with Jenna. Then he laid down.

He was happy for Gemeni.

“Drake has no idea what he’s gotten himself into,” Balto thought with a smile, then he drifted off to sleep.

A gray dog made it’s way down the sidewalk, stopping to look at the buildings, until it seemed to recognize it’s surroundings. Then it took off toward the outskirts of town.

Jenna was just now leaving the old mill, it was late and she hadn’t planned on staying out this late.

“But Gemeni needed me,” she thought.

She thought about the six little balls of fluff that were now a part of Drake and Gemeni’s family.

“I really wanted to talk to Balto tonight,” Jenna thought, “but I guess this was more important.”

She kept walking slowly toward home.

“Balto,” Trinea thought, “I told you, but I guess you didn’t believe me, now like or not, desperate measures must be taken, or I’ll lose you forever, and that just won’t do. I told you I’d do whatever was necessary, you decided to test me, I hope I pass.

Then Trinea crept slowly up to the darkened home.

Trinea slipped into the house easy enough, through the doggie door, and looked around her.

“Not a bad place,” she thought, then she saw her target.

The pups slept in their bed, unaware of the danger they were in.

Trinea noticed with some disappointment, that Jenna wasn’t here.

“But I’ll just have to take care of her later.” Trinea thought.

She walked over to the pup’s bed.

“Can you really do this?” She asked herself.

“You can do anything for Balto,” she answered.

Then she raised her paw high in the air, preparing to bring it crashing down on the young female’s head.

Balto woke up, and opened his eyes.

At first he thought that Jenna had come home, then he realized that the silhouette was smaller than Jenna.

He stood up..

“Who are…”

He stopped, as the light fell across her face.

“Trinea!” Balto yelled.

The pups opened their eyes then and took off, seeing the paw hovering above them.

Trinea tried to hit the female, but she missed.

“Trinea… I told you,” Balto felt a rage building in him that he’d never felt before.

“I can’t kill her in front the kids,” Balto thought.

He stared at her, as a smile slid across her face.

Jenna walked around the house, and toward the door.

Suddenly she heard yelling coming from their home.

“What’s that,” Jenna thought,

Then she heard a familiar female voice.

“Trinea?” Jenna thought, “surely after all of this, Balto didn’t…”

She decided to check this one out for herself. She snuck up to the window and began to listen.

“Balto,” Trinea yelled, “don’t you see your efforts are futile? I always get what I want, whatever it takes. Can’t you see my plan has unfolded just like it was supposed to.

“I’ll admit that it had it’s ups and downs, but the basic plan itself still stands, there’s nothing you can do to stop it. Think of how easy it would have been on everyone else, if you’d just given in that night, no one would know about it, it would be over, but no, you have to go and cause all of this. “

“You want to know the truth Balto? I knew you probably wouldn’t take my offer that night, it would have been disappointing to me if you had, and I really would’ve left, but by refusing me, you proved to me what a great dog you really are, and that gave me even more reason to fight for you.

Yes I knew that you loved your little family too much to risk jeopardizing your relationship with them. But I had to ask, because you can never assume.”

Balto had had enough of this.

“Trinea, this is your one chance, go away.”

“Ha, and why would I give up all of my work? All of my sacrifice?”

Balto heard a window breaking then, and Jenna flew through it, landing on Trinea and sliding into the wall.

Trinea stood up, a little addled.

“So it’s you,” Trinea said.

Jenna was extremely angry.

“Jenna..” Balto started, but Jenna cut him off.

“Balto this is between me and her, don’t get in the way.”

Balto took a step back.

Jenna leapt at Trinea, and hit her in the face. Trinea backpedaled and ran into a table. Jenna intended to slam her head into the table leg, but Trinea surprised her and hit her in the face. Jenna felt a little blood roll down her muzzle, and she took a step back. Trinea tried to advance, and though Jenna knew nothing of fighting, passion fueled her now, and she ducked Trinea’s next strike.

Jenna hit Trinea several times, forcing her back against the wall. Her next strike slammed Trinea’s head into the wall.

Jenna kept hitting her, knocking her head against the wall, until she lost consciousness.

