The Change of Heart

(Part Two)

Chapter 21

Farris was still sleeping when everyone started to get up. He had been staying up for most of the night, wondering where Aleu would have been. He figured that she would have just been on one of her walks again. But Steven didn’t go with her. Neither did Balto. He was heavily concerned. He had the slightest thought that there was something that Aleu was keeping from him; though he couldn’t blame her. He knew that he had told Aleu that he was going to wait for her to tell him what was on her mind that day they arrived at Nome. It was still killing him to know. But he wasn’t going to bother her about it. Although he was seriously worried about her, he was a wolf of his word. That night he had promised himself not to be too rough on her about it. But he honestly didn’t know how he was going to handle it.

Sarah woke up Nuk when everyone else started to leave to catch some breakfast. He was almost wide awake wile Farris was still sleeping, and Nuk was a heavy sleeper.

Sarah: (Poking Nuk’s neck with her muzzle) Wake up big guy.

            Nuk woke up snorting.

Nuk: Huh? What? What is it?

Sarah: Everyone’s getting up to get breakfast. You’re a little late, as usual.

Nuk made a bug yawn and stood up.

Sarah: You must have slept well. You never get up that fast.

Nuk: I went to bed early last night.

When Sarah started to walk away, Nuk noticed that Farris was still sound, asleep.

Nuk: What’s with him?

Sarah: I don’t know. He’s usually the first one up.

Nuk: I know.

Sarah was on the ground with Balto, and the rest of the clan.

Sarah: Can you wake him up, please?

Nuk: Alright, hold on.

Nuk slowly walked up to Farris and started to poke him on the head with his paw.

Nuk: Farris. Wake up, everyone is leaving, and you’re asleep.

Farris woke with a startle as Nuk was poking him. Nuk jumped a bit.

Farris: Huh. What is it?

Nuk: Geez. Warn me next time you jump like that.

Farris: Where is everyone?

Nuk: They’re down there. (Pointing his head to the clan on the ground) We’re waiting for you.

Farris stood up to see everyone off the boat.

Nuk: You must have been very tired last night.

Farris: Yeah. I was up all night last night.

Nuk: Worrying about Aleu, I’m guessing.

Farris: Yeah. Where is she anyway? Is she back yet?

Farris didn’t see her with everyone else. He really didn’t want to think that she was still out there.

Nuk: No, she hasn’t.

Farris: What? You mean she spent the night in the woods?

            Nuk shrugged.

Nuk: I guess so.

Farris: You’ve got to be kidding me.

Nuk: Well, who knows? Maybe we’ll find her when we’re out.

Farris: I hope so.

Farris jumped down off the boat with the rest of the clan, with Nuk behind him and walked up to Sarah.

Sarah: It’s nice for you to join us sleepy head.

Farris: Very funny. Can we just go?

Sarah: Alright, calm down. Did someone wake up on his weak side?

Farris: Sorry, Sarah. It’s just-

Sarah: I know. It’s ok. Trust me we’ll find her.

Farris: Ok.

Everyone turned to Balto in the front.

Balto: Alright, everyone. Let’s mush!

Everyone paused and looked at him, with one eye prow raised.

Balto: Uh, I mean, move out! Geez, I got to get that right.

Chapter 22

Niju lied next to Aleu at breakfast. Although he tried to spend time with her, he didn’t talk much. He kept thinking that he had to say something. He thought to himself come on Niju, say something to her. She may be leaving in a few minutes.

So Niju tried to push something out of his mouth and hoped it make sense.

Niju: So did you sleep well.

Thank God Niju thought. He had succeeded at bringing something up.

Aleu: Good. How bout you?

Niju: Oh, good. I’m sure you slept well enough to get up when you did.

Aleu: Yeah. I guess so.

Aleu didn’t sound so convincing. Niju was concerned. Was she mad at him for some reason? If so, what could it be? He didn’t feel too nervous to ask her what the matter was.

Niju: Aleu?

Aleu: Yeah?

Aleu continued to look in her direction.

Niju: Are you alright?

Aleu turned her head a little bit towards Niju.

Aleu: Yeah, I’m fine.

            She still didn’t sound convincing.

Niju: Are you sure?

Aleu looked back at him and gave a deep sigh. She really didn’t want to say this to him, but she didn’t want him to think the wrong thing.

Niju: You can tell me. It’s ok.

Aleu: Yeah. I mean, listen, Niju…about last night.

Niju tried to be as patient as possible, though he was desperate to know what was wrong.

Aleu: I didn’t mean to get all touchy feely with you…

Niju had a feeling about where she was heading with this. He had a thought that she wasn’t too pleased with last night when they cuddled.  He felt embarrassed.

Aleu: I didn’t know if you were asleep or not when it happened, but…I just…

Niju looked back at her, changing his view on what she said. What was she trying to say? Was she trying to apologize to him? Was she really sorry?
