“Steele! Where are you?” Balto shouted as he ran through the icy roads of Nome. Steele had just run out of the boiler room.
“Balto, I’m right here.” It was Steele. “Gah, I’m not going to be a good father.”
“Don’t say that! You’ll be great! I thought the same thing when Jenna was going to have my pups.” Balto said. He swiftly raised his head. He heard dog barks coming from the main streets. “Look. The race has begun. You want to, I don’t know, join in? Like I did a year ago.”
“Well,” Steele said. “I guess it’ll be okay. Come on!” Steele was already at the edge of the road, ready to run with his old buddies, Kaltag, Nikki, and Star. Steele jumped into the main street of Nome. He finally caught up with the sled team.
“What is Steele doing here?” Some people were calling from the sidewalks. “Get Jack! Quickly, now!”
“You having fun?” Said a dark voice coming from behind Steele. He was lifted into the air suddenly by a net. He squirmed and yelped.
“Balto!” Steele managed to scream. “Help me!” Balto turned his head only to see him self also surrounded by a net.
“We caught them! Balto and Steele. The fastest dogs in all of Alaska.” Balto turned around and saw a human. He was a native to Alaska with an eye patch over his left eye and was missing a few teeth. “Steele, where have you been? I’ve missed you, because you’ve been the thing that kept me rich all this time!” It was his owner, Jack. Apparently, he gambled over the races Steele won. “And Balto, I’ve finally caught you! Think about how much money I could make with you, twenty dollars a race! Come on we’re racing you guys right now!”
Ten Minutes Later.
Balto and Steele are now in line with the rest of the dogs. Balto looked over to see what his boundaries were. He was thinking of a plan to get out of the race.
“Steele, do you know what we must do?” Balto whispered after he had it all thought up.
“No, what?” Steele asked.
“We need to run. He will win a lot of money and then we can lose at the last race! He will bet all or most of his money during the last one. If we lose, all of his money will be gone.”
“How will that get us out of his care?”
“He’ll think we’re useless! He’ll want faster dogs, so he’ll kick us out and we can go back to our homes!”
“Get your dogs ready!” Shouted the referee. “Ready, set, GO!” And they were off. Balto was in the lead with Steele following close behind. Balto passed the finish line. “And the winner is, Balto!”
“Yes! Good boy, Balto.” Jack shouted from the sidelines.
Steele won the second and third race. After twenty minutes, the final race was beginning. Steele was in front with Balto on his tail.
“Ready, STOP!” Screamed Balto only a few feet from the finish. They immediately stopped.
“WHAT!?!” Jack shouted at the top of his lungs. “GO YOU STUPID DOGS!!”
“What did he just call me?” Steele said. “I am not a stupid dog.” And he jumped up and ran straight towards his owner.
“Steele!” Balto yelled. “Come back!” Steele jumped on Jack and bit his arm. Jack looked down and saw his arm wounded with Steele growling and yelping under his body.
“Steele!” Most of the people were shouting from the sidelines. They were coming up to put him in a cage so he would calm down.
“Balto!” somebody said. It was Lani, Steele’s wife. Jenna was following her side. “What happened?”
“Steele bit Jack, our new ‘owner’. He called him a stupid dog and he got so upset about it.” Balto replied. “Look! They’re taking the cage away. Let’s follow them.
