Chapter 1
Balto has a vision
Balto stood on the bow of the boat, watching for his son, Kodi, to come back from the mail run. He had been gone for some time and Balto was worried. He shook his head and looked back at Boris. He was cleaning the boat like he always did at the time. Balto laughed and looked back towards the outskirts of town.
“What are you looking at Balto?” Boris asked.
Balto looked back, “I’m waiting for Kodi. He should be back by now.”
“He’ll be back. Always has.”
Balto frowned. There was something else, now that he thought about it. Something that he hadn’t felt in a long time. Then, right as he began wondering what it was, a familiar scent hit his nose. He sniffed the air again. It smelled like his mother Aniu. But then, it also smelled like himself. Balto chuckled to himself and shook it out of his head. He looked back towards Nome and saw Kodi and the team coming in.
Balto jumped off the poop deck, and ran towards town. His large paws padded softly across the snow-covered ground. He felt the snow crunch and crackle. He sniffed the cool air and felt it sting in his throat.
He arrived right in town, as Kodi and the rest of the team was being unhitched. He barked and got Kodi’s attention. Kodi trotted over and nuzzled his father.
“Hey dad.” He said
“Hi Kodi, your in late.”
Kodi rolled his eyes, and they started walking down the lane, “Kirby got a stone in his paw and we had to stop. It would’ve been fine if Master hadn’t taken a short cut through the woods. It would’ve been record time!”
“Don’t let it get to you son. So how’s things with Dusty?”
Kodi sighed, “She’s been kinda stressed lately.”
“How so?”
“I’m not sure, she’s been asking about my feelings, and has been awfully quiet during the runs. I think its stress, but I’m not sure. Do you think it could be something else?”
Balto laughed, “Your worrying to much, women can be hard to understand.”
“Kodi!”
The two wolf dogs turned to see a lovely gray husky trotting after them. It was Dusty. She shook her coat and ran after them.
“You weren’t trying to leave without me were you?” She said playfully.
“No, Dusty, why would I do that?” Kodi said.
“Well, I’m not sure, you’ve been so into your runs lately, I feel like we hardly have any time for ourselves.”
“Is that all? Well, okay then. How about this, after a nice bath, I take you out to the shore and we watch the sunset?”
“That sounds fine.”
“There you are, Kodi. Problem solved.” Balto said, “Now I’ll leave you two alone. I need to find Jenna.”
Balto wandered over to were Jenna lived. He jumped up some logs and onto the roof of a shed. He looked into the window, and saw everyone, but Jenna in the living room. He frowned and jumped down.
“Balto?”
Balto turned and saw Jenna coming out from the shed. He smiled and walked up to her. He nuzzled her fur.
“Balto what are you doing here?”
“I wanted to talk to you.”
“About what?”
Balto looked around, he saw Kirby and Ralph coming down the street. Kodi and Dusty were both talking by the rest of the team.
“Lets go in here.” He said motioning towards the shed. They walked inside. A basket was in the corner with a red blanket in it. It was from when Kodi, and Balto’s daughter Alue were born in. Balto sat down next to it, and Jenna curled up in it.
“Its amazing how I can still fit in this.” Jenna said.
“Jenna, I smelled a wolf today.”
Jenna perked her ears up. She layed her head down on her paws and watched him intently. Balto looked down at his paws.
“I was waiting for Kodi to come in and I felt…something. I don’t know what it was, it was kinda like how I felt when my mother was…. around. But, it can’t be her can her?”
“You said you smelled it?”
“Yeah, it smelled like Aniu and it kinda also smelled like me.”
Jenna lifted her head up. She still looked at Balto intently, “Balto you don’t think.”
Balto sighed, “Jenna, we’ve been over this before. Its not Alue.”
Jenna shook her head, “No not that. Do you think it could be…. a relative?”
Balto didn’t say anything. He had never thought of it being someone else other than Aniu of Alue. He frowned and stood up. He smelled it again.
“What’s wrong Balto?”
“I smell it again.”
Jenna sniffed the air, but set her head back down. She closed her eyes and smiled, “Wolves.” She muttered, “Always with their noses.”
Balto laughed, “Yup the super sniffer.”
He walked out the door. As he started down the street he hear Jenna call, “Let me know what you find.”
Balto smiled to himself and ran back to the boat. He Jumped over the gangplank and ran along the beach. For some reason he just wanted to run. He was half-a mile from Nome when he turned and ran back. He was running up the gangplank, he saw Kodi and Dusty walking along the beach. Oh no, he thought. I forgot about those two. He shook his head and walked up into the boat itself. He curled under a blanket and soon fell asleep.
Balto stood upon a hill. Below him stood a lovely wolf. She had a copper colored fur, with a black under belly and face. One of her ears and an eye were black also. Balto shook his head and stared at this strange wolf. She looked exactly like him. He walked up her. She turned and smiled. She had bright blue eyes and powerful leg and chest muscle. Balto couldn’t look away from her.
“Hello Difera.”
Balto awoke in a cold sweat. He blinked and shook his head. But he couldn’t clear the name from his head. Difera. Where had he heard that before? He shut his eyes, trying to remember. Nothing. He growled, and curled up. He just layed under his blanket, staring off into the distance. It was until a few minutes later that he realized Kodi and Dusty were still out.
Chapter 2
Difera
The dream haunted Balto for days to come. It always had the same wolf and she always said, “Hello, Difera.” Balto could not understand it. He was positive that he had never seen this wolf before in his life. He was going to confide in Jenny again, but feared that she’d think he was cheating on her. He wouldn’t bother Kodi with this, for he seemed to be having trouble with Dusty again. The only others he would tell would be Boris, but somehow he had figured it out. He was constantly pestering Balto, so much so, that Balto was actually forced to go into town just to get some peace.
It had been a week now sense he first had the dream, and the wolf scent was getting stronger every day. Balto stood by frozen waters edge and looked out across it. The Great Sea was what he had heard a passing goose call it. He shook his head. Such nonsense a wolf would never believe, nor a dog, he added. He shook his fur and stood up. He heard Boris coming and wasn’t ready for another one of his dream talks, like he had received so many times when Kodi and his daughter Alue where pups.
He sighed and trotted into town, only stopping at the Boiler room to check if Jenna was in there. She wasn’t. But Steele, and his son Rial were. As soon as Balto stuck his head in the door, they were at him.
“Well, well, well.” Steele sneered, “If it isn’t the mutt!” He spat in Balto’s face as he said the last part. His son grinned.
“I would’ve thought you’d be out pulling a sled, Steele.” Balto said, “Seeing as that’s all your good at lately.”
Steele laughed, “Oh Ow. I’m in so much pain because of that crappy come back! What happened? All your little wolfie friends run away? Afraid that they would get caught spending time with a mutt like you?”
“Nice one dad.” Rial said
“Oh yeah, just spiffy. Using the same insult twice.”
Steele growled, “You better watch it phony boy. Just because you got Jenna and saved the town doesn’t mean that I can’t still beat you down anytime.”
Balto rolled his eyes and turned to leave, but Steele ran in front of him, blocking his path. Rial circled the two his eyes on Balto.
“Don’t think I haven’t smelled it Balto.” Steele snapped, “Every dog in town knows that you little friends are coming closer each day. I’d howl them a little message saying to stay away, but ya know. That’s your specialty.”
Balto growled and shoved aside Steele. He stalked down the street, their mocking laughter ringing in his ears. There were times when he wished he did have some wolf friends. Then he’d at least be able to beat up Steele instead of
