was happened, clearly he had given up his pride. And Balto who wanted to leave him behind was now rushing back to get help for him. While thinking he remembers the moment he stared right in the eyes of the white wolf. Who was that that wolf, with made him change his mind? Steele closed his eyes and laid his head next to Spike, for some reason he felt save that Spike was next to him…
The rescue…
After ours
of running Balto got finally back to Nome.
The disappearance of Spike and Steele’s was already know by the unmans. Kodi’s
team was back from the trip and the other team was not complete without Steele.
Mr. Gunnar had assembled teams who where searching the woods. Balto jumped up
to Gunnar. “Hee, easy Balto easy…” But Balto had to make Gunnar clear that he
had found Steele and Spike. He run forwards and backwards between Gunnar and
the direction he was coming from. Gunnar walked up to Kodi’s team who were
still strapped in front of the sled. “March” And the dogs pulled him forwards
after Balto, who lead the way. “Its good to see you again dad, you know where
Spike is?” “Spare your breath son, we have to go as fast we can.” “Right”, Kodi
used all of his power to go faster. After ours of running they gotten to the
hills, there was no snow.
Gunnar stepped
of the sled, “you guys wait here, I go further with Balto.” “Good luck
dad”, jelled Kodi. The hole
team started howling for Balto. “Don’t worry, I will find them back.” Balto and
Gunnar walked further and disappeared between the rocks and bunches.
The team
stopped howling, “So you think they will find Spike and Steele back?” “Hey, its
my dad your talking about” said Kodi indignantly. “I will never doubt my
father!” “True Kodi, but maybe Spike could be heavily wounded
or something.” “I love your positive thinking Raplh, but for now… Shut up!.” Minutes
past by while the team waited patiently, “Hee look they are back.” Between the
rocks appeared Gunnar with a dog over his shoulder. “Steele?” Hey what’s the
deal with Steele? We where not looking for him.” But Gunnar placed the wounded Steele
carefully on the sled. “Oh great,
now he is back again” said Ralph. But Steele didn’t hear it, he was unconscious
because of the loss of blood.
“It was my
decision to rescue him!” Kodi looked back, next to Balto was Spike standing,
still wet but alive. “Spike!!! Your alive!” The hole team started howling
including Balto while Spike was placed on the sled next to Steele. “March” And
the team ran back to Nome,
with Balto leading the way.
Goodbye…
The team
arrived back to Nome.
“Dr. Welsh, I have two dogs that need you’re attention urgently.” Dr .Welsh and
Gunnar took the dogs inside. Kodi and his team made themselves lose of sled and
returned back to the boiler room. There was nothing they could do now, hopefully
the unmans could make them better. Balto returned back to his ship, where he
talked for a while with Boris before he wend to sleep.
The next day:…
Slowly opened Balto his eyes, it was already somewhere in the afternoon. “Good afternoon, Balto.” While Boris passed by on the deck. “Afternoon? Did I slept that long?” “Of course you did, first the search and then 10 ours of continues running make even a great sled dog like you tired.” “Oooeeeehaaaa”, Balto made a big yawn and stood up. “Hee, watch where you aiming that breath of yours.” “Sorry Boris, do you know anything about Spike or Steele?” “No, I heaved bin there yet.” “Oh… well there is one way to find out, your coming Boris?”
In the streets of Nomewas Jenna already waiting for Balto and Boris, “how are you doing today?” “Good Jenna, as soon as we know how Spike and Steele are doing.” “Well, Spike is now in the boiler room, with the other dogs”, knew Jenna. And in the boiler room was indeed little Spike at his use well spot next to the boilers. “ Its almost like you never get it warm enough.” Spike looked up and saw Balto. “BALTO.” “Easy Spike, you don’t fall of cliffs everyday.” “Thanks for saving my life back there, Balto.” “Its was nothing, I do this for living” laughed Balto. “Do you know what happened to Steele?” asked Jenna. “No… he is still at the doctors home I think, I heard that his sled-team is leaving tomorrow.” “Then we have to come back tomorrow, said Jenna.” Boris: They will probably leave early, why don’t we stay here?” “Yeah, stay Balto” said the other dogs. “Alright, alright, I’ll stay. Tomorrow we will see what happened to Steele.”
The next morning:…
“WAKE UP!!!” Ralph ran into the boiler room, the sled team is getting ready to leave! Balto, Spike, Jenna, and the others ran outside to check it out. They saw the other dogs already strapped in and ready to go, but Steele wasn’t among them. “Where is Steele?” asked Jenna to the dog-team, “Still inside” answered one of the dogs while he pointed to the post-office. At that moment the they saw Gunnar walking out with Steele, he was limping because of his wound and bandage that covered it. He walked over to Balto, Spike, and Kodi. For a moment Steele didn’t not know what to say. “Well, I am leaving now, I…guess I will be back some day, annddd…” “Your gone be back soon?” Asked Spike. “What? I… well my paw, I… have to wait till its healed again…”stammeredSteele. “Listen”, Steele manned himself: “This is gonna sound strange but… I want to apologize for the trouble I have cost, it was wrong of me to let my pride control my live. I am sorry for what I have done to you kid.” Steele turned to Balto: “Balto, I know its bin a long time, and I am definitely to late to talk this right. But I hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me some day.” Balto had to think for a second, but soon he started to smile. “I think I can do that…” “Steele, Your coming up here?” Steele’s boss pointed to the sled, “You cannot run yet, you must give that paw some rest.” “I have to go now, but I am gone be back some day, then hopefully I get you guys to know a little better.” “Goodbye Uncle Steele…” “Uncle?” Steele was almost frozen to the ground. “You heard me,” said Spike. “I think its important to have family again, so… Goodbye uncle Steele…” Steele started to smile, “Your still full of surprises kid, all right, goodbye little nephew.” With that said, Steele got up the sled. “March” And the dogs started to move out of Nome, Spike started the pursuit after the sled-dogs, on a hill he kept hauling as loud as he could. This time not hauling from pain of fear, but because he had friends and family again. He felled the strength from hiss mother inside of him, running trough his veins. He heard the voice of his mother in the wind, “I am proud of you, my son.” He could see the sled-team disappear after the horizon, “one day” he tough, one day he would be running in a sled-team to…
