yeah, they were sick… but I also did it because she was involved, because… because I felt I had to prove my self to her.

He looked up at Trinea.

"I love her, more than life itself. I don't know what I'd do without her."

"Oh for the love of God," Trinea said, "stop it. all of this lovey dovey bull is giving me a headache. Balto you're sick, your devotion to her.. it's unhealthy."

She stepped up close to him again.

"Come on," she said, let me help you."

Balto backed up, and shook his head.

Then he walked right by her, didn't say one more word, just walked out the back door.

She was incensed.

"You just wait Balto," She yelled, "this isn't over!"

He didn't respond, just let the door swing shut behind him.

"Just you wait," She thought, "you'll be back, as soon as I end this pathetic puppy love of a relationship you have, you'll be back. No one has ever walked out on me, not on Trinea, and I don't plan to start letting them now….

Chapter II

"Hey there."

Balto turned around to see a brown dog running up to him.

He stopped.

"I just wanted to tell you that you did the right thing back there," the dog said.

"You heard that?" Balto asked.

"I was sleeping in the loft."

"Oh, well I just love my mate, it shouldn't be that big a deal."

"Yeah," the dog said, "but in this day and age…"

"True," Balto said, "I know too many broken families."

"Well, I know what you were talking about in there," the dog said, "I felt the same way about my Lucy."

The old dog noticed the questioning look in Balto's eye.

"She died… last year."

"Oh," Balto said, "I'm sorry."

"Yeah," he said. "We were both part of a sled team. We ran medical supplies between Aramoa and Houlandrou. They're two cities up by Fairbanks."

"You're quite a ways from home," Balto said.

"Yeah," the old dog said, "we are now. I think that the master is seeing some family down here or something."

"You were saying?" Balto asked.

"Oh, well," the old dog continued, "I.. uh, there was a wreck. The ah.. the runners jumped across her back."

Balto winced.

"Wow, sorry."

"At least she went out doing something she loved, not growing old like me."

"Well it was nice talking to ya," Balto said. "What's your name?"

"Oh, I'm Jake, I know you're Balto."

"Yeah," Balto said, "well it was nice meeting you Jake."

Same here," Jake said, "take care of her youngin', you'll never regret it, even if you don't have as much fun as you would otherwise."

"I will," Balto said

Then the old dog walked away.

Balto decided that he would surprise Jenna tomorrow with the diamond. So he stayed in an abandoned port building for the night. the bandanna that Jenna wore was kind of small for him, so he took it off whenever he layed down, it tended to cut off the circulation in his neck. He layed it to7 the side, the diamond wrapped carefully inside it and soon he fell asleep.

Trinea followed Balto for a while, trying to figure out where he lived. He stopped at an old building that looked like it was about to fall down. She watched through the window as he layed down and waited till he was sleeping, then she crept in through the window, careful not to wake him up. She snuck around the loft and quietly crawled down the ramp. She saw her target almost immediately.

"He made it so easy for me," she thought.

She walked over and grabbed the bandanna with her teeth, not noticing the small stone that fell from it.

She started to leave and then looked back at Balto.

"I'm setting you free," she said aloud, "you may not realize it yet, and you'll probably hate me for what I'm about to do... but in time, you will understand, maybe then you will come back to me, maybe then we can be together, my love."

Then she crept out of the building.

Balto woke up the next morning and… the bandanna was gone!

"Oh no!" Balto thought, "Jenna's had that forever, what she going to do when she finds out I lost it!"

He looked everywhere, but couldn’t find it. He tore the place apart, but still no bandanna.

Then he remembered what was in it.

"Oh no," he thought again, "the diamond."

He couldn't find it anywhere either.

"Great," he thought, "now what am I going to do?"

He walked out of the building and set to looking for it out there, but no luck.

"What a way to start the day!" He thought, "I wonder who would've taken it?"

He didn't want to be late, so he headed home.

Jenna was walking around town, she was disappointed that Balto had missed this morning.

"But I'm sure he has a good reason," she thought, "I just wonder what it is?"

