Betrayal

"Brother!" I screamed desperately as the wolverine's claws dug deeper into my back to keep me down. My brother looked at me and stopped in front of the hill of rocks that led away from our home. I could feel blood run down my cheek from my left eye where the wolverine had scratched me, the pain still throbbing mercilessly through my nerves to my brain. But that wasn't what made me cry out to my brother, it wasn't the pain; it was fear.

Fear that he wouldn't help me like I had helped him when he cried out to me when the wolverine was about to kill him. As a result of his pleas, I ripped the wolverine's ear off and received the wound across my left eye. Now the wolverine had me pinned down on the ground, preparing to take my life.

"Please Brother, help me! Help me! Brother!" I pleaded. My brother looked at me with unsure eyes and stood still for a moment as the rain continued to pour down from the heaven's and from Mr. Leo's eyes as he cried out in sadness at what was happening below him. His (my brother) lips slithered into an evil grin, his teeth showing amusingly and his eyes glaring at me with a sickening gleam in them. That look scared me. It made me feel like he was about to kill me, it was as if he was giving me a hint of his evil intentions...it made me feel like I was about to die.

He kept looking at me like that and without saying or doing anything, he turned and ran down the hill. He left me behind to die. To be killed alone like Mother and Aeolius, my other brother. Even after saving him from being killed he didn't even lift a tail to return the favor to me. The scar on my muzzle that Sol, the brother who's still alive, gave me burned in pain as I remembered his intentional attack on me while we were play-fighting yesterday.

I tried to choke back my tears, but it was no use. Tears ran down my cheeks and mixed with my blood, the new sickening combination of the two liquids dripped onto the rocky ground in a rythmic pattern that made me want to hurl. I sobbed as the image of my brother's disease-like expression froze in front of my eyes, not showing any sign of leaving like an un-wanted guest inside at a party.

"No one left to save you now Puppy," the wolverine snickered evilly. I ignored him and kept looking at the spot where my brother had stood, tears running off of my cheeks and onto the ground as quickly as the rain was falling.

"Luna!" my teacher, Reynald, yelled at me.

"Wha-huh?" I shook my head from my day-dreaming. I looked up at my teacher and prepared myself for his scolding. Reynald was a grey and old wolf, he was about ten years-old, with his right eye swollen shut by a long scar starting from his eyebrow and running across his shut eye and stopping an inch below his eye. He glared at me in a scolding fashion; he never did like it when I day-dreamed during training.

"Do you know what I was saying to you?" he growled, his old voice crackling from the many years of use.

I lowered my ears and head in shame as I answered him in a quavering voice, "N-no sir, I don't know..."

He huffed and stated, "Then from this moment onward, you will hunt your own meals."

I looked up at him in surprise and yipped, "What!? I'm only--"

"Three months old, I know." he cut me off as he stared off into the forest, "by now most wolves your age are being taught how to hunt, but I've taught you how to hunt ever since you were eight weeks old..."

That's right, Reynald is my new guardian now. Since everyone in my family, even Sol, is dead he's the only one I have left. Of course in his old pack he was the one in charge of training wolves for hunting and to fight in wars, just in case. Ever since he took me in, he's been teaching me the ways of being a rogue wolf, which is what Reynald was: a loner.

"Let's see how well you know about your training by putting it to the test. Now go and get something for yourself to eat; it may take awhile before you actually catch something since it's your first time." he walked into the forest and disappeared in the shadows. He had habit of doing that very often when training was over.

I ran into the forest and searched for my meal, but at the same time my mind traveled back to how Sol died. As I thought, I shivered in remembrance. He may have betrayed me, but he was still my brother and to watch him die too was too much for me...he didn't deserve to be killed so surprisingly...

I ran down the hill as Reynald fought the wolverines fearlessly. I ran down the two stories of rocks and finally reached the rock bridge that slanted downward towards the rest of the rocky hill. As the rain continued to fall down, I saw my brother running, almost half-way across the bridge. To see my brother made me happy since I knew he was still alive, and since he was the last one of my family to still be alive.

