hardly stand it, she felt as if she was going to fly away. If she'd taken all the drugs in the world, it wouldn't match the high she was on right now.

"I believe you Balto," she thought. "I was stupid

to believe Trinea, I've caused so much heartache, I

just hope you're okay."

She walked up the steps to their home.

"Jenna?" Gemeni said, "what brings you back,

did you find Drake?"

Then she noticed how happy Jenna looked.

"What's up?" Gemeni asked. "You look like

you're going to explode."

"Jenna was so happy she could barely talk, she

just laughed for a moment.

"Jenna?" Gemeni asked, concerned about her

friend.

"I believe him."

"No… Jenna," Gemeni said, "I told you not

to…"

"Look," Jenna said, digging out the diamond

and placing it on the floor.

"A heart shaped diamond," Gemeni said,

"where'd you find that?"

"Balto… she laughed again, "Balto said that he

found it three weeks ago, and that he was going to go

get it that night, he said he found it and then he met

Trinea. Then he claimed she stole my bandanna from

him, and the diamond. It sounded like a lie to me, I

mean.."

"Where would Balto get a diamond ," Gemeni

finished.

"Exactly," Jenna said, "but I went to go see if I could find it, and.. well… here it is!"

"I need to talk to Drake," Jenna said. "Is he

around?"

"No," Gemeni said, "I think he's still at the

butchers, he hasn't been home."

"Thanks," she said, "bye!"

"Jenna?" Drake asked as he saw her running up

to him.

"Drake, we need to talk.."

"Jenna, is it important? I'm kind of busy right

now."

"What?" Jenna asked.

Then she saw a gray dog on the snow behind

him.

“What’s, oh my gosh!” Jenna said as she saw the dog, or what was left of it.

“He’s so young,” she said.

“Actually,” Drake said, “it’s a she.. or was.”

“What happened?” Jenna asked.

“Well,” Drake said.

He sighed.

“It’s one of those three I was talking about

earlier today. Looks like the butcher caught one of

them, I told them this would happen. He keeps a

shotgun in the shop with him, looks like she was

pretty close.

“Jenna turned around to keep from throwing up.

“So what were you wanting to talk to me

about.”

“Drake… I… I’ve made a horrible mistake.”

She said.

“Jenna, I told you that day that you had to

make this decision once, I can’t undo it, it’s done.

“Well,” Jenna said, “what if I had some new

evidence.?”

“Like what Jenna?” Drake asked.

“Like this,” Jenna said, taking out the diamond.

“You found it,” Drake said, “where?”

Jenna smiled.

“In the shed where he said he slept.

“That means…” Drake started.

Jenna smiled and nodded.

“That means he was telling me the truth,” Jenna

said.

“Well he’s gone now, but as soon as he gets

back we’ll bring it up again, as for Trinea, we should

find her, and hold her, I’d like to talk to her for a

while.” Drake said.

“I’ll see if I can find her, I’ll try not to kill her.”

Then Jenna whirled around and ran away.

Jenna went straight home. The wind had started

to blow, and she was cold by the time she got there.

She looked out over the frozen plain and watched as a

snowflake drifted down from the ominous dark clouds.

"Oh no," Jenna thought, "it's snowing."

She watched as the sky filled with small snowflakes.

"Balto," she thought, "you'd better come back to me."

Then she walked into the house.

Balto was running on the soft bed of snow that covered the ground now.

He looked up at the clouds that blanketed the sky.

"This is going to get bad," Balto thought.

His paws were already soaked and were starting to freeze.

He looked behind him to see Tim trotting through the snow.

"It surprises me that he doesn't complain, he's a pretty mature kid, though I guess living on the streets will do that to you," Balto thought.

"Hey kid," Balto said, "come here."

Tim trotted up next to Balto.

"What?" he said.

He was actually smiling, grinning like an idiot from ear to ear.

"Do you want to head back?" Balto asked.

Tim shook his head.

"Are you kidding?" he said, "I love this!"

