Blitz?”
Before he could answer, Gill cut him off.
“Oh, I know...you’re just hungry for a piece of the loot!” He retracted a claw, and sliced the packaging open. After a few slashes of his paw, he tore off a piece that was slightly larger than half. He held it in his mouth. “I caw thish piece, becawse it wash meh idea!!” He threw Blitz a wink and a smile.
Blitz only stared at him, somewhat offended, but otherwise glad that he came through with Gill’s silly dare. Come on, he told himself. You deserve this. Spoil yourself just this once!! With an uneasy shrug and a sigh, Blitz lowered his head and sniffed at his share. He snapped at it a few times, and within seconds, the slab of meat was gone.
Gill finished his piece as well, and his licked at his chops happily. But seeing that something kept Blitz from sharing his enthusiasm, he quickly started looking around for some new means of entertainment. His gaze landed on a group of human children playing joyfully in the street. They laughed and ran around, shouting and yelling as they urged each other to pass a small ball to them. One kid jumped in mid-air, caught the ball, and then evaded another kid to hurl it to someone else.
What fun, Gill said with a smirk. He then turned to Blitz, who seemed to be concentrating on looking at the ground. “Hey, Blitz,” he said.
Blitz looked up. “Yeah, Gill?”
Gill gave him another mischievous smile. “You up for some ball?”
Blitz looked at him, shocked. He wondered what he should do...surely, if he refused, Gill would think him a chicken, or worse, he’d lose his best friend. He thought it over quickly in his head. Well...it’s just a game, he thought. I’m not hurting anyone or stealing...it’s just a game of ball. What could go wrong? Blitz looked up at Gill, and then returned the smile. “Sure...why not.”
“Excellent,” Gill said with another smirk.
Ambyr and Haywire walked down the lane, satisfied at having just finished their latest meals as well.
“I never knew that bowl of sludge could ever taste so good on an empty stomach,” Ambyr said with a smile. She turned her head and looked over at Haywire.
“Yeah, no kidding,” he replied. “I’m up for a little excitement...wonder how Blitz and Gill are doing.”
Ambyr’s smile suddenly transformed into a frown. “Ugh...don’t remind me,” she said. “I know he’s Blitz’s friend and all...but...I don’t know. Something about him is a little...off. Don’t you think?”
Haywire thought for a moment. “Well...I can say I certainly wouldn’t want to be neither Blitz or Gills former owners...now that you mention it, some of the pranks they played were a little cruel.”
Ambyr shook her head. “I don’t trust him.”
“Uh-oh.”
“What?” Ambyr asked. But Haywire sprinted ahead of her, running towards the window of the post office. He lifted himself onto the windowsill, and gestured for her to sit next to him. Ambyr reluctantly took his side.
Through the window, they caught the postmaster pacing the room, with Mr. Drago glumly in a chair. The postmaster was walking up and down the room, waving his arms around furiously.
“I don’t know what to tell you, Henry,” he said. “We’ve already had some reports from a few neighbors, as well as the angry butcher from farther down the road. These are your dogs, so all fingers are pointing to you. ”
Mr. Drago sighed, and the postmaster shook his head.
“I’m sorry, Henry,” he said. “But if you can’t keep your team under control, I’m going to have to let you go.”
Henry Drago looked up at him, a look of petrified shock stuck on his face. “...I...”
But the postmaster held up a hand, silencing him. “There’s nothing I can do...if I get one more report from anyone...you’re finished.” And with that, he walked into the back room and shut the door behind him.
Mr. Drago sighed again, and looked at the ground.
Haywire looked at Ambyr and whined. “We have to find Blitz.”
“I’m not so convinced this is entirely Blitz’s fault,” Ambyr said in return. “I think we both have a good idea at who’s also at fault here.”
Haywire thought for a moment. “...Mr. Drago?”
Ambyr slapped his forehead with her paw. She went over to Haywire and swung her head at him, lightly knocking him on the side.
“Numbskull,” she said seriously. “It’s Gill!!”
Haywire shook his head around. “Ow.”
“Come on. We’ve got to find those two before they prank someone else. Blitz and Gill won’t be the only ones paying for it if we don’t.”
