While Balto turned away the wolfdog started eating, “Where
does this guy come from?” Asked Balto to the group, “We found him outside.” “And
do you his name?” “No, we didn’t asked, he came here just for shelter.” “You
have seen that he is just like you dad? He is a wolfdog to, just like you,”
said Kodi. Balto took a good look at him. “Now you are mention it, he does have
a lot of wolf characteristics.”
After a while
Balto decided to talk again to the fringed wolfdog. “Hee there, my name is Balto,
I heard that you are… also a wolfdog?” A little bit confused stared the wolfdog
back, and could barely say yes. “So… What’s your name?” The wolfdog stared to
the ground, and said: “Spike, my… my
name is Spike…” “So Spike, where do you
come from?” “I don’t know, nowhere I guess.” “You got any family?” asked Kodi
on his turn. “No, I don’t have any….
more. I mean not…” “More? What do you mean anymore?” “Listen, it’s
not something I like to talk about, I must go now.” Suddenly Spike jumped up
and made a run for the door. He almost run over Jenna en Boris, who just came
in. “Never I have seen dog loving snow so much.” While Boris pulled his head
out of the snow. “Who was that?” Asked Jenna. “I don’t know, but I am going
after him” Before Jenna could make any argument, Balto made a run for it. The
trail in the snow wasn’t hard to follow; soon he kept up with Spike. “Hee, I am
a professional sled dog, I can keep up running longer then you can be alive.”
“I just want to talk with you!” Spike stopped running, “Why are you so
interested in my buss nice?” That came almost offensive out of Spike’s mouth. “Listen,”
while Balto sits down, “you are a wolfdog, I am a wolfdog, I understand you
better than anyone else, and I like to know you a little better. I never spook
to anther wolfdog before.”
“Now… where do you come from, and what is it with your family?” Asked Balto again. “Its a long story, you wouldn’t like it anyway.” “I got time” assured Balto. “Alright” while Spike sat down next to Balto. “My mother lived in a wolf pack up in the mountains. One day she was alone in the woods, she med a dog from a village nearby. They fell in love with each other but they… had to do it secretly, the wolf pack had strict rules against it. It went good for weeks, but the wolf pack found out anyway. She was banned from the group and if they saw the dog again, he would be killed. The group would supply my mother with foot ever day because she could not get it herself, but they prohibit any contact with her. When I was born she taught me everything about the wolf pack, hunting, and everything a wolf needed to know. One day I tried to get back in the wolf pack, I played for a while with the other wolfs. It was maybe the best time of my live. Until the parents of the little wolfs showed up, they threatened me never to come back again. Or they would stop supplying foot for my mother and me. One day when mom was out there to get food from the pack, they gotten into a discussion about me. My mother could not take care of me for much longer because she was very sick. The wolf pack refused to take care of me, when she got desperate, she and one of the wolfs started to fight. She was furious because she knew that if the wolf pack would not help, then nobody would. In her desperate fight to help me, she and the other wolf both fall over the edge of the mountain. I could only watch her falling to her death, and now there was nobody that would help me. The wolf pack moved out because there wasn’t much food left, leaving me behind, I was on my own. With just the knowledge my mother had told me I serviced, it has bin so ever since. When I got to towns and village’s like these, they chased me away.” By this time tears where popping up in Spike’s eyes, he began to breath and talk faster. “I only go now into villages when I absolutely have to…for food and shelter.” “And what about other wolf packs?” asked Balto who looked very disturbing. “I don’t wane go back there, I never wanted to have anything to do with wolf packs again. Besides I can take care of myself…”
Balto didn’t believe that for a second, the white wolf tears where now rolling over his fur making it look grey. “No, you can’t take care of yourself, you’ve got yourself almost killed out there if they didn’t let you in. If you like to, you can stay with us.” Spike did not understand first what Balto was saying, but Balto reassured him that he was welcome to stay…
In the days following, made Spike a lot of new friends, Spike stayed a bit shy, but everyone was starting to like him. He even dare to walk around in the town with people around him. Kodi told him everything about the sled dogs, and that maybe he could be one to, some day. So they started training, ever day they would run around in the wild to build up Spike’s condition. And in the afternoon he played with Muk an Luk or other friends. For help he could ask Balto if he needed to, because now he wasn’t alone anymore.
Three weeks later…...
