The Night wolf:
Siren and the night wolf
“Skylar, why won’t you see that something’s wrong here!” Balto said in frustration.
“It was probably was a bear,” Said Pinkbear, Nightsky’s daughter, “I don’t see why you want to make a big deal about it.”
“I don’t know,” said Nightsky.
“The wolf was torn to pieces. If I knew him, which I might, I could not recognize him!”
“A bear could have done it!” yelled Pinkbear.
“There were not prints of a bear.” Said Balto cooly.
“There were no prints at all!” She snapped.
“So how do we know that a bear did it? Exactly there were no prints! You can’t tell me that is not strange?” Balto continued, “No new snow has fallen. It hasn’t been windy today.”
“Was it could have been yesterday.” Said Sunnysky.
“It was a new corpse. It was fresh.” Said Balto. That got all of them. They waited in silence. Balto waited for someone to make another argument. “It was not a bear.”
“You would know! You saw your mother murdered and definitely not by a bear.”
“Pinkbear!” Snapped Nightsky.
“You know your right,” said Balto thoughtfully. He turned to leave.
“Balto, Wait!” said Nightsky.
“No, Skylar she’s right. I will leave you alone now.” He walked out leaving the wolves speechless. It hurt to know that she was right, but she was. His mother’s murder was made to look like a bear killed her. Maybe this one was too. But the markings were too different. “Balto, we don’t know that.” Said a voice in his head.“I know we don’t. But it’s a start.” He said back.
Balto sat on the fence part of the deck on the boat. The night air was very cold, too clod for the spring. Nightsky was keeping secrets from him. Three wolves were killed the same way. He didn’t know what to do. What was worse thing was that Skylar didn’t believe him. Balto howled in despair. “If there is any help, I ask for it.” He prayed.
“You shouldn’t beat yourself up like this.” Said Borris.
“I know,” he sighed.
“Dads upset.” Said Kodi. He sat in the shed with the other dogs.
“How do you know that?” asked Kirby.
“Nightsky showed me the emotions of each howl.”
“There’s emotion’s to it?” asked Ralph. The dogs in the shed listened to Balto’s howling. Soon they quieted down.
“Maybe I should talk to him.” Said Kodi.
“If you do tell him I’m sorry,” said Nightsky walking in.
“Why?” asked Kodi.
“He and I had a fight. My daughter also said something to him,” he sighed.
“Over what?”
“He didn’t tell you?”
“Tell me what?”
Nightsky looked down, “there three wolves found dead. They were so torn to pieces that no clan could recognize them as their own. There is going to be a meeting about what to do with the bodies.” There was a silence.
“That’s awful,” said Dusty.
“That’s not all. Your father thinks there is more to it then just a bear or something like that. We had a fight about it and you know how stubborn both of us are. The worst thing is my daughter had to put her two cents in.”
“Skylar, I think you and my father should work this out,” said Kodi. The leader smiled. “You are your fathers son.” He got up and left. He turned back, “By the way, thank you.”
“For what?” asked Kodi.
“For calling me Skyar.”
Siren walked to the very edge of the forest. The small town almost glowed from the lights, soon to be turned off. “So this is it,” She smiled, “Now tomorrow I begin my search.”
The next day Siren walked into the town. She was careful not to be seen by the humans. She saw the dog shed and instantly knew what it was. She heard the laughter, the companionship like she’ll never have until she finds the night wolf. Siren walked in and all eyes were immediately on her. “I am looking for the night wolf.”
“Nightsky is not here today.” Said one of the dogs. Nightsky? Was that what the night wolf was called. She just realized she was in a dog shed and not wolves. "Where can I find him?”
“Dad, do you know where Skylar is?” asked a dog. A …wolf! Walked in. A strong feeling came over her. It was a calming feeling, an unearthly feeling.
“No, I do not.”
“You are wolf, are you not?” asked Siren.
“To a certain extent.” The wolf nodded.
“You must know the way to the night Wolf,” she smiled.
“I do know where Skylar lives.” Her head was spinning; for one the Night Wolf was called Nightsky and Skylar? For two this wolf or whatever ‘To a certain extent’ meant was talking in riddles! It frustrated her.
“Will you take me to him?”
“Yes I will. May I ask of you your name?” he asked.
Siren smiled. She liked this earth wolf already. “I am called Siren.”
“And I am Balto,” he said, “This is my son Kodi.” Balto lead her out of the dog shed into the forest. She felt like an idiot. The night wolf was close and she didn’t feel his presence. Regardless she liked this wolf. He was kind, an unearthly kindness. Siren shook her head trying to hide the thought. She must keep her emotions to herself. If this was not the wolf she was looking for she did not want to lead anyone in the wrong way. She would keep her mission secret. The strong presence that the wolf called Balto made her senses go wild.
“If Nightsky is a little hostile. It’s because we had a fight yesterday,” he said.
“Thank you just the same,” she said.
“Balto?” Skylaa asked. He walked into the shed.
“He’s not here,” said Jenna, “In fact he is out looking for you.”
“Really? I better go look for him.”
“No need.” Said Balto walking in with a beautiful wolf. “Nightsky, this is Siren.”
He nodded to her, “Hello,” he turned back to Balto, “Balto, please forgive me.”
“there’s nothing to forgive,” Balto said. His voice clam and sincere, “Siren wants to meet you,” he said disregarding the apology.
“I am pleased to meet you, Night wolf.” She bowed her head. Nightsky turned bright red. Balto tried not to giggle. Nightsky looked at balto for help, “thank you.” Siren got up and grabbed his paw. She looked at the bottom of it. Nightsky looked at the dogs. Balto just smiled and shrugged. Suddenly she pulled back. “Your not the night wolf!” she backed into Balto. Her sense got stronger and went wilder when she touched him.
“Who is the night wolf?” Balto asked. Siren ran toward the door then stopped. “I can’t,” she whispered. Siren left devastated. So many years of searching and never knowing. She silently cursed the curse the Demon wolf put upon her. This would have been finished years again. “That stinkin Demon wolf!” she thought, “Why did I get my hopes up.”
Balto didn’t know what to do. She seemed like she needed help. He looked at Jenna. She gave a smile and nodded. Jenna knew he had to ehlp her. “Siren, I know you need help, and I am willing to if you let me,” he said once he caught up to her. She looked at him.
“You can’t…” she turned away.
“Why not?” Siren looked at his paw. It had the mark of the night wolf. The crescent moon covered the top of his paw. It was on the top.
“Balto, why are you helping me?”
“Because you need it,” he smiled sweetly.
“Where did you get that mark?” she gestured to his paw.
“I have no idea.” She wanted to jump. She hoped this was not a trick from the demon wolf. Maybe…just maybe her long search was over. She smiled and followed Balto back to the shed.