“You really think its Gill?”
Ambyr frowned at him. “You know that when my job is at stake, I don’t joke around, Haywire. Let’s go!” And with that, she lowered herself from the window, and started sprinting down the road. After getting his bearings, Haywire trailed behind.
After about twenty minutes of searching, Haywire stopped. “Where the heck can they be?” he asked.
“No idea. But we’ve got to keep looking. If they screw up one more time –“
“Do you think maybe you can forget your job for once, and concentrate on Blitz?” Haywire said, somewhat annoyed. “More than that, this is Blitz we’re talking about here. What if he gets deported again? Or worse...”
Ambyr shuddered. “You’re right,” she admitted. “Either way, we’ve got to keep searching.”
Haywire was about to say something back, but he was suddenly cut off by a hoard upset, screaming children in their way. They all stood, yelling and running after something. “Give us back our ball, you good-for-nothing mutt!! Come back here!!”
Haywire and Ambyr looked at one another. “Found them,” they said in unison. They both darted forward.
The crowd continued advancing forward, their backs to the two dogs. Some were sobbing. Others were angry enough to pick up stones and start throwing them. Ambyr gasped. “It’s a riot here!! We can’t let anyone here talk, or we’re done for!!”
With difficulty, Ambyr and Haywire squeezed through the mob. When they finally reached the head of the crowd, they caught of glimpse of Gill running off far in the distance, a small sphere tucked in the jaws of his mouth. They also saw Blitz, following right behind him. They could here Gill laughing as he and Blitz disappeared behind a corner.
Ambyr growled. “I’m going to go after them. You stay here and make these children happy.”
“ME?! How the heck am I supposed to do that?” Haywire whined.
Ambyr rolled her eyes, “Find another ball. The sooner you do, the sooner this whole mess can be sorted out...hopefully with either having Blitz deported, or us fired.”
Haywire sighed, but reluctantly nodded his head. “Okay.”
Haywire and Ambyr both turned around, and sprinted off in separate directions. Ambyr raced forward without turning back. She followed Blitz and Gill’s trail closely. She watched as she allowed herself to be led back to the boiler room again. The door was closed shut, and for a second, Ambyr debated with herself whether she should go in or not. Certainly, just rushing in wouldn’t be the smartest choice, but there was no way she could allow herself to let this fly by, and let some nutshell from New Yolk mess this up for any of them.
She stormed over to the closed door. Inside, she could hear Gill still laughing. However, she didn’t hear Blitz say anything. She extended her paw, and pushed the door open. Gill and Blitz turned their heads.
“Oh, look who it is,” Gill said, smiling. He had the ball in his paws, and he tossed it in the air, catching it again and again. Blitz looked at her.
“Ambyr...what’s going on?”
Ambyr snapped her head to him. “WHAT’S GOING ON?! Honestly, Blitz, do you have any idea how much trouble you and your so-called ‘friend’ caused?”
“Hey, hey,” Gill said, holding up his paws. “Don’t be hatin’. This is all n good fun, ain’t it, Blitz?”
Ambyr turned her angry gaze to him. “Fun? How can you say that?”
Gill shrugged. “I didn’t mean fun for others, I meant for us.”
“Well, forget you,” Ambyr said. “What about all those people you pranked?” She turned her head back to Blitz. “Stealing? Tell me, Blitz, is this true?”
Blitz looked up at her. “Well...no...I mean, it is...but...I just...you know,”
“Blitz and I were just reliving our pup hood,” Gill stepped in. “Lighten up a little, will ya?”
Ambyr growled at him. “Lay off, you miserable flea. Blitz is with us. No one invited you here, so do us all a favor and get lost.”
“Hey, cool down,” Blitz said defensively. “Gill and I were –“
“Think again, Princess,” Gill growled back. “Blitz is with me. He always was. Why would he ever want to be friends with an overzealous b!tch like you (And I mean that LITERALLY, folks!!)?
Ambyr and Blitz gasped.
“Gill,” Blitz said. “There’s no need to act like that! Ambyr and I –“
Gill then turned to Blitz. “Aww, come on. Don’t pup out on me now. You’ve always known me, Blitz. Why are you siding with
