Chapter 1
(Akima's P.O.V.)
My paws thundered across the snow, Balto just a foot ahead. I pushed myself harder thinking only about my mother. I had tried to ask Balto more but he wouldn't speak. He lead me to a white wolf, lieing on the snowy earth.
The she-wolf wasn't so white anymore. Her coat was splattered with mud and there was thick, oozing blood, spilling out of several cuts. Blood was splattered on the ground beside her. She looked up.
"My son," she murmured. "My daughter." I dropped down beside her, Balto copying my move.
"I have failed you," she wheezed. How could she have?
"No," I shok my head. "No!" I screamed the last word.
"No?" Aniu whispered. Aniu looked like she was trying to remember the word. "NO?" Aniu looked up, realization etched on her face.
"That word," Aniu growled. "I KNOW IT! I REMEMBER!" I flinched. My mother gasped. "Listen, Balto," she began. Without a warning Aniu began to wretch and turn, howling in pain. I gasped.
"MOM!" Balto and I screeched. Aniu howled louder, her eyes clouding, like a deep fog covering the once clear sky. Sudennly the fit ended and Aniu began to gasp. She lifted her head.
"C-" she began. Then her head fell heavily on the hard earth, her eyes foggy, and open, her jaw stretched wide, and her foggy eyes full of fear. Aniu the great wolf was dead.
Chapter 2
(Akima's P.O.V.)
I paced around the alley, my mind buzzing. Balto walked to me, his face facing the snowy ground.
"Humans took her body," he said. His voice lowered. "She will be skinned. I fought them for it but my head was hit with... a club." I gasped. SKINNED?! Balto's hea was bleading and I sighed.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"I JUST found out that she was alive and now she's gone," Balto murmured. I lowered my head.
"She was brave," I said, meeting his eyes. "OUR mother was a hero."
"I was seperated from her at a young age," he murmured. I sighed.
"I lied," I told him. Balto glanced at me. I explained my whole story.
"Why did she become his mate?" he asked. I shook my head.
"Dunno," I said. Balto looked up at the sky.
"Love can be fake," he sighed.
"How would you know?" I asked. Balto shook his head.
"I just know. It never happened to me, though," Balto replied. I glanced at Kodi, who was approaching us.
"You better be right," I groaned, walking to Kodi.
"I can't believe it," Kodi whispered. I just nodded, not knowing what he'd do.
"I'm so sorry," he murmured, licking my ear. I was about to pull away when I saw a flash of tanish fur. Dusty had seen!
NO! MY PLAN IS RUINED! DUSTY WAIT! I sreamed in my mind.
"Dusty?!" Kodi cried. "DUSTY! WAIT!" Kodi propelled himself after Dusty, with me racing after him.
(Dusty's P.O.V)
I ran, no matter how out of breathe I was. Kodi did love Akima! NO! I heard Kodi and Akima running after me.
"Hey, Dust." It was Aleu.
"MOVE!" I yelled, running around her.
"DUSTY!" Aleu howled, beginning to run after me. I turned a street and ran on. I pushed harder and raced through town to the barn. I arrived inside and threw myself into a stack of hay. I burried myself deep within it, hoping that I wasn't found.
(Aleu's P.O.V)
What was Dusty running from? I wasn't scary. At least not that scary!
"Aleu, can you smell her?" Kodi and Akima were behind her.
"Yeah!" I replied, letting my nose lead me.
"COME ON!" We raced after Dusty's scent. I ran into the shed for the mail team and began to sniff around. My nose lead me to a pile of hay.
"There," I replied. Kodi began to dig through it.
"OW! HEY!" Dusty appeared, glaring. "CAREFUL!"
"We wouldn't have scratched you if you didn't run," Kodi snapped. Dusty snorted.
"I like running," she growled. "You don't have to be a wolf to run you know! Just because you're a wolf-" Dusty broke off. Kodi gasped, his eyes narrowed. He couldn't hide his hurt. But I knew what Dusty meant.
"Kodi-" Dusty said, her voice quivering. "I didn't mean.... KODI!" Kodi had ran out of the shed.
Over his shoulder he yelled, "I'LL LET YOU BE AWAY FROM WOLVES THEN!" Dusty's eyes filled with tears. Akima groaned.
"No," she groaned. "He CAN'T be mad at you! He loves you I know it! You were my ticket to freedom!" Akima sank onto the ground moaning.
"Dusty, I know that you didn't mean-" I began.
"I need to be alone," Dusty choaked. Then she ran from the barn.
"DUSTY WAIT!" Akima and I howled.
"LET ME BE ALONE!" Dusty cried, over her shoulder. I growled at Akima.
"You just want Kodi to make up with her so he'll leave you alone," I snarled.
"NO!" Akima gasped, scrambling back. "I feel bad because it was fine before I came." I was about to agree but my heart wouldn't let me.
"It's okay," I sighed. "They'll get past it." Akima bit her lip.
"I hope," she sighed.
"I know," I lied. Akima cocked an eye brow.
"Don't lie," she growled.
"How did you-" I began. Akima cut me off though by racing out of the shed. "Dang," I muttered.
I ran to my father's boat and curled up on the deck. Then- Awooo! It was a terrified cry. I leaped on the railing of the boat.
"AROOOOOOOOOOOOOW!" It was Akima's howl! I leaped off of the boat and rushed toward the sound.
(Akima's P.O.V)
The group of coyotes encircled me. I turned to run away a red flash distracted me.
Kodi had rushed to my defense!
"Leave her alone," he snarled. Aleu ran to us then.
"Now," she growled.
"How scary," a coyote teased. Kodi launched himself at the coyote, with Aleu leaping at another beside Kodi. I jumped on a particularly large one.
"LEAVE!" I howled in it's ear. I bit it's throat and jumped off, still pulling. The coyote fell to the ground. I spit out blood and jumped on another. We continued to fight until there was one left. I waas about to launch myself at it but it fled.
"COWARD!" I cried. Kodi walked to me, smiling.
"Are you okay?"
"Fine," I replied. Kodi sighed.
"Good," he grinned. "Akima, I-" No way would I let him finish!
"I need to go," I said. Kodi rushed in front of me.
"Wait," he whispered. "Akima, I have to let you know." Please no! I thought. Before Kodi could continue, Ice and Aleu ran to us.
"Kodi," Ice gasped. "Where's Saba?"
"Saba?" Kodi repeated.
"Your sister," tittered Ice, impatiently.
"I don't know," Kodi said. "Why?" He narrowed his eyes.
"She disapeared. Last time she was seen, she was with a black and white male," Ice panted.
"B-black and white?" echoed Kodi. "Did he have a strong build?"
"Oh yes!" Ice said. "VERY!"
"I heard a howl of panick," Aleu interupted. "Was it her? I thought it was Akima but..."
"It was me," Akima said. "Coyotes."
"Kodi have you seen her?" asked Aleu.
"N-no," Kodi stammered. "Not today." Ice palened, his silvery-blue fur glinting in the moonlight.
"We HAVE to find her," Ice said. "That husky is Steele's son!"
