Our story begins in 1870 in Paris, France. The French Revolution has just run it's course and life was getting back to normal. There had been a few changes however. One was that a previously unknown family, the de Chagny's, had risen to wealth and prominence. Another was that a massive and beautiful opera house had just been built, the Paris Canine Opera House. And the last and most exciting change was that the opera is said to be haunted by a ghost. Thus came the fateful day when a young red and white husky came to the opera looking for a job. Her name was Jenna. She went into the managers office for a interview and the manager asked her to sing a line from a certain play. When she had finished, the manager told her that he thought she would do as a background singer and dancer. A few weeks later Jenna was told that the famous La Stella was coming to perform at the Opera and Jenna was going to be one of the main background singers! There was also a rumor going around that Steele, the heir to the de Chagney fortune, was going to be attending. This made Jenna very excited because she thought that Steele was one of the most handsome canines she had ever seen. A day or two later, Miss Stella had arrived and everyone began practicing for the big opening. Right in the middle of a song one day, the manager walked in and asked for everyone's attention. With him were two men Jenna had never seen before. The manager said “Ladies and Gentlemen. As you know, for some weeks there have been rumors of my retirement. These are all true and I wish to introduce to you the dogs that now own the Canine Opera House. Monsieur Kaltag and Monsieur Star.”

Kaltag then spoke up and said “ And it is my great honor to the dog who has become our new patron. Mister Steele de Chagney!”

Steele bowed modestly and said “ I am proud to be your sponsor, and I look forward to the grand opening.” As he started to walk away he looked at Jenna. And looked a little bit longer and was about to say something when Star walked up and said “Excuse me sir, but I'm sorry you can't talk to her right now. Please move over here to the side so they can practice.” Steele grumbled but moved. Out of the corner of her eye Jenna saw Kaltag hit Star on the head for having talked that way to Steele. When the particular dance that they were doing was over Kaltag walked over to Miss Stella and asked her if she would sing a particular song from the Opera. She happily did so and started to sing. “ Think of me. Think of me fondly when we've said goodbye.” This was as far as she got. At about that time a large backdrop fell and hit her. Everyone quickly ran over to help Stella get up. More surprised than hurt she turned on the managers and began a shouting match with them. Eventually Stella got so mad that she gathered up her dress, her assistants, and walked out the door. The managers realized they had made a mistake, but they realized it too late. Who was going to sing the title song? Then someone among the dancers said “ I bet Jenna could sing it.”

“A chorus girl?” asked Kaltag in surprise “Oh don't be silly.”

The same person said “She has been taking lessons from a great teacher.” “Who?” asked Star.

“I.. um.. don't know his name” stammered Jenna.

“Well, let's hear what you got.”

Jenna nervously walked up to center stage and started singing. And the management was blown away. The next week with the grand opening Jenna sang the title song and got a standing ovation. That was when Steele really took notice of her.

(A few weeks later)

Even though Jenna had had such a huge success from singing the title song in the opera, the managers asked for Stella to come back, which she did. That was when the managers began receiving the notes. The former manager had told them about the rumored Opera Ghost, but they thought it was a joke. Especially when Nikki had told them that this 'Ghost' had his own personal box, Box 5, and he received an allowance of 20,000 francs a month! Kaltag and Star had a good laugh over that one! Until the letters started showing up in the managers locked office. And they started demanding things the managers didn't want to do. Such as putting Jenna in the lead role from then on. Somehow, Stella heard about what the notes said and started saying bad things about Jenna. But with every bad remark someone said about Jenna, the more threatening the letters would get. Things also began to disappear, such as a dancers shoes or something like that. And during this whole time Jenna had continued taking lessons with her tutor. Except that she could not see him. Today Jenna was in a rush to get to her room on time because her mysterious tutor was going to meet her there and she did not want to be late. He had nasty mood swings. She had just got in her room when some one knocked on the door. As she got up to answer it she let out an explosive sigh and she began grumbling about how she was busy. She changed her tune quickly when she saw Steele standing there. With flowers. “Good evening Jenna. I was wondering if you would like to go out to dinner with me.”

Now Jenna was really excited. “When?” she asked.

“Um.. how about right now?”

As much as Jenna wanted to she couldn't. “I have my singing lessons with my instructor. I'm sorry.”

“Well, it's only 9:00, so I could have my carriage ready in ten minutes. I'll see you then!”

Before Jenna could say anything Steele had walked out the door. Jenna sighed to herself and went to go get ready for when Steele came back. All of a sudden Jenna heard a sound. It sounded like angry breathing. And it was getting louder and seemed to be coming from every direction. Her hair began to stand on her neck from fear. She turned and started running to the door when the most powerful voice she had ever heard shouted so loud, Jenna wondered if people three stories up heard it. “Insolent Boy! This brave young suitor! Sharing in my triumph!”

Jenna realized who it was that was speaking but was still frightened. She suddenly realized something. “You have been teaching me to sing for several weeks now. Would I be able to actually see you?” The voice then became gentle and said “Of course. Look in the mirror. You will see me inside it.” Jenna was looking at herself in the mirror when all of a sudden, as if by magic, a figure wearing a black suit, a black hat, and a white mask covering the right side of his face appeared. The figure then beckoned Jenna to come to him. Jenna walked forward and reached out to take the dog's gloved paw. To Jenna's immense surprise, she walked through the mirror. He leads her into a dark labyrinth of tunnels. Eventually they arrived at the edge of a lake UNDERNEATH the Opera House. They then continued their journey by boat until they approached a house on the lake. The Figure then took Jenna inside and showed her around. Jenna, however, was afraid of him.

“I see you are frightened of me. I understand.”

Jenna was surprised how sad he sounded when he said that. She wasn't going to let it show though.

“Who are you? What do you want?” Jenna demanded. The dog didn't say anything. Then all of a sudden she realized it. “You're the Phantom of the Opera aren't you!?”

“Yes. I am also your tutor” said the dog.

“What's your name?” asked Jenna after they both had been silent for a while.

“My name is Balto.”

“What do you want from me?” asked Jenna.

“I want you to be able to learn to love me” Balto said quietly. Before Jenna could say anything to this Balto stood up and said “ I am going to leave you alone for a little while. I have things I must attend to. You are free to explore my house. And Jenna... you are safe as long as you do not touch my mask.” With that he left. Jenna (not knowing what else to do) got up and started looking around the house. She was impressed by all the fancy things that Balto had, but what impressed her the most was the massive organ which filled up one whole wall. Soon she sat back down and started to think about that mask.

(Two days later)

As crazy as it sounded Jenna was enjoying herself. She and Balto would do their singing lessons and then talk or go for a boat ride. One thing still bothered her though. What was the mask hiding? Finally, one day she asked Balto if he would play the organ. He was only too happy to agree. He soon became so immersed with it that Jenna snuck up behind him without his noticing. With one swift move she whipped the mask off... and immediately wished she hadn't. Balto let out a howl of anger and horror. Jenna had never heard such a sound, and never would again. Balto turned on her suddenly pushing her to the ground while covering the right side of his face with his paw.

“How dare you!” he roared. “The one thing I keep from you and you have to go get it!” He then stormed off into his room and slammed the door. Four hours later he came back out with his mask back on. He had regained control of himself and told Jenna “Come. I'm going to take you back home.”

Ever since Jenna's disappearance, Steele had run around like
