It was Halloween night in Nome

Halloween Night and Halloween Frights

By Highland Wolf

It was Halloween night in Nome. Late October, and bittery cold. Steele and his pals, Nikki, Kaltag and Star were all crouched round the roasting boiler in the Old Mill.

"We should give him the fright of his life this Halloween!" Nikki laughed.

"Yea! He'll be so frightened, terrified, petrified..."

Kaltag started, but was interrupted by Stars mindless answer,

"He'll be scared!"

Kaltag gave Star a nasty grunt and the thumped him on the head. Steele gave a snigger, "Right, here's what we're gonna do..."

Boris gave out a long sigh, “Another Halloween. Another night of endless attempts to scare me,”

Just as Boris said this, Balto jumped on top of him snarling and growling like mad with his hair raised and drool dripping from his mouth. Balto realised what Boris had just said and changed to his normal face, began to chuckle.

“Never scared you yet,” He said.

“Nope!” Boris said triumphantly, “And you’re not going to any time soon!”

“You just wait and see, Boris!”

Balto walked off at that last phrase, and jumped down from the boat and walked into Nome to think of another plan to scare him. It was becoming dark now, and the sky was pitch black with no single star glistening in the darkness. Spooky Halloween night was not Balto’s favourite. Nome began to turn their lights on, and patches of snow were glowing with yellow light from the house windows. Balto walked down one of the dark alley ways.

Kaltag poked his head from behind a wall and looked down the alley.

“Steele, he’s down here,” He whispered.

Steele and his trio tip toed down the alleyway, hiding behind the odd wooden crate or barrel. Balto twitched and put his ears back as he heard a creek of someone stepping on a stray plank of wood. He looked behind him, but there was nothing there. Balto had a shiver up his spine. He held his breath, and continued walking.

Kaltag gave Star a nudge and Star stared up in fright at his furious face.

Star gave out a moan of dread.

“Shut up!” Steele hissed, “You’re gonna ruin the plan!”

Balto could now hear someone talking in an angry tone. This was the last straw. Balto turned around and ran out of the alley in terror. Not looking back and not saying anything. He could believe anything on a dark, cold Halloween night. Steele didn’t want to admit that it was his own fault that plan one had failed. He just made a grumpy face. Star looked more petrified than Balto had, thinking something bad was going to happen because he had made Steele angry. Though Steele forgot about this, and moved on to plan two.

“Alright, lets move on to Balto’s wreck of a home out by the shore, and wait there for him to come back,” Steele whispered to his trio, and in an instant, they tip toed back out of the alley and headed towards Balto’s boat.

Balto walked back towards his boat, now more slowly, as he was not so frightened. But he was anxious to get home. Suddenly, he noticed that he was just outside Jenna’s house. He decided to take a quick peep in the window, just to see what she was doing this Halloween. He hoped on top of a couple of fire wood logs and looked in through the frost-incrusted windows. There was Jenna, and her girl Rosy looking at their pumpkin. Rosy’s father came through into the room smiling, with a tea light candle in his hand, and a match in his other.

“Come on then, let’s put it outside!” He said and they all walked over towards the door.

Jenna followed Rosy out the door. She watched as the placed the carved pumpkin in the snow and they lit a candle and put it inside. Jenna barked along with Rosy’s laughs.

“Alright, lets go inside now, it’s freezing out here,” Rosy’s father said and then opened the door and walked inside to the cosy house. Rosy ran over to the door and stepped inside as well. Just as Jenna was about to walk in too, something caught her eye. A shadow jumped down from something and ran off down the alley. She gave a slight gasp of surprise, and looked down the alley way beside her house. There was nothing there. Jenna wondered if it was a ghost. She shook her head,

“No, Jenna. The day has gotten to your head,”

And at the sound of Rosy’s call, she forgot about it, and ran inside into the warmth.

Balto walked quickly back to his boat. It was getting colder and colder, and darker and darker. A chilly gust of wind gave Balto a little push, and he shivered, and broke into a much faster walk, now very eager to get back home. He ran through the deep snow out of the town and onto the shore.

