spattered across her beautiful face.

“It’s a little late for that, don’t you think.”

“No Lucky,” Jack said, “you can’t just leave me like this.”

She smiled again.

“Jack, she said, “I… it’s my time, we’ve had such a good life together, and now… it’s time for me to leave.”

“But,” Jack said, “I … I don’t want you to leave.”

“I’ll see you ag.. again some day,” she said, “I know I will, un… until then, you’ll have to trust me, yo… your day will come too. Ju… Just wait for it….

Jack I… I….”

Lucky fell silent, and her head dropped to the snow.

Jack stared in disbelief at his best friend in the world. He couldn’t believe what had just happened.

He looked up into the snow filled sky.

“I’ll wait Lucky,” he said, “I hope that you’re right…..”

“That’s horrible,” the female said, “did you kill Hiat?”

“I would have,, probably, but… well the sled kind of uh… landed on him.”

“ooh, ouch,” the female said.

“Yeah,” Jack replied.

“So she really told you all of that, before….”

“Yes,” Jack said, “ever since then, I’ve been waiting… waiting for the day, when I’d see her again.

“Well I think that day is here,” the female said.

“What?” Jack said.

Then Trinea leapt at him.

Balto was woken up by a scream.

He was awake immediately. He stood up, and heard it again.

“Tycha?” he thought as he ran toward the source of the sound.

He found Tycha standing on the hill, looking at something at the bottom.

“What’s wrong Tych,” Tim said, as he walked up behind Balto.

“He’s… He’s…” Tycha couldn’t even finish her sentence.

“Oh no,” Balto said, “Trinea.”

Then he ran down the hill.

Jack lay in the snow, exactly as he had fallen.

There were wounds on his neck and shoulder. Though it looked to be the one on his neck, that had done him in.

Balto was saddened by the loss of this friend, but he also couldn’t help but think, “What am I gonna do now.”

Balto found it odd, that Jack was smiling, until he thought about it for a minute.

“I guess you and Lucky are together now,” Balto thought.

“What is wrong with you,” Balto said. “Why…. Why me, why can’t you just leave me alone.

Trinea slipped out of the tree line at the bottom of the hill.

“Hello Balto,” she said.

Balto turned around.

“You,” he said, “Why can’t you just leave me alone, get out of my life, you’ve messed it up enough already.”

“But Balto,” she said, “I’m trying to help you, you just don’t realize it. Come on, come with me, please?”

Balto took a step back, “I don’t need your help,” he said, “just go away.”

“You know,” she said with a smile, “your dear Jenna hates you, she hasn’t even told your own kids your name.”

“And all this is because of you,” Balto said, “what makes you think I would like you now?”

You’ll come around,” Trinea said, “it may take some…. measures, but you will.”

“No Trinea,” Balto said, “I won’t.”

She said nothing, just kept smiling and walking around him.

“You killed him, didn’t you?” Balto said.

Trinea nodded,

“My plan didn’t have him in it.”

“Trinea, you’re sick,” Balto said, “you need help but not help that I can give, just stay away from me.”

He turned and began to walk away.

She smiled again.

“If this is your decision, if this is the way you’re going to be…” she said, “maybe I’ll have to take care of some other’s, that weren’t in my plan.

Balto turned back around quickly, trying to think of what she meant.

“The three of them wouldn’t be too hard.” She said.

Balto thought about this remark, then it came to him.

“Don’t you dare even think about touching them,” he said, “you do anything to them, so much as step in my… her house, and I’ll hunt you down Trinea, I’ll hunt you down and kill you.”

She just laughed.

“Balto, I know on a sub-conscious level, you like me, I know it, because it’s nature, and no one can resist nature. Just give up, no one else needs to get hurt.” She said.

“No one else will,” Balto said, “or you will.”

She smiled at him again.

“We’ll see Balto… we’ll see…”

Then as quickly as she appeared, she disappeared, fading back into the woods.

Balto could hear her laughter echoing in the forest.

“I’ve got to get home now!” Balto thought as he took off toward the hill.

