her comfort. (Unless of course, it was Ripper.)
Finally the urge to find out who was nuzzling her had become irritating. She let go of the embrace to find who had held her through the sobs. Blaze was staring back at her. “Thank you, Blaze.” He couldn’t speak. What was he doing back there? She walked away, hoping to find the den in the same shape as it was.
Low and behold, the den was mostly as she had left it. The leaves, which had once strung the entrance, had now been burnt off. But, other than that, everything was the same. From every dog toy, to every blanket.
“Now,” someone had said, “we need to find an alpha. I am challenging anyone who comes forward.” She raced out of the cave.
“I’ll challenge you, Cerbereus.” Blaze had returned from the field.
“Right here, Blaze. Give it your best shot.” Blaze stepped forward. “The first one to yell ‘Y-o-u-r ~ r-i-g-h-t-s’ is the loser.” Cerbereus nodded his head. He mumbled out of the corner of his mouth, “You won’t be alive to say those pesky words, Blaze.” Blaze just kept his eyes on his opponent.
Lily had had enough. “Look, I think there should be an alpha female here. Believe me when I say that I will never, in my deadliest nightmares, let you be alpha male.” Cerbereus smirked.
“I can take on both of you.” Cerbereus took the chance to bite Blaze while he was still watching Lily. Blood gushed from his leg as the bite wound met its mark. Lily took this chance to attack Cerbereus from behind. She bit around his neck. This was her chance. She bit down hard around the neck bone and after she had broke through the skin, let go. He took his jaws off of Blaze and went for Lily. She jumped out of the way as he lunged after her. Blaze and Lily growled at the now beaten up wolf. He now looked scared out of his mind. Lily walked swiftly over to him. “If you want to live, yell those two words.” He yelped the two words, running for his life. The rest of the pack cheered and ran to Blaze.
Lily looked at Blaze. He had been bitten in his back leg. She motioned for him to go back to the den. He followed.
“C’mon, lie down.” He obliged, now feeling her gaze approach his body. He was pretty muscular but not heavily muscular, as many Alaskan Malamutes are. He had large paws, considering he compared them to a dog’s. His eyes were a honey-glazed, hazel and had an almond shape to them. Her eyes then rested back on his bite.
She licked the wound, gently and comfortably. He didn’t even wince as she traced her tongue around the edge. He sat there; just focusing on the way her tongue was brushing his skin.
They didn’t know that Zach and Dusty were watching them. Zach chuckled lightly. “They’re so perfect for each other and they don’t even realize it.”
Finally, after what seemed like hours, Lily stopped licking him. She got up, walked over to the entrance. “C’mon, now, we need to get you over to the river.” He looked at her questioningly. She smiled and said, “A bath is in order. Look at your coat.” He looked down at his bloodstained fur. He got up, shook his fur, and followed her out the entrance of the den.
Once at the river, he looked at his reflection. He had so many scars and bruises from the fight that he looked as if a hole heard of Elk trampled over him. He saw Lily enter the lake with ease. She swam easily to and fro. She motioned for him to come in. He obliged. Feeling the coolness from the water rushing over his skin, he sighed. She dove down and swam back up, bringing with her, a fish. She threw it on the bank of a river.
She went down a second time and didn’t come up. He looked around anxiously. She looked at him frantically searching for her. She came up, panted and smiled. “Sorry, I got a little carried away.”
They stood there, staring at each other until, “Ahh!” They followed the sound to the edge of the forest. When they got there, a horrible scene was playing. A bear had a small girl in front of him; a large mess of people gasping at the sight. The crowd of people squealed as they saw the wolves. Most muttering had bits of, ~ “They’ll take the small girl and eat it, foot by foot.” Or ~ “I heard that if a wolf sees the child, the she will be kidnapped and turned into a wolf.”
The bear steered towards the girl. Blaze jumped at him, knocking him towards the girl. The small girl was knocked out of the bear’s grasp and would have hit the hard stone if Lily hadn’t nipped at the edge of the shirt of the child at the last minute. She nosed the child to stop her tears.
