“A…a…CHOO!!!” Kiwi sneezed and lifted her head. She looked down there, in the grass, sat a butterfly on a daisy.
Kiwi, still dreaming, went to get a drink. As she groggily lapped up muddy water, she heard a twig snap. The wolf cautiously lifted her head and looked around. Seeing nothing she went back to lapping. Suddenly she felt a strong shove. Kiwi plunged into the cold unforgiving depths. As the desperate wolf tried to surface, she felt something slimy and equally cold wrap around her hind leg. She managed to break away and resurfaced, gasping for air. As she did, she heard a scolding voice and a bitter whine.
“Maya! What did I tell you about pranking poor Kiwi this early?” The alpha, Boa, said.
“But that’s when she least expects it!” Maya, the beta, whined. Boa crossed her paws and raised an eyebrow.
This is the way the day usually begins. Kiwi is the gamma. She and Maya share a friendly… rivalry. This isn’t all of the pack; the rest were on a vacation of sorts.
As Kiwi climbed out of the water and shook herself dry, she saw the cold slimy thing was just seaweed. Then she saw movement in the corner of her eye. She spun around and growled. This caught Boa’s attention.
“What is it?” Boa asked.
Maya scoffed, “Another butterfly?”
“No,” Kiwi said, “I think I saw a tail…” Her voice trailed off. “I guess I’ll go check it out,” she shrugged. Kiwi trotted over to the tall grass. She sniffed it and in a flash there was a tan wolf with a stripe straight down his back.
Suddenly, Kiwi had a flash back. She had just “met” Boa. Boa had leapt on top of her in surprise. Back then, of course, she had stayed down, avoiding a fight. Now, however, she knew she could fight.
Kiwi kicked the other wolf off of her. It lunged at her, and she dodged it. She tried to tackle him from behind, but she missed and he bit her. She twisted away and bit him on the shoulder, but he kicked her in the snout. She was in over her head, so she did the only thing she could; she barked. Very, very loudly. Kiwi was notorious for her loud and sometimes obnoxious barking. The other wolf cringed. Seeing her chance, she caught him by the neck, but he twisted and caught her ear. Kiwi knew she had to let go, or she might lose her ear. Although, she was even more notorious for not giving up, she had to let go. Her hearing was at stake! As soon as she let go, she stumbled back (she’s a klutz), giving the other wolf a chance to really hurt her. And he took the chance. He lunged at Kiwi’s throat.
“Everything…” Kiwi said in a hoarse whisper “…..going….black….” Then she went limp.