Steele was sniggering and laughing silently, with Nikki, Kaltag and Star at his side. They were hiding right under the boat in a sort of den that they had made in the snow. They were well hidden in the darkness. Though they were laughing, all of them felt slightly anxious. None of them had noticed Balto walking towards the boat, and were worried if Balto was already there. All of a sudden, there was a loud clunk, from above their heads. Star gave a stream and sank his head in the snow. Kaltag and Nikki closed in on each other, and even Steele gave a slight whine of fright.

“Wha-wha-what…” Kaltag stammered, “… wa-was that?”

Nobody answered him. Suddenly there was another loud clunk and they all gave out a shriek and ran out of their den.

“Maybe we should see what it is?” Said Steele, pretending he wasn’t scared, and acting as if it was a rat or something, and not a scary ghosty. Kaltag, Nikki and Star gave out a whine all at the same time, and followed the terrified Steele onto the boat. The wood creaked under their heavy paws, and they couldn’t hear anything, just the lonely, whistling wind. Steele thought he could sense something, and jumped up in the air with a yell, swinging his head all over the place.

“What is it Steele?! Did something get you! Are you alright?!” Nikki asked in a panicky tone. Steele didn’t say anything. After he had calmed down, they all carried on walking. Nikki, Kaltag and Star walked right behind Steele, following his footsteps and cowering in his shadow. There was another deafening bang and they all fell backwards.

“WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!” Steele bellowed in terror.

There was another bang and all four of them had shot of in different directions in absolute shock, shouting and screaming. Kaltag and Star crashed into each other and fell into a heap on the floor yelling. Nikki tripped on and over-hanging nail and slid down the boat and smacked into Kaltag and Star. Steele, who was yelling the loudest, galloped over to the heap of dogs, not noticing them and tripped over them and CRASH! They were all bewildered on what was happening, and unable to stop them selves, continuously shrieking as loud as they could. The next thing the new it… SPLASH!

Balto ran over to his boat. What was all the yelling and screaming about? Suddenly he was knocked over by a crowd of dogs all running back to Nome, completely petrified. He stared at them at saw that it was Kaltag, Nikki, Star and Steele! Balto would have laughed on a normal day, but he suddenly became terrified. What were they running from? Balto stepped slowly closer towards the boat. He could hear his heart beat thundering inside him. He climbed up onto the boat, shaking. He could hear strange noise’s from below. He took a gulp and walked close towards the cabin. He suddenly slipped and fell into a puddle of water. He gasped, and before he could shout out in fear, he saw two familiar feet standing in front of his nose.

“What’s all this yelling for?” Boris asked angrily.

Balto gave out a sigh of shear relief.

“I thought…” Balto started, but didn’t want to sound silly telling Boris he thought there was some ghoul on the boat, so he changed to,

“Never mind,”

Boris began to laugh. Balto didn’t see what was so funny.

“Boris, what are you laughing at?” Balto asked suspiciously.

“Steele and his lot! You should have seen the fright I gave them!”

Balto’s frown turned into a smile. That’s what they were running from, Boris!

“What did you do?”

“Well, I took my bucket down to the shore, filled it with water so It was ready for when I was going to scare you…”

“Me? Boris!”

“Well, you were gonna try to scare me, so I was gonna try to scare you! Anyway, I heard someone walking towards the boat. I thought it was you, and got into my position. But it was Steele and that lot that came up and I soaked them by mistake! Quite glad I did though! Heard they were gonna scare you,”

“Sounds likes Steele,”

“So when you came up, I couldn’t really play my joke on you could I? I had no water!”

Balto laughed, then said,

“So it was you who mad the puddle on the floor and all those spooky noises?”

Boris nodded his head then stopped in surprise,

“Spooky noises? I wasn’t making no spooky noises, Balto,”

Balto suddenly looked at Boris in terror. He gave out a yell and leapt down from the boat and ran off. Boris began to laugh.

“Only joking, Balto! Happy Halloween!”