CHAPTER XX

Balto was approaching Nome.

He hadn’t stopped much, and the rest of the group, was pretty tired.

“I hope she didn’t beat me here,” he thought, “though how I’m going to help Jenna when she doesn’t listen to me anymore, I don’t know.”

Of all the dogs to be there, Jenna was coming out of the old mill, as he ran up.

“Great,” he thought, “might as well start now.”

She saw him.

Her face lit up and she ran at him.

“What?” Balto thought, she was… smiling.

She slammed into him, and the two of them rolled onto the sidewalk.

“Jenna?” Balto said.

She just laughed and buried her face in his chest.

“Uh… Jenna?” Balto said, thoroughly confused.

She climbed up off him, and he stood up, slowly.

“Jenna,” Balto asked. “What’s up?”

“I… I believe you.” She said.

Balto was still confused, until he saw her bandanna, wedged into the knot, was a familiar heart shaped diamond.

“You found it?” Balto said.

She nodded.

“Oh, Balto,” she said, “I was so stupid, please, please say you’ll forgive me.”

Balto smiled.

“Of course I will Jenna.”

Jenna smiled back.

“Balto, call me Jen.”

“Alright Jen,” Balto said, smiling.

“So I take it that this is Jenna… pretty good Balto.”

Jenna turned around to see a black and white dog standing there.

“Balto… who’s she?” Jenna asked, a terrible feeling coming over her.

“I’m Jamie,” the dog said, taking a step forward. “Balto and I were best friends when he lived in Applegate.”

“Applegate?” Jenna asked, as she turned to Balto.

“I’ll tell you later Jen,” Balto said, “for now, you and the pups are in danger. Trinea threatened to hurt you guys to get to me,” he said.

“Let her try,” Jenna said.

“Jenna,” Balto responded, “she’s already killed one, a dog named Jack.”

“You found him?” Jenna asked.

Balto nodded.

“Jen, Trinea killed him.”

“My goodness,” Jenna said.

Balto nodded again.

I want you to take the pups and stay at the boat with Tim and Tycha, you’ll be safe out there.”

“Who are Tim and Tycha?” Jenna asked.

“Hello,” Tim said, as he stepped up to her. “My name is Tim. Do you know that you are the prettiest dog in all of Nome?”

Jenna didn’t know quite how to respond to his remark.

Tim suddenly took a blow to the back of the head, it threw him to the ground.

He was a little surprised by this, and looked up, half expecting Trinea to be standing there or something, instead it was Tycha. She was glaring at him.

“Oh sorry,” he said.

He stood up and looked back at Jenna.

“You used to be,” he said.

Balto and Jenna laughed.

“Jenna,” Balto said, “I want you to take the pups and stay out there for a while, like two weeks, okay?”

Jenna nodded.

“I’ll get them and go now.”

“Okay,” Balto said, “it’s good to have you back Jen.”

“You too,” Jenna said.

Then the two of them walked off.

Jamie went to explore her new home, and Tim led Tycha to the boat.

It had been three weeks since Balto had last seen Trinea. He figured it was safe for his family to move back with him.

“It feels so good to be home,” Balto thought.

“Hey dad,” Blaize asked, “can you tell us one more story?”

Balto smiled,

“Kids it is already past your bedtime, come on now, it’s time to go to sleep.”

The kids got down off of the chair they’d been laying on, and went over to their bed, they had their own now.

Balto walked to the window, hoping to see Jenna standing out there.

“Guess she’s still with Gemeni,” Balto thought.

He had been hoping that she’d get back before he went to sleep, so he could talk to her.

She and the pups had just moved back in two days ago, and they’d not had much time to talk.

Balto was actually kind of afraid, the whole time that Jenna had been gone, Rosie hadn’t even seemed to notice.

“Something’s changing there,” Balto thought.

He finally gave up on Jenna just walking up and walked away from the window, walking over to the bed he shared with Jenna. Then he

I've just finished reading "A broken trust". Well, I can say it wasn't as good as the previous, but it was good, interesting and had an unexpected ending.
