alert any passing planes or boats. But soon after they finished building the fire, they heard something in the forest. All heads on the beach turned to look. The trees in the forest began to sway, at first gently, then violently. A loud roar pulsated through the forest, and onto the beach. The survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 had never heard such a sound before in their lives.
Chapter 3
The people crowded around together on the beach. The noise kept on going and the trees kept swaying. It seemed as though there was a dinosaur moving through the jungle, a huge one. Whatever it was that was moving in there was much larger than any dinosaur could possibly be.
“What is that?” cried someone.
Then suddenly, the noise stopped. When everyone went to sleep that night, they barely could. Everyone was so scared about the mysterious noise, it was almost impossible for them to fall asleep.
The next morning, Jack, the doctor, announced that him and a girl named Kate Austen were going to go into the forest to look for the cockpit of the plane. A guy named Charlie Pace volunteered to go with them, and Balto and Jenna did too. It took a while to convince Jack to let them go, but they eventually did.
“So why exactly are we doing this?” asked Jenna.
“To find this thing called a transceiver,” said Jack “If a plane crashes, the plane automatically sends out a distress call. But it gives a wide area where the plane might be. But with the transceiver, we can send out another distress call, one that would give the rescue team a more specific of where we might be.”
While they were walking through the woods, Kate kept looking back at Charlie. Finally, he asked why. She said “You look familiar.”
Charlie said “I'll give you a hint.” He started singing “You all, everybody! You all, everybody!”
“So that's where I've seen you!”
“Huh?” said Jenna.
“I'm the bass player for Driveshaft!” said Charlie.
“Ah,” said Balto “You know you're the one who inspired me to learn to play the bass?”
“You play bass?” asked Charlie.
“And drums, piano, harmonica, and saxophone!”
“What's going on?” asked Jack.
“Does Charlie look a bit familiar?” asked Kate.
Charlie started singing the song again. Jack watched with a puzzled look on his face. Charlie's singing drifted off. Jack turned and kept walking.
“You all, everybody!” sang Charlie, Kate, Jenna, and Balto.
“Weirdos.” thought Jack.
Finally, they found the front of the plane. They climbed inside, Jack and Kate toward the cockpit, and Jenna and Balto just looked around. They didn't see where Charlie went. They opened the door to the cockpit, and the co-pilot came tumbling out.
“Dead dude comin' through!” Balto shouted down to Jenna.
Jack and Kate entered the cockpit, and found the pilot, alive. He began telling them about how the systems had gone dead and they rerouted to Fiji. He finished by saying “By time we crashed, we were a thousand miles off course.”
“The rescue team will never find us.”
Meanwhile, Balto was looking around to see if he could find something interesting. When he looked down one isle, he saw a laptop in the window seat. He leaned over to grab it when a passenger slumped down on top of him.
“Move it, Stinky!” Balto said, and pushed the dead guy off of him. He grabbed the laptop and opened the lid. “Alright! Battery is at 100%! That's...” suddenly there was roar, the same type they had heard the previous night. The entire (part of the) plane jerked, and tumbled over onto it's side.
Jack burst out of the cockpit and shouted “Run!” Everyone complied. Quickly. Jack, Kate, Charlie, Balto, and Jenna all ran out. A tree behind them was ripped out of the ground. All five of them pointed an utterly different direction and all said in unison “This way!”
Back at the beach, the others were getting nervous. They had heard the roar, faintly, off in the distance. And the team that went to fetch the transceiver wasn't back yet. Adolf jumped up and said “Thot does it! I'm tired of vaiting for those sissy Americans! I'm going to go out and find them!”
He marched off into the woods.
Jenna was panicking. She was hiding under some brush from... from what, exactly? She hadn't even caught a glimpse of that thing. And where was everyone else? Something moved toward her shoulder. Then she was yanked up off the ground and hurled into the air. She flew up twenty-five feet and landed with a hard thud on a rock.
Balto was running with all the speed his legs would carry him. He stopped. He heard nothing. That was good, very good. 'That thing isn't after me anymore, I guess!' Then he heard a cry of pain. “Jenna?” He ran toward the direction of the shout....
Adolf was getting fed up with these lousy Americans! Send them to do a simple job like finding the front of a plane, and they weren't back yet! Never send an American to do a Germans job! Then he too heard Jenna's cry of pain. He instantly began running toward the sound.
