The Silver Wolf

The Silver Wolf

The wolf hybrid ran after the coyote, oblivious to the dogs behind him. “Hey, half-breed,” one of the dogs tempted, “I’ve a message for your mother. Owwww!” The dogs cracked up laughing and soon joined him. The wolf paused to look out of the corner of his eyes, turn around, and let out a low growl. The coyote quickly turned to grab on to the wolf’s tail. “No, Blaze, let him go.” Blaze wouldn’t budge. The dog let a smirk cross his lips. “Half breed, he is. Are you a half-breed, too, coyote? Half dog? I thought not.” He turned to his fellow dogs. “You see, they do not deserve to be half dog. The half-breed is a half a beast, which should be shunned. And you,” he turned to the coyote and the now teeth-baring hybrid, “are no exception.”

The coyote finally pulled Blaze from his spot and they went back to the den.

Blaze didn’t talk on the way back. Instead, his head was held low and only his footsteps were heard. The coyote knew that he couldn’t get through to him through words. Until he got back, he would let blaze mope. “Not a dog. Not a wolf,” he said, muttering to himself. “All he know is what he is not, not what he is.”

Once back, he thought he knew just what to do. He gnawed on a bone furiously, which would usually make Blaze laugh. Blaze just walked past him, farther in to the den. The coyote then took out an old dog toy that he had found in the town and threw it near him. Blaze just stared and shrugged it off. Blaze found his blanket, nosed under it, and snuggled through it until he found an opening. The coyote gave up and lied down next to him.

*******THE NEXT DAY*******

“Boys! C’mon, it’s time to get up,” the green-eyed wolf said, tackling them to get up. Blaze stirred. “Alright. Alright. I’m up, Lily.” The wolf barked in appreciation. “Zach, c’mon, I want to get there early so we can meet some friends,” Lily said to the coyote, who was still half-asleep. The coyote yawned at her (annoying) early morning routine. “Alright, don’t get your howls in a twist.”

Lily was all white except for her eyes, ears, and tail. Different from most wolves, but the thing that made her stand out was her eyes. Her eyes were a rare emerald green. Her eyes were so rare that they were not seen in these woods. (Except for her, of course). She was excepted by most dogs, because she looked like a larger version of a Husky, even though she wasn’t. She was curious and fun loving, to the extent that she was a risk taker. She also had compassion for others, seeing them for their full potential.

Blaze and Zach slumped behind her, yawning as she sniffed the air, smiling brightly. The woods around them were covered in dew and had a fresh pine scent.

They reached the river, which separated the two wolf packs that roamed these woods. The small waterfall clashed with the river water, splashing Zach, who was drinking there. “C’mon, Zach, I want to be there early,” she rang, noticing the sun reaching the top of the sunrise sky. “Hi, Blaze,” rang a small girl. However, her father ripped her away from eye’s view.

“Look what we have here,” came a snide voice, as Blaze, Lily, and Zach came down the dark alley, “two beasts and a filthy half-breed. How precious.”

Lily walked up to him. “You are as pathetic as your reputation, Ripper. Did it take you all night to figure out that line?” He scowled at her.

“Look, guys, wolf-dog’s got a girlfriend.” It was her turn to scowl.

“No, I’m not his girlfriend but I consider you lucky because you have found,” she looked behind him, to the rest of the dogs, “your boyfriends.”

Blaze and Zach were trying to stifle their laughter, but were failing hopelessly.

With scowls from all the dogs, she knew she’d given enough insults for the day. “C’mon, Blaze, Zach, I’ll race you to the den.”

Blaze raced her, the pride in his chest swelling. “That was great, Lily. You were awesome,” he said, truly overjoyed. “You’re welcome. Now c’mon, this is supposed to be a race.” She sped ahead of him.

Little did they know, someone was watching them. Not just someone.

A hunter.

Lily looked around. She could’ve sworn she heard something. Just then, she saw a flash of green camouflage. She had to warn the others. She let out a long warning howl.

Not seconds after, she heard a gunshot. Who was shot, she thought, wondering who would be stupid enough to come to a warning howl. She went to the sound’s source. She looked to the body on the ground. Who was shot? Blaze.

