This is something I don’t usually do, but this one I feel must have a dedication.

To my Dad, Eddy Rotramel

It was all the talks about accountability that we had that gave me this idea, although everything may turn out okay in stories, the same thing could happen to all of us, without as favorable an ending, so be careful and thanx!

Chapter I

“Hey Kaltag,” Balto said running up to the brown dog.

“Yeah Balto,” Kaltag said, slowing down to let Balto catch up . “What’s up buddy?”

“Well,” Balto said, “I need you to lie to Jenna for me.”

“Lie to Jenna?” Kaltag asked, a worried tone creeping into his voice.

“Yeah,” Balto said, make it up, but make it good. I need her to think that I’m not here yet, that I won’t be here ‘till tomorrow.

“Gee, I don’t know, Balto,” Kaltag said, “lie to Jenna, that’s not real good.”

“Come on buddy,” Balto said. “It’s for a good cause.”

“What is that?” Kaltag asked.

“I found something last week that I hid for tomorrow and I want to go get it , without Jenna knowing,” Balto said. “Tomorrow is me and Jenna’s seventh anniversary, “

“What is it?” Kaltag asked.

Balto beamed.

“A diamond,” he said.

“Wow,” Kaltag said, “Dixie will be jealous.”

Balto smiled.

“I know,” he said.

“Okay,” Kaltag said, “I’ll tell her.”

“Thanks Kaltag,” Balto said, “I owe you.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Kaltag said, as he walked away.

"So, any way that's what he told me to tell you." Kaltag finished.

"You say that he's going to be tomorrow morning getting back?" Jenna asked.

"Yeah," Kaltag said, "something about meeting an old friend in Applegate."

"That's kind of strange," Jenna said, "I'd've thought that he'd want to be here tomorrow morning.

But thanks Kaltag."

"Goodnight Jenna," Kaltag said.

"Bye Kaltag," Jenna replied.

"Kaltag turned around and left.

Balto was walking through the streets of Nome, looking for a particular trash dumpster.

"I hope it's still there." Balto said to himself.

As he was walking, Balto remembered that Flash and Max wouldn't be there when he got home. They were going to Applegate, alone. Just to be together for a while.

"I'm glad to see that they're getting along so well now." Balto thought. "Maybe Jenna and I should do that, sometime when the pups get older. We haven't been alone in a long time, what with my sledding, and kids, it's been a long time."

Then Balto saw the dumpster, and walked over to it. He dug the dirt away from the bottom of it, revealing a small hole. He stuck his paw in the hole and scooped out a dirty little rock. He blew the dust off of it and the heart shaped diamond glittered in the moonlight.

"I'm glad it's still here," Balto thought.

He picked the diamond up with his mouth and stuck it in between him and the red bandanna he was wearing.

Jenna gave him her bandanna every time he went out on a trip.

"I guess to remind me of her," Balto thought. "I don't need it, but it's okay, I suppose."

The bandanna was sized for Jenna, so it fit Balto rather tightly.

"This time, that's okay though," he thought, "the pressure will hold the diamond."

He started to walk away.

"Balto?"

He heard a voice behind him, and turned around

There was a small gray female standing there.

"She's kinda cute," Balto thought, "if I wasn't with Jenna…"

His mind wandered a bit.

"but you are with Jenna," he told himself, "so quit thinking about it."

"Hello," he said, who are you?"

"My name's Trinea," she said.

"I don't think I've ever seen you before Trinea," Balto said, "are you new?"

"Oh, I don't live here," Trinea said, "I live in Applegate.

"Applegate, really," Balto asked, "What brings you to Nome?"

"You," she said.

"Me?" Balto said.

"Yes," she responded.

"What do you want with me?" Balto asked.

"Well it's kind of private so could we step into this barn over here?"

"Sure, why not?" Balto said.

Trinea giggled "I've always wanted to meet you," she said.

"I don't know why you guys make such a big deal out of that," Balto said, "I only did what anyone else would've done in my place."

She laughed again and started walking toward the barn.

"You don't give yourself enough credit," she said, "what you did was extremely brave, and daring. Weren't you afraid?"

"Anybody would've been," he said, "yeah, I was afraid, but I didn't let it get me down, I just kept going."

They reached the barn and he pushed the door open.

She giggled again and sighed.

"Such a gentlemen." she said, as she walked through the door.

Balto made sure she wouldn't see him, and then he rolled his eyes.

"This female is starting to get on my nerves a little," he thought. "She's hiding something, I can feel it, but what?"

Then he followed her through the door, it shut behind them.

Across the street, Dingo was out for a midnight stroll. He'd heard his father's voice, and came over to see him. Then he saw him laughing with that young girl. He wasn't worried, didn't even really think much of it.

"Probably just one of dad's friends," he thought, "I may have a talk with him about appearances tomorrow though, that's how rumors get started.."

Dingo walked away, it was late and his owner would be looking for him soon.

"So what was it that you wanted to talk to me about?" Balto asked.

"Well…" Trinea started.

"I have a favor to ask of you."

"And what's that?" Balto said.

"Well I want you to spend tonight in this barn." Trinea said

Balto laughed

"Trinea," he said, "that doesn't make a whole lotta sense, why would you want me to stay in the barn?"

Then he thought about it.

"Uh-Oh," he thought.

Trinea took a step forward.

"Cause this is where I'm staying tonight," she said.

She looked up at him and batted her eyes.

"Ah, sorry Trinea," Balto said, trying to think of a way to say it without embarrassing her too much.

"but I've already got a mate."

"She'll never know Balto," Trinea said, "one night, and then I'm out of here. I'll never come back to Nome again, I live in Applegate remember?"

"Trinea," Balto said, "ah…well.. I can't do that to her, I love her."

"Oh what is love anyway?" Trinea said, "it's just a word a meaningless word that means you're tied down " she stepped up closer to him still, brushing his nose with the tip of her tail.

Balto backed up.

"No love is a wondrous feeling, it means that I care for her enough to give my life for hers," he said.

Trinea closed the distance between them again.

"Come on Balto, give in, just once won't hurt, will it?"

"Yes," Balto said, "do you know what Jenna would do to me if she found out somehow? I'd never, ever be able to win back her trust."

"Is she really worth it?" Trinea asked. "it doesn't sound like you get to have much fun."

"I enjoy my relationship with her," Balto said, anger creeping into his voice. "That's enough."

"Oh,! you poor boy," Trinea said.

She giggled.

"She's the first for you huh?"

"Well…"

Balto stuttered a little, trying to find the words.

"It doesn't matter," he said finally.

She giggled again.

"Yes it does," she said. "you've never known anyone else."

"I don't want to," Balto said. "Jenna is my entire life, she's what keeps me going when I want to give up. It's not that I'm doing what needs to be done, or… anything like that, it's not the team… it's her. She's why I went to find that team. I say it was doing what needed to be done… but…I..

His voice trailed off a little

It was her all along. I helped those children, because, yeah, they were

I've just finished reading "A broken trust". Well, I can say it wasn't as good as the previous, but it was good, interesting and had an unexpected ending.
