It was a long way to cross The Great Water. Aleu and her pack have not eaten anything for a while. But Aleu was determined to find land.
One of the wolves said "Can we give it a rest yet, Aleu? We can't walk any more."
But Aleu replied "No, we must go on."
A few seconds later, Aleu admited to herself that she, too was starving. She could not feel her paw, and the blistering cold winds pushed her the opisite way.
All, of the sudden, ice began to crack under neath herself, and she yelled "Run!".
Aleu began to run, the others wolves following. She began to panic, worried she might not make it. Aleu looke down at her feet, only to see her spirit guide, Muru. Even Muru was losing faith.
One of the wolves said they saw land, and Aleu decided to go for it.
Aleu led the pack to thet dirction were land was spotted. They were almost there.
Aleu, right then and now, saw that it was a beach, rather similar to the one in Nome. She pictured herself as an eight- week old puppy, playing with Balto her father, and leading her brothers and sisters in a race.
Aleu jumped on to the sandy beach, tired, and collapsed. The other wolves kept on going, but no more than 20 yards.
When Aleu opened her eyes, she realized she was now on a beach no more. Instead, she was in a cottage, with the warmth and glow from a fire place. Then she heard foot steps.
Aleu heard foot steps drawing closer and closer, close enough to see the shadow. Then a blonde headed man came out from the door way. It was Duke.
"Hey, girl", said Duke, not knowing what the "dog" was.
Aleu was howl less. She did not know weather she made a new enemy. or a new friend.
Duke gentely wrapped the warm blenket aroung the damp wolf dog. Aleu at that point, felt what it meant to have a home. But there was no sign of the others. Aleu was begining to worry.
While she was worrying, Duke set aside a peice of bread next to Aleu. Aleu did not want to be greedy, but she did not want to starve either. She stood up, shook the water left on her annd happily chewed on the peice of bread. As she chewed, Duke peted her. Little did she know that this bond was only the begining.
A few weeks had past. Duke was busy working on coloring on blue paper and making chew toys, Aleu would think.
The next day, Duke showed Aleu something special. It appeared to have two wings, a back part and some tiny windows. Aleu was a bit confused.
"I think it should be called, a bush plane" Duke said.
Aleu had no idea whatb Duke was talking about, but she was happy for him. The next week, Aleu had been given a colar. Never before had she felt the feeling of having a home, like her mom. She was living the good life.
Then one day, Duke came home, with a suitcase. Aleu dreaded this day.
Aleu heard about it the week before, through a telagraph, demading Duke come with his "Blue Paper". Aleu was heart broken. But she knew this wasn't her place.
The next morning, it would be Aleu last with Duke. He had packe all of his items, and was taking a boat to Alaska. He, too was heart broken.
Aleu sat in the snow as Duke petted her, one last time.
"I'll miss you, girl. I realy will." Said Duke. He gave Aleu a hug.
"Goodbye".
Duke went on the boat waving good bye. Aleu was happy for him, and herself, too. Maybe her calan was nearby. At that moment, the caln was behind her. One wolf asked,
"How was being pambered like Aleu? 'Cause we were freezing out here!"
Aleu responded,
"Fine", a little wobbily. " Just fine".
A few seconds later, she asked if she could have a moment alone, the others agreeded.
Aleu sat near the current, lifted her paw and began to howl her loudest. She was proud for Duke, and now herself. But she still loved her mother and father, Balto. She had, once again found her true place.
Back in Nome, Balto was sleeping when he was awakened by the strong wind. Through the harsh winds, though he thought he heard a howl. Aleu's howl. But perhaps he was dreaming.
