Kodi is back…

This story begins in the hills outside Nome, a lonely dog was sitting on top of one of the hills, looking down on Nome. It looked like it was waiting for something, sometimes it looked up at the dark sky. Seems like a storm was coming his way. “They will make it in time…” assured Boris.  Boris kept Balto company on the hill, Balto was waiting until his son Kodi came back from the Mail delivery. “Hope your right, Boris” “Balto, what’s different? Kodi has run for months as a lead-dog. Why worry about it now?” “I am worrying because of the storm that is coming, I don’t think Kodi is up for it to navigate trough tough weather.” Balto looked up at the big dark clouds over the mountains. “No, need to worry Balto, my goose instinct says that they are gonna make it in time before storm breaks lose.” “And what makes you so sure of that, Boris?” “Well, I see dogs running into town right now.” Balto looked over the edge where Boris was standing, he spotted just the last sled dogs running in to Nome. “I will never doubt your goose instinct, Boris. Come on, lets see Kodi…” Balto ran of back to Nome. “Hey wait up, gooses don’t run fast, Balto.” “No, gooses can fly, Boris.” Balto stopped for a moment to let Boris catch up. “You know I don’t like flying a lot.” “Well, maybe you should do it more often, maybe you like it some day.” “Yeah, we will see about that.” After a short time they arrived back in Nome. “Dad,” Kodi walked over to Balto. “I am glad your back, Kodi.” “Nothing can beat my sled team, dad.” “Now you are a exaggerating, Kode...”

“Just kidding dad, you’re coming with us?” “No, I am going to Jenna’s place and then back with Boris to the boat before hell breakers lose”. “Alright, than I see you tomorrow, dad.” Kodi walked with rest of his team back to the boiler-room. Balto went to Jenna, to wish her good night. On the way back to the boat, it started snow. “You see Boris, this why I don’t like Kodi out there. He is experienced, but he has to be more careful.” “I know, Balto, but I believe that he has enough experience to run in a storm now.” Balto: “I don’t know, you have to think ahead sometimes. Like… like your nephews did.” Balto looked at his boat and the two polar bears which where sitting next to it. “Uncle BOooris…”  “Oh no…” Was the only thing Boris could say before the biggest one cuddled him almost flat. “We are so happy to see you, uncle Boris.” Said Muk. “Me too, why are you two doing here?” “Well uncle Boris, we saw the storm approaching, so we thought that we could stay in the boat until the storm is over.” “Permission granted”, while Balto jumped into the boat. “Alright, everyone on board.” Boris roused everyone on the boat. “And lay still when you are asleep, last time Luk almost crushed me.” Muk: “No problem uncle Boris.”

Later that night the storm picked up, the wind was howling against the homes of Nome. The sled dogs found themselves comfortable in the boiler room. “You see!? I knew that we are home before the storm!” “Yeah right, we just got lucky that’s all, Kodi”. “Besides that, we have gotten through more worse storms then this one.” “Hah, and if I remember correctly, then you’re the one that always started whining when we didn’t made it in time, Raplh” Laughed Kirby. “Thanks for the compliment, Kirby” Like you wore such a great help today.” “Somebody want some food?” shouted Dipsy to end the useless conversation. “No, thanks, we had enough, you can eat the rest.” “Don’t mind if I do” while Dipsy turned her head back into the bag that she had taken from the food supply. “Now if when can get it quiet in here , I would like to get some sleep, thank you very much…”

Arrival of Spike…

Meanwhile the storm continued to grow, snow was building up in the streets. You couldn’t see farther then 10 feet. On a hill not far away, appeared a creature in the night. It had trouble getting trough the thick pack of snow, it looked around on the hill and was considering to go into the town. Finally it did, slowly it moved into the streets, looking constantly around himself. Like it could be attacked from any direction, by any one. The town looked like it was deserted, there where no lights on, and no people on the streets, after all, who is going to walk in a storm late at night? The creature looked in some rabble in a small alley of the town, like it was looking for something, but it moved on. It still looked around himself, the creature didn’t looked any comfortable at all, being in the streets. When it crossed the street it saw the windows from the mine-building where the other dogs had gathered to stay warm.