Blaze, however, continued to fight. The bear smacked him away a second time, leaving him limping. The part-wolf barked at the bear, in hopes that he would be afraid. After some barking, the bear retreated.
The people paused, some saying that they would be brave and rescue the baby from the wolves.
Then, Lily had a plan. “Blaze, now’s your chance. Go and get the girl and gently and bring it to the humans.” Blaze looked at her quizzically and then he nosed the girl forward as gently as he could. Some people gasped. He brought the child to what looked like the young girl’s parents. The people stood afraid whether to run or jump up and down.
Blaze backed away and put on his best puppy-dog face. The people yelled and cheered. They went over to Blaze and Lily and patted them on their heads. The father of the child came up. “Good Boy, Blaze.” Blaze smiled.
Then, Zach and Dusty came tumbling out of the wolves. “Ha! Ha,” Zach said, wrapping his paws around Blaze’s neck. “Not a dog. Not a wolf. You’re a hero!” Lily and Dusty barked in agreement.
Blaze looked at the cheering and knew that this was the time if any. He came behind Lily’s ear. “Lily, c’mon, I have something to show you.” He raced into the wood, her following after. He slowed down to let her catch up. She looked puzzled but he kept going until he reached the waterfall.
“This is what you wanted to show me,” she said, wondering which fight made him lose his sense. “No, follow me and you’ll see.” He jumped through the waterfall. “Are you coming or what?” She hesitated but jumped through.
Inside was a small cavern, dusty from low use. “It’s so gloomy.” Blaze smirked. “Gloomy? Are you kidding? It’s beautiful.” She paused, thinking her words over carefully and said, “All I see is a dirty cavern, not that it isn’t beautiful in its own way.” He chuckled slightly and said, “That’s because you’re looking at the glass half full.” They walked until they reached a smaller cavern.
He smiled and motioned for her to go through first. She went through.
He came in after her. “Stick close, okay.” She nodded muttering, “Not like that’ll be a problem.” He led her through until they came upon a rock filled with crystals. “And to the south.” The light from a hole in the cavern reflected on to the walls, painting a beautiful array of colors. “Oh, you’re right, Blaze they’re beautiful.” He stared at the happiness on her face. “Yeah,” he said, sighing. “Beautiful.”
She turned to see him only an inch away from her face. She broke the space and nuzzled him. They were a perfect match. She licked his face. He first looked surprised at first, then nuzzled her.
~ Two years from Then ~
“I really don’t know what happened from then on. No more hunters came through because your father became legend and a hero,” a young wolf said to her pups.
“I know! I know! You had us,” a voice of a young wolf pup rang. The mother of the pups chuckled. “Yes, we did. You better watch it, smart stuff. I brought you into this world I can take you out.”
“Ah, what a shame. She’s so cute. Hi, Lily,” a male wolf said, kissing his mate. “Hello, dear. Just answering another, ‘How did you and daddy get together.’ Can you tell that I’m not tired of telling it?” He smiled. “I better get these rascals to bed,” she said, walking to the wrestling pair of male pups and the barking female pup. “Cody, Saha, Jasmine, I want all of you in bed, now.” They bombarded to their sleeping spots and yawned.
“Now, where did we have left off this morning? Oh yes here,” he said nuzzling her, crawling into bed.
“Zach just walked in, Honey.” He nosed her ear and said, “So?”
“Dusty and Zach probably don’t want to see this, Blaze, dear.” Zach chuckled. “No, its okay, Lily. Dusty and I are fine.” Dusty scoffed dramatically. “Speak for yourself. That image will scar me for life.”
They chuckled and went to bed.
“Now, they’re gone, the kids are in bed and I love you very much so can I finish where I left off now?” She chuckled and nuzzled him.
Seven words came to mind at this moment.
‘He isn’t just their hero. He’s mine.’