Forgetting that he had betrayed me, I jumped onto the wet rock bridge and walked cautiously towards him as I yelled, "Sol! Brother, wait for me!"

He stopped and turned to look at me. His face became frightened as he started to shiver. I looked at him curiously and continued my cautious trek towards him, trying to calm him down, "Sol, what's wrong? Are you alright?"

His whole body faced me and he stepped back every time I stepped forward. He shook his head back and forth slowly as he mumbled, "Y-you're supposed to be dead! Th-the wolverines, why didn't they kill you?"

I giggled and replied in a calm voice, "A wolf came and saved me. Didn't you see him?"

HE'S A TRAITOR! DO NOT TRUST HIM LUNA! Mr. Leo, a deceased wolf that speaks to me in my head, warned me. I looked up at the grey clouds and asked Mr. Leo, "Why? He's my brother!"

LOOK OUT LUNA! he yelled instantly, not bothering to answer my question. I looked over at my brother and saw him with his teeth bared as he charged at me angrily. His head rammed into my chest as he pushed me back. My paws slipped on the slippery rock and I felt my body lurch downward off of the edge of the bridge. In desperation my front claws scratched at the rock's surface and were able to dig into the rough layer, stopping my body from falling down the thirty-foot deep trench.

I panted as a shot of adrenaline rushed through my veins and my heart pounded loudly and hardly in fear inside of my chest. I started to pull myself up and looked over at my brother and saw him running down the wet bridge.

"Brother!" I warned him, still trying to pull myself up onto the bridge, "Brother slow down! You'll fall! Brother!" He didn't stop or answer but kept running.

How dare you! Mr. Leo yelled inside of my mind. I knew he was yelling at Sol, but Mr. Leo and I both knew Sol wouldn't be able to hear him. How dare you act this way my cowardly son! How dare you betray your own kin like this! I'll teach you what becomes of those who betray their own family like you have! Mr. Leo screamed at Sol in a relentless rage. I pulled the rest of my body up onto the bridge and faced the direction my brother was running to. I looked up at the sky and saw a bolt of lightening come crashing down just inches away from my brother's face. A deafening sound of thunder followed not long after the lightening struck the ground.

Small little sparks scattered after the lightening struck the ground. Sol reared and yipped in surprise and pain as I saw some of the sparks jump at him and burn in his eyes. My brother shrieked and whimpered in pain as he backed away from the spot where the lightening had struck the ground. He couldn't keep his balance on just his hind legs, and as a result, his paws slipped across the watery ground and he fell backwards.

I watched as my brother fell on his back and rolled towards the edge of the bridge in pain. He was too close to the edge and his weight fell off the the edge of the bridge, his body being pulled down towards the bottom of the trench...and towards his death.

"BROTHER!" I screamed as I ran to the spot where he had once been. I looked over the ledge and saw his corpse at the bottom of the trench, a little pool of blood near his head as his life left him. I sobbed and backed away from the edge, laying down on the wet rock as I cried. I was alone. I truly was alone.

Both of my brothers were dead, my mother was dead and my father....

My father? I lifted my head and remembered that my father still hadn't returned from hunting this morning. With hope in my heart, I wobbled onto my paws and started to walk down the bridge cautiously to find my father.

I rested on a patch of clover, my eyes fixed on my reflextion that stared back at me in the lake. Two scars were ontop of my muzzle, the ones Sol had given me in his own rage. And there were two on my left eye, one being shorter than the other. They were both cut off by my open eye, but they continued down past my eye, the short one stopping half and inch past my eye while the longer one was a inch and a half below my eye.

It wouldn't have mattered if my left eye was swollen shut by the two scars the wolverine had given me or not. I was born blind in my left eye, never being able to see out of it no matter how much I wanted to. I forgot all about hunting, I just wanted to sleep and forget my painful memories of seeing my mother and two brothers dying before my eyes.

No, none of them died innocently...not even my father, who I found dead in the forest with four small holes in his body. All four members of