Jenna lay down, unmoving. Her back had hit a rock after a twenty-five foot drop, and she didn't feel like moving. It hurt to even blink. The only good thing that had happened was the monster was apparently gone. She heard footsteps approaching.
“Jenna? Jenna, are you okay?”
“Ouch... if it weren't for this pain going up and down my back, yes, I'm fine.”
“Vot is going on here?” demanded Adolf.
“That monster... whatever it was, it grabbed me and hurled me through the air. I landed on a rock.”
“If it had been a German in your position, he never would have allowed that to happen!” shouted Adolf.
“Look, shut up and get Jack!” said Balto.
“Vhy should I?”
Balto glared at him. “Remember our discussion on the plane?”
Adolf shuddered. “Oh. Oh ya. Okay. I'll go get Jack.”
Several minutes later, Adolf returned.
“I didn't find him. Sorry.”
“Dang. Okay, lead us back to the beach.”
“Okay. Ummm. Vhich vay is back to the beach?”
“What? How the bloody heck am I supposed to know? I spent the last half hour being chased by some monster that rips trees out by their roots! Youwere the one that came here from the beach!”
“I forget vhich direction I came from.”
“Arrgh!” 'Never send a German to do an American's job.' thought Balto.
“Look,” said Jenna “Let's just... ow... pick a direction and go that way. Adolf, how long did it take you to... ow... get here from the beach?”
“About ten minutes.”
“Then we... ooh... walk ten minutes in that direction, if we don't arrive at the beach, we come back and head another way. Sound good?”
So they walked (Not Jenna though. Adolf and Balto had to carry her) for ten minutes (the wrong way). Finally, after getting nowhere, they reversed direction. Finally, they found the beach. But there was nothing there.
“Huh.” said Balto “Maybe we should stroll around for awhile until we find everyone.”
So they did. But they didn't find a thing.
“Thisis der right beach, ya?”
“Yeah.” said Jenna. “I'm sure of it.”
Balto spoke up. “Guys... where's the plane?”
Chapter 4
It had been two days since the plane had disappeared. Balto, Jenna, and Adolf had returned to the area where she was hurled into the air by the monster.
“How does that sort of thing happen?” asked Jenna. “Almost fifty people and all the wreckage of the plane doesn't just vanish!”
“Do you think it's possible that ve just missed it?”
“I doubt it,” Balto said “It'd be pretty hard to miss something like that.” Then it started to rain.
Suddenly, they heard the roaring again.
“Run!” shouted Balto.
He and Adolf took off running but they soon noticed Jenna wasn't following them.
“I can't stand up!” cried Jenna.
Adolf and Balto ran back to help her up, but Balto suddenly collapsed. In the past two days, Jenna's back had gotten worse, and, even worse, Balto's scar on his head and gotten infected. Bad. Now the pain he felt was excruciating.
“Balto! Get up!” yelled Adolf. The roar came again. “The monster is getting close, and I can't carry both of you! I can't even carry Jenna alone!”
The tree right next to him was ripped up.
“Get Jenna!” cried Balto. “Leave me!”
Adolf didn't hesitate. He ran forward, grabbed Jenna, threw her over his back, and ran.
He was running through the forest as fast as his legs would carry him. He heard the roar close behind him. His legs were hurting from the weight of Jenna on his shoulder. His foot hooked in a root protruding from the ground, and he fell face forward into the mud. The roar came again, very close. Adolf slowly rolled over and saw the monster right above him. It didn't look anything like what he had expected. It was merely a large cloud of black smoke. Still, it was fear-inspiring. Adolf kept expecting it to attack him, but it didn't. It just lingered above him, almost as though it were looking directly into his soul. It was. He began seeing bits of his memory flashing through the cloud. People he knew, himself, events, even the crash two days before. Then, the cloud turned and flew away.
Balto was laying on the ground, pain shooting through his head. He clutched his forehead. He had never felt such pain before. “I need Jack” he thought. “If this goes a few more days unchecked, I'm going to die. I now I will.”
“Balto? Balto?” he heard.
“Adolf? Is that you?”
“Ya! Are you okay?”
“I'm fine. Never