She heard a commotion in the square ahead of her. She wondered what it could be, so early in the morning. She saw Dixie walking toward her, a shocked look on her face.

"Oh… ah… Jenna," Dixie said, "umm.. maybe you shouldn't go to the square right now."

"Why?" Jenna asked

"Well.. ah…"

\She took a deep breath and sighed.

"No," she said, there's no sense in hiding it, it something that's not going to just go away…. I'd've never guessed it'd be Balto though."

"What," Jenna asked alarmed, "is he hurt?"

"No," Dixie said, "but he may be soon."

Jenna took off running for the square then.

"He must be about to get into a fight!" She thought.

Nothing could've prepared her for what she saw when she entered the square.

There was a young gray dog, a female, she was surrounded by a lot of the other dogs from Nome. They all looked shocked.

The dog was wearing a very familiar looking red bandanna.

"What the… how'd she get that?"

Jenna walked over to the female, she was crying.

"Where did you get that?" Jenna asked.

"Oh," the female said through her tears, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it, he didn't tell me he had a…. and he was so cute… and… oh I'm so sorry."

"What?" Jenna asked.

"You're Jenna right?" the dog said, still crying.

"Yeah," she said.

"Well Balto gave me this, after we…."

"No," Jenna said, understanding what the female was getting at.

"Not Balto. He'd never do that," she said.

But even as she said it, she doubted herself.

"Would he?"

Dingo walked up to her then.

"Mom…"

She looked at him, he looked extremely angry. She'd never seen him look that way before.

"He's always' so calm and mild mannered"

"Mom I need to talk to you now!"

She started to walk away from the square.

"Here," Trinea said, "she stepped down off of the steps.

"I think this is yours."

She slipped the bandanna off of her neck and dropped it in front of Jenna."

Jenna just stared at it.

"Please accept my most heartfelt apologies, I swear I wouldn't have done it if I'd known…."

Jenna didn't say anything. She just picked up the bandanna, slid it on her shoulders and walked away.

"Please tell me all that was a lie," Jenna said, that you saw her steal this or something."

Tears started to come to Jenna's eyes as she realized why her son was probably so mad.

“I wish I could,” Dingo said, “but Mom, Dad was with her last night, I saw them.”

Jenna really started to cry then.

She laid her head on Dingo’s shoulder and cried.

“Don’t worry Mom,” Dingo said, “I’m getting to the bottom of this, we’ll know the truth soon.”

CHAPTER III

Balto decided to go back and see if she was there.

As he walked up the porch steps, on the front of the house, he saw Jenna. The kids were playing, but as Balto approached, his son Dingo, herded them inside. . "hmm.." Balto thought, "I wonder what that's about.

Then as he got closer, he could see that Jenna was extremely upset. She could barely stand, she was crying so hard.

"Something's horribly wrong," he thought.

He ran up the steps.

"Jenna what's…"

She hit him, hard, right on the side of the head.

Balto stepped back, extremely confused.

"Jenna's never hit me before," he thought.

The side of his face stung.

He was so shocked that he couldn't even speak, he just stared at her.

Jenna finally stopped crying enough to speak.

"You've got a lot of nerve showing up here," she said.

"Jen…" Balto said.

"My name is Jenna," she snapped.

"Jenna what's wrong?" Balto asked.

"Balto," she yelled, dissolving into tears again. "How could you? I thought you loved me, and on our anniversary?"

Balto was even more confused now.

"Jen," Balto said.

"I told you stop calling me that," Jenna yelled at him.

"But Jenna, I always…"

Jenna cut him off again.

"Oh come on Balto, you don't have to play stupid, I met Trinea. How do you think I got this back?

Balto noticed she was wearing her bandanna..

Suddenly he realized what must have happened.

"What did she tell you?" Balto asked.

"What?"
Jenna yelled. "Are you going to try to tell me you didn't…didn't…"

She couldn't even say it.

I've just finished reading "A broken trust". Well, I can say it wasn't as good as the previous, but it was good, interesting and had an unexpected ending.
