A Lovers Quarrel

Kodi walked up the alley way towards the back porch where Dusty lay stretched in the warm sunlight. His heart slammed against his rib cage he thought “she is beautiful” Dusty cocked her ears and opened her eyes. She saw Kodi approaching her, she got up and stretched herself. She says “hello Kodi” he stopped in front of her and smiles saying “hi” he didn’t realize his tail was wagging as he stood there.
She cocked her head asking “why is your tail wagging did your master give you a new bone or collar” Kodi looks at her quizzically asking “what do you mean” she replies “look behind you at your tail” he says “my tail?” he looked back at his tail and saw it was wagging furiously. He looked back and started to paw at the ground embarrassed. His tail tucked beneath him, she looked at him then nuzzles him under the chin. He smiles and licks her face saying “I got to go” he turns and runs in the opposite direction.
As he turns the corner of the alleyway he says “stupid” he bangs his head against the side of a building. He says “well that was smooth me loosing control of my emotions” he crept his head around the corner of the building and saw Dusty standing confused in the alley. She looked at where he had disappeared around the corner and then walked back onto her porch and disappeared inside her house.
Kodi slumped down to the ground saying to himself “how am I ever going to confess myself to her”
He got up and headed out of town towards his fathers boat.
Balto lay crouched under his soft blanket, he was having a nice dream until someone nuzzled him awake. He looked up and saw his son standing over him, he says “what is it son” Balto got up and stretched in the sunlight. Kodi says “dad how did you show mom you loved her” Balto looks at his son a bit baffled by the question. He asks “why do you want to know” Kodi lowers his eyes to the ground and stares at his paws he says stammering “I…uhh…like Dusty” Balto chuckled saying “It cannot be that hard to tell her” Kodi looked up with hurt in his eyes saying “yes it is every time I am near her my head feels like it is filled with stuffing and my breath catches in my chest” Balto replies “well when I met your mother I saw her a distance away from me, she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I guess you can say love at first sight” Kodis says “then what happened” he replies “well after that your mother discovered for herself that she had mutual feelings towards me and it was either me or Steele of whom she regarded as a jerk. The rest as you know is history” Kodi replies “what ever happened to Steele” Balto looks from his son to the mountains saying “he was banished from Nome and the last anyone saw of him was he was heading over a hill and disappeared” Kodi says “well at least he is gone” Balto nods saying “so I hoped that helped” Kodi nodded then rushed back towards Dusty’s house.
Dusty was sitting on the carpet by the window she thought “why couldn’t he say how he feels to me” but just then she saw Kodi appear in the window he nodded towards the door. Dusty got up off of the floor and padded towards the door. Dusty pushed open the door with her muzzle she met Kodi on the back porch. Kodi looks at her saying “I am sorry I ran off from you” she says “It is ok” Kodi looks at her saying “I….uh…like you” she says “sorry what did you say” he gets angry and says “I like you!!!” she stood there taken aback saying “you like me” Kodi says “yeah I do” she looks at him saying “this is to much to fast” Kodi looks at her saying “what do you mean” she replies “this is to quick” He says “why do you not feel for me” she replies “I …..uh..do but I” she looks away from Kodi.
Kodi looks at her he says “is there someone else” she shakes her head no then he says “well what it is then” she looks away saying “I cannot say” he raises his voice saying “fine then I am leaving” she looks as he storms off down the alley she starts to cry. Kodi runs out of Nome his heart racing he thinks “there is nothing here for me. No one cares my only love rejected me, I am leaving and never coming back” Kodi runs over a small hill and looks back at Nome then disappears into the Alaskan wilderness.
Balto is sitting on the bow of his boat wondering how the chat Kodi had with Dusty went. When all of a sudden he sees Dusty running towards his boat with tears in her eyes. Balto looks at her and says “whats wrong” she replies “Kodi is gone” he says “gone where” she looks at him saying “I dunno he ran out of town and I believe into the wilderness” Balto looked from her to the hills beyond Nome he whispers “be ok Kodi.”
Kodi’s paws crunched in the cold snow, the wind made the pines bend and creak. He stopped and looked around thinking “where am I” he saw a dark shape moving towards him through the trees. His fur bristled he snarled “don’t come any closer” as the shape emerged it took shape. His icy blue eyes stared into the depths of Kodi’s soul, his black and white fur was dirty and soaked with water. Steele looked at him and said “you smell like that dirty mutt Balto” Kodi says angrily “I am his son” Steele’s eyes narrow and he replies “well then I will have to kill you.”
Steele jumped onto Kodi, Kodi tried to get back up on his feet. Steele pressed his paw onto Kodi’s throat closing it to air. Kodi spurted he shoved Steele off of him and bit into his thigh, Steele howled in pain. He bit into Kodi’s scruff and threw him into a tree, Kodi hit the tree head first and was dazed. Steele again pounced onto Kodi and bit into his chest. Kodi became faint-headed from the loss of blood. As he saw Steele raising his head to deliever the final blow he passed out.
When Kodi came around, he saw father standing over him. Balto's head was lowered and his teeth bared. Steele says "so the mutt finally decided to show up" Balto growls saying "why are you doing this Steele?" Steele replies "because you took everything from me not only did you take Jenna but you also ruined my reputation in Nome. I cannot even show my face around there anymore. So now I will return the favor by killing you and your son then I will go and deal with Jenna."
Balto lunges at Steele slashing at his chest and muzzle with his claws. Four long bloody furrows appear on Steeles face. As Kodi watches them fight he feels himself growing weaker, he shakes his head and trys to stand only to slump back to the ground. Steele pounces on Balto pinning him to the ground and says "now this ends, goodbye wolfdog" Kodi screams "NO!!!!!!!!" he quickly gets up and rushes at Steele who is caught off guard. He knocks Steele off his father and into a tree. Steele gasps as they collide hard against the tree. Fur and bark fly everywhere, Kodi sinks his teeth into Steeles front right leg holding on tightly. Steele becomes angrier and desperately tries to shake Kodi loose. Eventually Steele manages to shake Kodi loose. A large chunk of his leg is torn away in Kodi's jaws exposing his pearly white bones underneath. Steele limbs forward to continue the fight but notices two dogs rapidly approaching the fight. He quickly makes his escape and says "I will have my revenge wolfdog one way or another I will have my revenge" he disappears into the bowels of the forest. Kodi collapses in exhaustion from the fight. His father limps over to him saying "Kodi are you ok?" Kodi shakes his head no saying "No dad I am pretty messed up" Dusty rushes to Kodi's side whining in worry. She nuzzles him frantically saying "Oh Kodi I was so worried, I thought you would never come back" Balto looks to the other dog that arrived with Dusty and sees it is Ralph one of the mail dogs on Kodi's team. He says "what are you doing here?" Ralph replies "well after you left to go find Kodi, Dusty came and found me saying she feared the worst and that I might be needed to carry Kodi back to town." Balto nods in agreement then Ralph turns his head to Kodi saying "after all we can't loose our newest member on our team." Kodi smiles weakly and he trys to stand with Dusty letting him lean on her. Kodi manages to climb onto Ralph's back and Balto says "ok, lets get back to Nome" as they leave the forest he turns and looks back saying silently "when you return Steele I will be ready."
Kodi and Balto are treated for their injuries at the vets office. Kodi has a cast placed on his right front leg and on his rear left leg. His chest is bandaged and Balto also has a bandage around his head and chest. They stay at the Vets for a few days so they can be watched to make sure everything heals properly. After they are released Kodi overcomes his shyness around Dusty and they develope into quite the couple. Kodi also becomes much closer to his father than he had been in the past and for now everything seemed right with the world.