“Blaze! Blaze, what were you thinking? Why did you come to a warning howl,” she said, observing the gunshot wound in his shoulder, which was now bleeding. “I’m sorry, I thought you were in trouble. I was just going to check it out.” She sighed at his bravery. (Stupidity, more like). “C’mon, you need to get back to the den. Where’s Zach?” He tried to lift himself but failed terribly. She helped him up. “I told him to go on back to the den. He’s probably asleep by now, knowing him.”

They finally reached the den and she motioned for him to come to the brighter spot in the den. He obliged and she began licking his wounds. He felt comfort from this yet the pain that came from pulling the bullet from his shoulder had made him wince. He began to shiver, from the cold and the blood loss. She nuzzled him and lied down next to him.

**********THE NEXT DAY**********

He awoke, yawned, and quickly tried to get up. He fell, now remembering the events from last night. Just then, Lily came through the den entrance. “If you’re going anywhere without Zach and I. You need help.” He huffed and tried again. It all came with the same result. A smirk slid across her face. “Now, can you admit you need help?”

He huffed and mumbled, “Okay, I need help.” She smiled brightly.

“Good. I’m glad you’ve admitted it.” She lifted him with her muzzle.

“Do you want to go into town? I heard that there’s a couple new dogs in town.” He nodded and limped his way to pine tree next to the den.

“Yeah, I suppose exercising my body is good for me.”

They headed for the town, Lily helping Blaze. Once they had reached the edge of town, Blaze had seen a beautiful husky. He was stunned. Mouth open, he stared at her.

She was a beautiful tan with a pink nose that matched her collar, which held her gold license. Her tail stuck gracefully atop her back, wagging at the attention she was getting from both dogs and people.

Lily looked at Blaze’s reaction to her and rolled her eyes. She came up behind his ear. “Blaze, stop drooling.” He quickly closed his mouth. Lily sighed. “How about you stop staring and go meet her.” She pushed him over to her.

“Hello, I’m Lily. May I ask your name?” The dog looked them over and stepped back. “I am Rose. You’re a wolf. You should be out in the forest. Not here, in town.”

Lily looked taken aback. “Well my presence obviously isn’t wanted. Blaze, I’ll just be across the way. If you need me, you know where to find me.”

She marched off.

“Umm,” he said, trying to find conversation. “Want to go chase some sticks?” She scoffed. “There is no way I would go out with a flea-bitten mutt like you! How dare you even think about…that.” And she walked off, leaving Blaze to mope alone.

Meanwhile, a few hours later, Lily had gone into the forest. Blaze was waiting on a barrel for her and she wanted to make sure that no hunters were in the forest this time.

Just then, another member of the pack came out. “Dusty, what’s wrong?”

The tan-colored wolf had tearstains running down her cheeks.

Suddenly, Zach came out of the forest, panting. “Lily, I’m so sorry. The fire…I mean, we couldn’t…your dad…” He couldn’t even make sentences.

“A fire? What are you sorry for? And what couldn’t you do for my dad?” She obviously was drawing blanks in her mind.

Dusty couldn’t take it anymore. “Lily…your dad was caught in the fire…we couldn’t do anything for him. I’m sorry, Lily.” Lily couldn’t take it.

She ran through the forest, the fire now blazing hot. Then, ~CRASH~ a flaming branch fell down next to her. ~CRASH~ Another one. She ran faster, now towards the field nearby. But unexpectedly, rain started to fall. She sat down, tears pouring out of her eyes.

The burnt forest was now revealed to her through the rain.

As she stood atop that hill, she realized that she was now the true heir to the genes of the ‘first’.

Her family was the first to start this pack and now that her father was gone, establishment for alpha was in order.

Her father had taught her everything she knew. And now he would no longer be able to teach her. With her mother gone, she would have to learn for herself. She found herself crying again.

Suddenly, she found herself being nuzzled by another. She would have seen who it was nuzzling her but she didn’t care. She needed that comfort, that protection. She didn’t care who was there, taking care of her comfort. (Unless
