Chapter 1.
THE VICTIM
Balto was on his way to Jenna’s house. Jenna was feeling ill for the last three days and Balto had to visit her every day. He didn’t know what was wrong with Jenna, so he was very worried about her. When he was about to reach her house, someone called his name. It was Boris, the goose. Balto turned around and smiled at Boris.
“Hey, Balto, can I have a word with you.” Boris asked
Balto came over to him. “Yes, what’s up?”
“Strange things are happening, Balto.” Boris whispered in Balto’s ear.
“What’s wrong?” Balto asked the goose.
“Didn’t you notice anything? Since Suar came to Nome, something weird started happening. Jenna for example…” Boris didn’t finish his sentence, because Balto interrupted him.
“What are you talking about?! Jenna is just a bit ill and it got nothing to do with Suar.”
“It is not just Jenna. Every time I talk to Suar, I feel very cold inside and I am just scared of her. I know she won’t do any harm to me, but it feels as though she has a curse on her!” Boris looked frightened, but Balto just gave him a funny look.
“Can you explain me what is in your mind? There is nothing wrong with Suar, and that thing about the curse you just said is nonsense!”
“Oh, you don’t understand me, do you?” Boris got angry with Balto.
“I think you need some rest, Boris.” Balto smiled.
Boris gave up and left Balto. Balto ran up to Jenna’s house and knocked on the window. A red husky came up to the window and opened it. The husky looked very ill and exhausted.
“Hi, Jenna. Do you feel any better?” Balto asked.
“Oh…well…I don’t know what’s wrong with me and neither does my girl Rose, but I think I am just ill or I don’t know.” Jenna looked down.
“You say no one knows what’s wrong with you?” Balto got anxious.
“Balto, I know that you know that I will be alright, and that is what I need – your support. Don’t worry too much.”
“Jenna, you think that I am blind? Yesterday when I came to visit you in the morning you looked better! I am bloody worried, because I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
“Nothings will happen to me, because I have your love that protects me.” Jenna licked Balto’s cheek, but Balto still looked very frightened and didn’t say anything to Jenna. “If Kodi or others will ask about me, just say them, that I am fine.” Jenna added.
“But you’re not fine.” Balto said very quietly.
Chapter 2.
REUNION WITH FAMILY (a flashback to the time, before Suar met Balto)
Suar was wandering in the dark forest. She had to live alone for the last four years. Her home was the dark forest that she used to never leave. This day Suar felt lonelier than ever.
“How long have I got left of this miserable life? Why is it happening to me and why am I the one to suffer after all that happened? I am the innocent one that fights for justice and this is what I get. After all these years I have cooled down inside and I am not seeking for revenge anymore. I feel sorry for my deeds and I wish I didn’t try to kill Balto! In fact I wish I was killed along with my family.” Suar used to talk to herself, because there was no one else to talk to. She sat down on the ground and looked up at the sky. “Where is this all gonna end?” She asked herself.
“It will end soon.” Someone answered.
“Aaah?” Suar turned around and stood up straight away. Behind her she saw big white female wolf. “Who are you?” She muttered.
“Did you forget me already?” the white wolf asked.
“I…never knew you.”
“Really? My own daughter doesn’t remember me!” the white wolf turned away.
“You can’t be my father, can you?” Suar asked the white wolf.
“No, I am not your father, Suar.” The white wolf sounded disappointed.
“You can’t be my mom, coz she die long time ago.” Suar felt very said when she mentioned her mother.
“Her body may be dead, but her soul is immortal.” The white wolf said.
“I don’t believer you.”
“Did I say anything incredible?”
“Leave me alone!” Suar insisted and bared her teeth.
“Do you want to get out of this life once forever?” Suar didn’t reply anything. “Your niece, Aleu has a pack on the other side of the ocean. I am sure that she won’t mind one more wolf joining her pack.”
“Who the hell is my niece?” Suar asked.
“The daughter of Balto. She is a wolf as well.” The white wolf smiled.
“She can’t be. Balto is not a wolf, so how can she be a wolf?”
“I am a wolf thought. But anyway, come to the seashore, and there you will see the ice bridge that leads to that side of the ocean.” The white wolf said and disappeared.
Suar didn’t move. She didn’t know whether to believe the stranger or not. However, she decided to check it. When Suar came to the coast, there was an ice bridge that led across the ocean.
“The white wolf didn’t lie…” she said and crossed the ocean.
Chapter 3.
ALEU (a flashback to the time, before Suar met Balto)
Suar was on the other side of the ocean. She was amazed. That morning she was in the dark forest and now she is in a completely different place. That place looked just like Alaska.
“So, where do I go now?” Suar asked herself. She was looking for the scent of the wolves and eventually she found it.
It was clear that the wolves were in the woods by the coast. Suar didn’t know what to say when she will meet Aleu. She could say that she is Balto’s sister and she was sent by Aniu. Or she could just say that she is a lone wolf that doesn’t know where to go. Then Suar realized that she didn’t even know how Aleu looks like. However, she decided to risk it. The ginger wolf howled, hoping that Aleu and her pack will hear her.
Suar was right. The wolves turned up to see who is howling. They surrounded Suar and growled at her. Suar was looking for Aleu among the wolves. ‘The leader must stand out from the pack’ she thought. Suar was right again.
After a few seconds the wolves stepped aside to make way for their leader. Suar saw a small grey female coming towards her. The female looked very serious and confident.
“What are you doing on our lands?” She asked. Suar found her voice irritating.
“I didn’t know that these are your lands. My pack left me and I’ve been wandering for the past five days all alone with no food.” Suar looked down.
“I feel sorry for you. What are you going to do?” Aleu felt sympathy for Suar.
“No idea. I will probably starve very soon. Sorry for stepping on your lands.”
“Don’t worry. Would you like to join our pack?” Aleu smiled and Suar felt more confident in her actions. ‘You are very naïve’ Suar thought and smiled back.
Chapter 4.
I WONDER…
Balto was on his way to his boat. He couldn’t stop thinking about Suar and a thought that Boris was right appeared in his mind and wasn’t leaving him. “That is not possible”. Balto said to himself, hoping that his words will make him feel better.
Suar was on the boat. She was walking around the boat. ‘I have to talk to Balto. I must do that, I must confess. But what am I gonna say? “Hi, Balto, I tried to kill you…” and then I will say the rest?! 1, he won’t believe me, 2, he will think that I am just joking or worse, he will think that I am out of my mind and 3 – I will never bring up myself to do that.’ The same thoughts were running through Suar’s mind, but suddenly Balto returned.
“Hi Suar. Hope you don’t find my home too boring.” Balto joked.
“No, it is wonderful.” Suar made a fake smile.
“I bet your wolf-life was much more exciting!”
“What are you talking about?” Suar gave Balto an odd look.
“I am talking about the life you had before you met me.” Balto explained
“My life was much worse before I met you.” Suar was laughing.
“Sometimes I wish I could be a wolf and live in a wolf pack, hunt, defend my lands…You get what I mean.”
“Same.” Suar said quietly. She hoped that Balto didn’t hear her, but he did.
“Why? Where did you live all your life?” Balto looked surprised.
“No where. I lived in a dark forest all by myself.” Suar had a very sad look.
“Why?”
“Well, after my family was killed I hated this place and I wanted to leave it. I did so, but then I realized that I had no where to go.” Suar wanted to say the truth, but she couldn’t.
“Then you are free to stay in Nome for as long as you like.”
Balto looked in Suar’s eyes. ‘See. There is nothing wrong with Suar. Boris is just being weird.’ He thought. Suar was looking at
