The drawing of the line

Two old plums belonging to Balto and his generation sat in a fruit bowl on his desk. Balto looked down at them and sighed.
“I wish I knew where those maps could be”
He picked up the stale plum and lifted it to his mouth. He took a tiny piece but then spat it out.
It tasted rotten and smelled like his Uncle Griswald, which believe me isn’t a good thing!
He sat and stared out his window when…
“BALTO!” called the beautiful Jenna. “SOMEONE’S WANTS TO TALK TO YOU”, she carried on.
“You were interrupting but oh well, how bad could it be”, Balto sighed lifting the phone to his ear.
“Sorry Balto but it’s terrible here in Great Britain, the French are invading and you are our only hope. Please help us, it’s manic. Please, for us!” the sergeant pleased as a bomb went off in the background.
“Sir, if you need me so much I think I could rearrange my rota but…” Balto never finished his sentence.
“OH THANK YOU!” he cried and put the phone down.
“Who was that and what have you said yes to”, asked Jenna feeling suspicious that something unknown was going on involving Balto.
“They’ve asked me to fight in the civil war!” Balto exclaimed and looked at the blue bottle half dead buzzing on the window sill.
“YOU COULD BE KILLED!” Jenna worried frantically.
“But that’s a risk I’m willing to take”, Balto replied patting her on the back.
“I assure, I will come back alive”, Balto carried on.
***
Balto wished he hadn’t said that boarding the ship. He looked back at Jenna who was crying and waving her red handkerchief, and then they were off.
LATER IN THE EVENING…
Balto leapt into his bed and fell into a nightmare.
Bombs roared and people were screaming, a building shattered. Glass cracking and the London eye falling into the river.
He woke up and wiped the sweat from his forehead and sighed.
“What have I gotten myself into”, he worried thinking what the next day could bring.
***
Balto woke to hear a howl.
“Owwww!”
Balto ran to the deck and saw a brow/creamy wolf (Kit.)
“Hey, how’d you get here. This place is going to the deadly Britain.” yapped Balto running over to the stranger.
“Hi, I’m Kit!” Kit yowled happily.
Now Balto could see he was a puppy!
“WE’RE HERE!!”
A big black German Shepard came bounding across the deck (with a telescope around his neck!)
All around there was devastation.
“I got here by this ship, I lived in America but I plan to go back there when I’m older. I’m an orphan!” Kit howled sadly.
“Poor you, you can come with me if you want…but it will be dangerous!” Balto barked.
In the distance a rumble of thunder howled, the rain shattered and buildings crumbled.
Balto and Kit jumped off the boat and ran up to a Great Dance with a huge sword.
“AAAHHHHH!!! YOU ARE ZE MEDALLING BALTO! YOU MUST BE KILLED!” the huge Great Dane said running towards Balto.
Kit leapt out the way; Balto grabbed a sword that way lying on the ground and plunged it into the Great Dane’s huge paw.
He let out a yowl that thundered the buildings.
The Great Dane pinned Balto down to the ground and bit Balto’s leg. He let out a mournful cry in pain and then winced in terror.
“NOOOOO!” Kit howled running towards the Great Dane and knocked him off his feet.
“1, 2, 3…AND…” Balto and Kit cried running forwards with their swords and knocked the Great Dane down. Blood filled The River Themes.
“Is he ok?” Jenna sniffed down the end of the phone.
“He’s just fine, in fact…he’s brought you a souvenir”, and the phone went dead.
The boat arrived in Alaska; Balto led Kit to his home.
“Hi!” Jenna cried happily and ran towards Balto and hugged him. “Who are you?”
“I’m Kit.”
“He has no home, no relations…nothing. I promised him he could stay with us till he was older.” Balto howled.
“Ok”, Jenna replied.
Balto picked up Kit and began to play with him.
And so that is the story of a brave hero, a great friendship and great fighting.
Look out for the sequel “Hello America!” including the character Kit and his return to America.