Balto walked up behind Jenna and put a paw on her shoulder.

Jenna stopped hitting Trinea and she slumped to the floor.

“Jen, you’re hurt,” Balto said, licking her face.

“I’m fine,” Jenna said. “I’m gonna go get Drake.

The next morning the entire town of Nome was buzzing with news and rumors about the trial that was to take place today.

Almost every dog in Nome had tried to cram themselves into the small building that was the old mill.

In the front, Balto sat on the left side of the court room, Jenna at his side.

Drake was there, and he was staring at Balto. Then he got up and walked down to him.

“I’m sorry buddy,” Drake said. ”I had to go on the evidence…”

“It’s okay,” Balto said, “you were just doing your job.”

Drake smiled, “yeah,” he said.

“She’s here.” Jenna said.

The three turned around to see Trinea walking down to the front of the room.

“We’re going to get her,” Drake said, “don’t worry.”

Balto smiled.

“I’m not,” he said.

Drake hadn’t been gone five minutes, when he came back in the room, and announced his decision, guilty, the punishment?

Banishment.

The whole of the court room followed Trinea out to the outskirts of the town.

She looked back at Balto, standing beside him was Jenna, and their two pups.

Then she turned and ran.

Everyone cheered.

Trinea ran for all she was worth, tears blinding her.

“I had it all worked out Bow,” she thought, “Balto was perfect, just like you, I’m so sorry.”

Her thoughts drifted back to that day…

Trinea was walking down the streets in Applegate. She was due to have pups soon, probably about six months.

She was on her way to tell her mate, Bow, about it. He didn’t know yet.

She ran all the way to their home, she was so excited. As she neared their home however, she saw another female exit their house.

“What?” Trinea thought. “No, it can’t be.”

She watched as the female laughed , and left.

Bow a hadn’t seen her,, and she stayed out of the way.

Tears filled her eyes.

“What am I going to do….” She thought.

She remembered what she’d done, how she’d found out that indeed, her beloved Bow was running around on her.

She’d decided to confront him about it, one night when they were alone, away from the town.

He’d smacked her good.

“He’d never hit me before,” she thought.

She got so mad…. She ….

Then she remembered the cliff, and pushing him back.. and… and seeing him plunge over three hundred feet to the ground far below.

“I felt so bad. I loved him. What was wrong? I must have done something wrong. He would’ve made such a good dad,” she told herself.

She’d decided then, that she had to find a dog that would be as good a dad to her pups as Bow would’ve been, it was her responsibility to them. She’d come to Nome, and then she’d found Balto.

“I failed,” She thought, as she ran, “I can’t have them be born without a dad.”

She wasn’t paying attention to where she was going, too much on her mind, she didn’t see the hill…

She fell down it, rolling along the snow, until she reached the bottom. Then she slid off of the edge of the cliff at the bottom.

Trinea grabbed on to some loose rocks, and held on for dear life.

“I don’t want to die,” she thought, as she looked at the dizzying drop below her.

Then she lost her grip.

If a dog plunges to it’s death when no one is around, does it still make a noise when it hits the ground….

EPILOGUE

Star ran up to Balto, the little dog had become good friends with Tim since Tim had moved into the boat,

“Balto, come quick, it’s happened!”

“Tycha?” Balto asked.

Star nodded, and took off toward the boat.

“Jenna I’ll be back in a little bit, it’s Tycha!” he yelled through the door.

“Okay Balto,” Jenna said, “I’ll be there as soon as I can get the kids.”

Balto took off down the road.

Tim was standing out on the boat, his head hung low.

Balto ran up the ramp.

“Hey kid, I heard the news.”

Tim sighed.

“What’s the matter?” Balto asked, “is Tycha okay?”

Tim nodded,

“Well?” Balto asked.

“There were five of them…” Tim said.

“Five,” Balto said, “that’s pretty good.”

“…now there’s one.”

“Oh Tim,” Balto said, “I’m sorry.”

“How’s

I've just finished reading "A broken trust". Well, I can say it wasn't as good as the previous, but it was good, interesting and had an unexpected ending.
