"What?"
"Calm down, he’s going to the vet!"
"Calm down? How could this happen?"
"Shadow…"
"We have to go see him!" Shadow leaped through the doggy door. She had to see her brother!
"Shadow!" Timber raced after her but she couldn’t… wouldn’t stop. The only thought she had was, Was it the dream? Mira could be alive!
"How is he?" Ron barely heard his nervous owner.
"Not good. There’s only a very slim chance he’ll make it," the vet replied. Mira you got your revenge. If only I could see Shadow again. He prepared himself to take his last breath through the cup tube around his mouth when he shook himself gently. No! Hang on for Shadow!
"Ron!" Shadow was by his side.
"I just thought of…" Ron gasped. "…you."
"Ron, what happened?" Shadow asked, her voice cracking.
"Mira’s alive," Ron whispered. "Help me fight her."
"You can’t fight right now," Shadow said.
"You fight here," Ron croaked. "And I fight up there."
"No, you’ll help me down here!" Shadow insisted.
"I will make it," Ron told himself. With that he fell asleep.
When Ronold woke up Shadow was asleep beside him. Ron smiled. I made it. Though, his paw was once again attacked that wasn’t important.
"How is he, vet?" asked his owner.
"His lungs are indeed healing. I don’t know how it happened. He was about gone. He must have found the will to live. His throat and lungs are healing more quickly than expected," The vet replied. "Much faster."
Months passed and he was out of the vet’s office. He sought out his sister.
"Shadow," he whispered. "I’m still here."
"You faced the odds pitted against you," Shadow murmured. "I’m proud."
"Thanks," Ron sighed. "I made it." His back leg with the scar began to twitch. Ron gasped as icy coldness gripped his leg and began to travel up his body. Ron cried out in shock, as his body fell to the ground, and, stranger yet, realization.
"Ron!" he heard Shadow scream. "Timber! Uncle Balto! Anyone help!"
Images flashed through his mind. Not of his life but of the scars. He saw Mira pointing out his brown scar, he saw he saw her gray scar. His scar was the color of her fur and hers was the color of his! The scars were why he couldn’t lie when he looked her in the eye!
"Mira," Ron gasped eyes wide.
The images stopped as the pain became almost too much. His body began to twitch and turn. Sometimes he’d be supported on one or two paws before he collapsed again.
His cries became loud gasps and soon no sound came from his mouth. Unable to make a sound, he continued to writhe and turn.
Ronold felt dogs kneel beside him and his owner as well. He heard Night and Shadow’s sobs and Storm and Aaron’s shocked voices. He again felt his body lifted onto a stretcher and, suddenly, it was over.
"What happened?" demanded Ron’s owner.
"I think…" the vet hesitated. "Rosie, will you ask them?" Jenna’s owner, a little girl named Rosie, could speak to animals.
"O-okay." Rosie bent down to Shadow. "What happened?"
"I was walking with Ron and suddenly he gasped and cried out then he began to writhe and turn!" Shadow replied, through sobs. Rosie repeated it to the vet.
"He had a secure," the vet sighed.
"How is he?" asked his owner.
"Not good but alive," the vet replied.
Rosie turned back to Shadow. "Anything else?"
"M-Mira," Shadow sobbed. She was too distressed to speak anymore.
"She said Mira," Rosie told the adults. "Maybe it’s a name."
Though Ron heard the conversation, he couldn’t reply. He couldn’t speak. If he lived, he hoped that he could speak. Shadow had to know what he figured out, she was next.
Ron’s family visited every day. He was allowed home, now. Ronold turned over in his doggy bed.
Why did Mira want revenge? All right, so he did kill her but what about before that?
"Ron?" Shadow asked.
"Listen," Ron interrupted. "Mira is doing these things to me because of the scar. Well, all right, it’s not the reason but it’s how. My scar is brown and hers is gray. They connect us."
"What?" Shadow gasped.
"Listen to me, Sis," Ron said, quickly. "You are next!"
"What?" Shadow gasped.
"She’s after you when I’m gone!" Ronold replied.
"Then we’ll make sure you stay," Shadow growled.
"Shadow, that’s going to become harder and harder," he whispered.
"I don’t care," snorted Shadow. "You were there for me. Here’s some payback."
"Alright," Ron replied, grinning. "Let’s go."
"Ron, what now?" Shadow asked.
"What when she comes?" Timber asked.
"We wait," he replied, ignoring Timber’s question.
"How long?" Flake yawned.
"Long as it takes!" Aaron snapped. "Right, Captain Lunatic?"
"Right, Mr. Straight Jacket," Ron grinned.
"Son, this time we stay as one," Storm growled.
"Together," Night agreed.
"She can’t separate us," Balto growled.
"Ever again," Jenna snarled.
"She better run for her life," Aleu stated.