The creature kept himself low to the ground and close to objects so he could not be seen. Slowly it moved around the building, although there was light coming from the windows, it didn’t hear any voices. When investigating the place it noticed the boxes, barrels and crates, staked up together against one site of the building. The window was about 4 meters of the ground, if it could clime the pile of boxes it maybe could look inside.

Carefully it jumped up on one of the crates, it had to be very careful, it was very slippery. Then it jumped to a barrel further up, until it got to the last crate. It could not go any higher an the window was almost in his range. If he could stand-up he was able to see inside. One more time it looked around to see if it was save, then it reached out with it paws to the window. Almost there, the creature was leaning with his forepaws against the window, and his back paws on the crate. If he could stand on his tows he could have a look inside. Before he had even figure that part out, the crate beneath him slipped away, with no grip on the window with is forepaws it fell back straight trough one of the crates, it screamed from the sort but heavy pain. It hit one of the barrels and felled back into the snow. The tower of barrels, crates and other things was coming down around it with a lot of noise…

“Did you hear that???” “With the size of your ears you can hear anything, Dipsy.” “I heard it to, there is definitely somebody is out there... Humans?” Maybe, but it didn’t sound like that, “Balto or Boris perhaps?” “No they are on the boat” knew Kodi, “why would they come here?” “Okay, I go out and see.” Kirby stretched out and walked to the door, cold wind and snow was thrown in his face. Kirby walked around until he saw the rabble and in the middle something that looked like to be alive. “Who is there?” When Kirby’s eyes where used to the dark he, could see something that looked like a wolf. “Who are you?” he asked.

But because of the impact it took from the fall it could not answer the question. Let alone stand on his paws. “Right… if you don’t answer me then good night”, Kirby turned away and would walk back to the door. He didn’t trust it anyway and was irritated because it waked him up… “Wa… Wait… “Finally the wolf was well enough to say something. P… please… I am looking for a place to stay… “And you would do that by climbing in a pile of rouble? “I… I was just looking if it was save in there… “Yeah right… Good night stranger…” “No please… Let me in…” The wolf was well enough now to stand just on his paws. “I have it to cold, please, just let me in for one night.” “You’re look like a wolf, you can survive out there,” said Kirby with suspicion. “No, that’s not true, I am not just a wolf, I am part dog to…” Where had Kirby heard that story before? “Alright follow me, but just for one night.” Kirby walked back to the door with the wolf behind him. “Alright here we are”, while Kirby walked in. “So what was it? “ “Him,” behind Kirby stumbled the young white wolfdog  in. It kept his head en tail down, it didn’t dare to look around, it hadn’t the courage to do so.

Everyone was looking to that strange terrified thing that was walking to one of the boilers. “ I found him behind the building”, said Kirby proud. “He just wanted to stay here for the night, just to worm up.” The wolf fell down next to kettle, it didn’t care what they where saying about him, if could stay here he would be fine. Kodi walked up to him, he saw the characteristics that his dad had to, “you just look like me father, you know… Are you a wolfdog to?” But the wolfdog was already to far away in a dream to answer that question…

Spike’s story…

“Good Morning everyone!” While Balto walked in. “Could you not come in a bit later, I was just heaving a good dream.” “Its beautiful outside Kodi, why stay here?” “Because its warm in here?” “Not a good reason, has Dipsy arranged the breakfast already?” “Now I have,” Dipsy walked in with another bag of dog food. “Let’s eat”, sounded it from behind, and all the dogs rust in to get some food. All, except one, the unknown wolfdog was still asleep, you can tell that it had a nightmare. His paws were make short movements, and he was shaking al the time. But no one paid any attention to the wolfdog. “Heavy storm wasn’t it? The whole town is busy cleaning up the streets.” “I heard that the next mail is suspended a week or two, gives us enough time to rest.” Meanwhile, the wolfdog’s nightmare became worse, he was shaking all over his body, and made small noises. Suddenly he waked up screaming, his white fur and tail was standing right up, his big blue eye’s looking scared in all directions. Balto turned around, “who are you?” While he walked over… The wolfdog, still a bit under the influence of the nightmare, walked backwards until he was with is back against the wall, still heavily shaking. “Wo, wo… take it easy I am not going to hurt you…” said Balto to comfort him.

It didn’t make much of an impression on him. “Right, you know what? Here is some food, and we will talk later.” Balto reaches out, graphed a piece of the food and push it to the fringed wolfdog. While Balto turned away