“Let it out
of your head that you will never do that again with my breakfast!!!!!” Boris was
heavily shouting against Muk and Luk because they had buried Boris food under a
mountain of snow. Now he could dig it out of there. “Away!!! Make distance for
big mountain of snow where food is under!” “But uncle Boris,” mention Muk, “Luk
and me can remove the snow for you, isn’t that right, he Luk?”
Luk: mmmmm……mmmmmmm….. While he was shaking
his head up and down…“No,
absolutely NO, he is probably going to sit on it anyway when he finds it, now
go away, play hide
and seek or something…. "
That’s was only
excuse that Muk and Luk needed to ran of into the woods. While Boris
was rescuing his breakfast, Balto had woke up from all the noise, in the
morning. “Trouble with Muk and Luk again
Boris?”
“TROUBLE???? HAH, I never HAVE trouble when polar
bears are running around in range of 15 yards.” “Yeah I can see that… Are the other
dogs already back, Boris? I expect them today arriving with the new mail
delivery.” “No, no
dogs where seen when sun went up… Now let me be with my foot while I try to rescue
it…” Balto took
that advise and went to the town, a crowd had gathered in the main street.
Balto knew
that the other dog team was coming soon then. He spotted his son Kodi, next to Spike
in the crowd. Kodi was explaining that he was leader of the replacement team.
The telegraph dog Morse had warned them that the dog-team coming was tired and needed
replacement for the final stage. Balto
meanwhile was sitting next to them, “Your ready for it Kodi?” “Ready as I ever be, besides its just a five
day trip. And of course we got to go back.” “So Spike
isn’t going with you?” “Naa…. he isn’t ready yet, but I have trained hard with
him and soon he will be ready for it. Right, Spike?” Spike, shy as always,
shakes his head, but knew he had to urn the trust of the people to proof
himself. Before he could say anything else the crowd started yelling. The other
dog team was in sight, “There they are” Kodi got excited, they watched the team
getting closer.
“BALTO!!!!”
Jenna, came running to Balto...”Jenna… what’s the matter?” He… he is on the team. “Who?” Jenna could barley
say it: St.. Steele!
“Steele? Is
he back?” Balto`s couldn’t believed it.
The dog that almost ruined his live was back again. “Who is Steele?” asked Spike.
“Steele is a black Alaskan Malamute who only thinks about himself. He is a mean
dog that only thinks about his proud. You know
the story that I told you guys about that I saved the people from the daisies?
That dog is
coming this way, he almost ruined my live while I tried to help them…”
“Aaaah how
sweet, you telling them your beautiful story about yourself?” Balto stared
right in the eyes of Steele. “So you have grown up, I see….hahaha…” While Steele
was coming closer, he took a good look at Kodi and Spike. “Ahaaa… Bin
busy, have we Balto?” Steele was enjoying this, to finally make his (what he
believed was his enemy) ridicules. “So… And what’s your name, while Steele
investigated Kodi fully.” “I am Kodi, lead-dog of my team.” “Good for you, and
what is your name?” While Steele turned to Spike. Spike felt himself back two weeks
ago when he met Balto for the first time. “Sp.. Spike…”
“What was
that? I cant hear you,” laughed Steele loud. “Back off Steele, he is with me.” Balto
jumped in between the two dogs. “Oehhh, I am scared” Steele did like he was
afraid of Balto. “He doesn’t belong to you, isn’t it Balto?” “We found him”,
Balto looked almost like he could attack Steele at any second. “MMhaha,
alright, well I have to go now, but I am sure that we will see each other again.”
While Steele moved on, Balto could see the rest of Steele’s team. Also Alaskan
Malamute dogs, seamed like they belonged to the new “Steele gang”. They looked
back without saying or doing anything.
“Alright
guys we have talk, follow me.” Balto explained that as long as Steele was in
town the dogs weren’t save. “This means for Spike and you Jenna. Kodi, as long
you are gone with your team you won’t have nothing to fear. But I want you to
be careful on your way, you never know what Steele has learned while he was
away. Also I don’t want none of you come close to of his team dog’s, they could
be just as bad. Got it?” After 30
minutes Kodi and his team had to go further with the mail, they had to make the
final stage to bring the post. “Ill be careful dad and don’t worry, we wont get
into trouble.”
“Good luck
son, I have faith in you!” When the sled team left, Balto run along with the
team for a while, he kept looking until they where out site. “Hopefully they
will return as one team, save and sound.” With these thoughts Balto