"Or else," Dusty agreed.
"We’ll give her a beating," Kodi finished.
"Oh ya," Dingo sighed.
"She can’t mess with our family," said the twins. The twins were Aleu’s brothers, Max and Howler.
"We’ll give her payback," Saba growled. They were at the battlefield, waiting for Mira.
"Waiting are you?" snarled a voice.
"Mira!" gasped Ron.
"You shouldn’t have killed me," Mira chuckled. "I have been brought back with powers. In the written prophecies my father said that we had to fight till one of us dies so that would over rule. My mom said that we’d fall in love and the love would over rule and both prophecies have to become true. So, when one of us die, we come back with power! More than before."
"You mean more than the scars allowed?" Ron snarled.
"If you look at it like that," Mira grinned.
"I’m not falling for your act again," Ron growled.
"What act?" spat Mira. "It was real, you twit! But I wanted to have choices! Instead of being forced to love I want a choice!"
"So you would rather fight?" Ron demanded.
"To the death," Mira smirked.
"What death?" Ron began to circle her. "We can’t die until both prophecies are done!"
"Exactly, a never ending battle," Mira snapped. "I’ve got help!" Dogs from Nome swarmed into the arena, their eyes a glowing red.
"Great," muttered Ron, sarcastically. "You guys take them and I’ll take Mira." They were evenly numbered but numbers didn’t really mean a thing, seeing how Mira’s side was winning do to her new powers.
"Mira, come on! Can’t we break these prophecies?" Ron yelled. For the first time, Mira seemed to want to hear him.
"I…" she began. "I… can’t."
"You can," Ronold urged.
"I can’t!" Mira cried.
"You can," Ron told her. "Believe me."
"No!" Ron felt icy coldness clutch his back leg and it began to twitch. Ron understood immediately what she was doing. He concentrated on her hind leg and, before he knew it, Mira was sent flying into a rock.
"I wouldn’t have done that!" Mira screamed. She ran at Shadow, who was fighting Nikki.
"Shadow turn around!" Ron roared. Shadow didn’t have time. Mira was on her in a flash.
"Shadow!" Ron’s eyes narrowed and Mira seemed to be suspended in the air, forced to leave the yipping Shadow.
"What now Ronny?" Mira chuckled, as blood rushed to her face.
"Now," he growled, "you leave my family alone!" Mira went flying into another rock. "Or else. It’s me you want."
"You’re right." Mira stood up. "Prepare to die, Mutt!"
"Look who’s saying ‘mutt’," a voice chuckled. A female German Shepherd appeared in-between them.
"Mother," gasped Mira. "Are you…?"
"Yes," her mother nodded. "I died at the paws of your father. Ron, you don’t know me. I’m Kima."
"H-hello." Ron’s heart was racing.
"Please forgive Mira. This is her father’s doing," Kima said. "But there is a way." She howled and the dogs stopped fighting. Also, a white wolf appeared beside her, along with many other ghostly wolves and dogs.
"Aniu," Balto whispered, as he saw the first white wolf.
"Come out of your hiding, Tumak!" Kima howled.
"Come out! Come out!" chanted the other ghost dogs. A snarling brown furred husky appeared, turning his head every which way.
"Kima!" he snarled, spit flying from his mouth.
"Here, Tumak," Kima growled. "Time to finish this."
"Yes," slurred Tumak. He had a scratchy, slurring, sly voice that sounded like claws on a chalkboard. He made Ron wince.
"Except, I cannot fight you," Kima told him. ‘This battle is Mira’s alone, if she wants freedom."
"Huh?" Tumak growled. His voice sent shivers down Ron’s spine. "She wishes to fight me?"
"Yes." Mira positioned herself infront of him. "Let’s finish this once and for all."
"Your mistake daughter," Tumak chuckled. He began laughing insanely. Mira took her chance and lunged at her father. She had him pinned in an instant.
"He never could fight," shrugged Kima.
"Finish it!" Tumak spat in Mira’s face and she snarled but looked at her mother for guidance. After seeing her mother’s nod, Mira ripped at her father’s throat.
"And don’t come back," Mira growled. "I don’t want to hear your voice again."
"Now, I lift my prophecy and, since he died evil, his has been lifted already. However, the powers of your scars remain. Here are your choices, Mira and Ron," Kima said.
"Mira." Ron walked to her. "I love you."
Taken by surprise, Mira’s eyes widened. "So do I."
"So, Captain Lunatic," Aaron said one day. "I challenge you."
"You’re one Mr. Straight Jacket," Ron agreed. Shadow and Mira exchanged "You know boys" looks and laughed.
"Ron, come on!" they cheered.
"Wake up, Flake!" Shadow growled, frustrated.
Flake lifted her head. "What?"
"Go!" Mira cried. Shadow just turned to the play fight, ignoring Flake.