"It's going to get bad," Balto said, "are you sure?"

"Yeah," Tim said. "How far are we from Anchorage?"

"Probably about three hours," Balto responded.

"Well let's keep moving then," Tim said, then he ran up ahead.

Balto smiled.

"He's a brave kid, or a stupid one," he thought.

Then he followed Tim into the blowing snow.

Chapter XIII

Back in Nome a very worried Jenna was standing in front of the window, her front paws resting on the windowsill.

She was looking out the window.

The snow had intensified and everything was buried in snow.

"Balto," she said quietly as she stared out at the frozen landscape.

"Mom, what's a Balto?" Blaize asked.

Jenna felt a pang of guilt, her son didn't even know his father's name. The pups had started talking about a week ago, and with Balto gone, they'd not got to really meet him yet, then the thing with Trinea happened, and well… they didn't even know they had a dad.

"Well Blaize," Jenna said. Balto isn't a what, he’s a who, and he’s your dad.

"My dad?" Blaize asked.

Jenna smiled at him.

"I know you haven't seen him yet, he's been awful busy these past few days, but you will, soon. I think you'll like him."

"What's dad like?" Jadze asked.

Jenna smiled again.

"He's the most wonderful dog in all of Nome, in all the world," Jenna said.

She looked at her children, and dropped her paws down off of the window sill.

Come over here guys, and I'll tell you all about it," she said.

The pups followed her over to her bed, and climbed in. They were using hers, because they didn't have their own, and Jenna was content to just lay beside them.

"Now," Jenna started, "you don't really know him yet, but you're going to love him.

"I certainly do," she thought.

"He's the biggest hero in all of Alaska. About six years ago, when he was about a year old, and I was a little younger, the town of Nome was a lot smaller than it is now. It used to be kinda nice, living in a small town, but the bigger one's got it's advantages too.

Anyway, your father… your father is half wolf, and so are both of you. I'm a husky, malamute mix and your father is wolf and husky. "

She paused for a moment.

"Let me stop here and say something to you, alright?"

The two pups nodded, already transfixed with the story.

"Never, and I mean ever take that heritage for granted, or shun it. Being half wolf isn't going to be easy all the time, some dogs may make fun of you, call you names, or even try to hurt you because of it. But you must remember that they're only scared of that which they do not understand. Half of them have never even met a real wolf, and I can assure you, you will and you'll like them too. They're just dog's, like all of us. They just live away from the humans, while we choose to live near them.

"I think being a wolf is cool," Blaize said.

"Your big sister Aleu leads a wolf pack, not to far from here," Jenna said.

"Really," Blaize said, she leads it?"

"Yes she does, and your other brother and sister, Dash and Melody, live there too

"But back to my story."

I moved here from Shishmaref when I was about six months old. I had to leave my mom and dad, because my owner, Rosy, was moving here. I didn't know what to do. I had no friends and no one close, except Rosy of course.

All of the other dog's, picked on your father mercilessly, and in order to fit in… I did too, once. Then I saw the hurt in his eyes, he looked right at me. I've never seen anything so sad, anyone that looked so lost.

I felt so bad, I wanted to help him, but I was fast becoming popular in Nome, seems I met the right dogs at the right times… anyway, to be seen with him, my friends would have shunned me, and I was scared, I was scared of losing them, just to talk to him.

One day I got my bandana caught on a fence. I tried to go under it and got stuck. He jumped down and helped me. I didn't realize it was him, until later.

That month there was a race, it's all your father wanted, to be a sled dog, but the humans wouldn't give him a chance, afraid he might turn on them because he was part wolf. They couldn't have been more wrong. I was starting to see that there was so much more to him, than what I saw at first glance, that there was someone beneath the wall of roughness, that surrounded him.

During the race, my owner's new hat blew off of her head and out onto the track. Balto saw it, and ran alongside the team, trying to beat them to it, and you know he

I've just finished reading "A broken trust". Well, I can say it wasn't as good as the previous, but it was good, interesting and had an unexpected ending.
