wolf like Dart.”
“Ohh my. Honey come take a look at this.” She whispered to her husband.
“Are they going to have puppy’s mom?” Jack asked his mother.
“Well, they seem like very good friends. Should we take in Aleutian first?”
“Ohh no, we aren’t getting another dog.” Jack’s dad told them.
Dart woke up and looked at Jack. Jack put out his hand so Dart could sniff it.
“Are you and Aleutian going to have pups?”
At the sound of her name, Aleutian got up and shook her fury body. She looked up and realized that they had moved.
“Where are we Dart?” Aleutian asked.
“In the family room.” Dart told her.
Aleutian cocked her head and looked at Dart.
“What’s a family room?” she asked with curiosity.
“Well, uhh, it’s a place where the whole family gathers and talks. Most if the time, Jack’s dad watches the tv. At Christmas, they bring in a huge tree and the sit around it opening boxes with fancy wrapping on them.”
Aleutian, still not understanding, nodded her head.
“Never mind.” Dart said.
The humans walked away. Dart got up with Aleutian right behind him.
“Are we going to have puppies Aleutian?” Dart asked.
“I don’t know. If I did, where would I go?”
“Good point, do you think I could drag my owners into getting you?”
“No, please don’t.”
“Why?”
“I enjoy being free. In a house, I feel like a nut enclosed in a shard shell. Everything is closed.”
Dart looked down at the ground. If they were ever going to have pups, what would Jack’s parents do with them? Or with Aleutian?
The next day, Jack went to school and came back with important news.
“Mom, dad, Dart guess what!”
Now what? Dart got up from his sleeping place and went up stairs to hear the big news.
“What son?”
“You know how I entered that contest to go camping for one week? Well, I won!” Jack yelled joyfully.
Dart gazed up at his owner. He was all happy about going on a trip for a week, while he and Aleutian might have pups. But it mustn’t get out in the town. Dogs might start congratulating even before Aleutian decides. Dart wondered if Aleutian was ready to be asked.
Dart walked back down stairs to go out the back door. He was thinking again, of what Aleutian would say about the new that he wanted to tell her.
Aleutian started to dig her way into a dump full of garbage. Dart was walking down the road that lead to where Aleutian lived. Dart walked down the path behind a mall. Aleutian pulled out a full chicken from the dump. Dart continued to walk down the alley. Aleutian saw him and jumped down wagging her tail pleasantly.
“What are you doing down in here?” Aleutian asked.
“Well, my human is going on a trip for a week and… well he won’t be back…”
“For a week?” Aleutian asked
“And I have a question for you.” Dart told her ashamed.
“What?” Aleutian trotted over to him and sat beside him.
“Well are we going to have pups?”
“Dart, I have no idea. I haven’t made up my mind yet.” Aleutian nuzzled him.
Dart looked at her with a sad look. Aleutian got up and walked over to the chicken that she had found earlier.
“Want some? It’s fresh from the dump.” Aleutian said.
“Umm, I’m not the best with, you know, dump food.” Dart told her.
Aleutian nodded her head, tore off a piece, and started to chew. Dart watched her eat. He never wanted to admit it, but Dart thought that it looked good. Aleutian saw him looking at her.
“Is there something you want to talk about Dart? You have that look on your face.”
“You know me all too well.”
Aleutian smiled at him and tore off another piece.
“Are we still mates?” Dart asked who he thought was his mate.
Aleutian chocked on the piece that she had in her mouth. Aleutian started to cough and hack.
“Are we still mates? Of course, we are still mates. Why do you ask?” Aleutian growled.
“I thought we were. You always called me your mate.”
Dart stared at her.
“Sorry, I’m not really my self today.”
Dart almost had tears in his eyes from being relived.
“You’ve never growled at me before.”
Aleutian went over to Dart and nuzzled him. Dart had a tear fall down and hit the floor. Aleutian almost attacked it and tried to lap it up. Dart stared at her.
“Sorry, I haven’t drunk in a few days.”
“Come to my house. I can give you some water to drink.”
Aleutian walked beside Dart. Aleutian was very thirsty and was drinking anything that was drink-able that was in her path. Dart lead her into the basement and into the boiler room where the bowls sat. Aleutian literally attacked the water. Aleutian drank her fill and lay down on the carpet. Dart licked her on the cheek and fell asleep.
“What do you want when you have puppies Aleutian?” Dart asked with his eyes closed.
“Well, a nice home with a nice place where it is soft to have the puppies… nice mate, she opened her eyes just enough to see Dart, one who looks after me.” Aleutian whispered.
Dart gazed up at her and laid his head on her back. She rolled over so Dart was on his side. Aleutian laughed and rolled on her side. Dart nipped her neck while Aleutian chewed the tip of his tail.
Suddenly, Aleutian got up and ran out the door. Dart thought she left because she heard something. Then a few minutes later, Aleutian came back in the back door caring a big fluffy pillow with small pink flowers on the pillowcase.
“What are you doing Aleutian?” Dart asked while he watched her being stuff out of the pillowcase.
“Well, my home got took over by alley cats, and I knew you wanted me to move in for a long time. Plus it’s very cold out there at night.”
“I thought that you said that you didn’t want to move in because it was like a hard shell.” Dart reminded her.
“I did say that, but I want to move in though. But sometimes I will sleep out side in the cold.” Aleutian told him.
He smiled at her and took her pillow out side in the snow. Aleutian looked at him with confusion.
“What are you doing Dart?” she asked.
“You don’t want to move in here. I know you don’t, besides, you would probably hate it in a house.” Dart told his friend.
Aleutian smiled and ran out of the door. Dart ran after her to find a new home. After a few hours, they found a small, but comfortable place under the stairs of a house. Aleutian squeezed through and placed her pillow on the leaves that were under the stairs. She laid her head on the pillow and fell asleep. Dart knew that he did well and he wanted to keep it this way. Aleutian would be happy in the cold, as she usually is, instead of being in a house full of humans. If they were going to have pups, than Dart wanted them to live where their mother lived. Dart had an itch in his stomach. He wanted to know what Aleutian’s decision would be to have pups.
“Would Jack mind if I would have puppies with Aleutian? He really likes her. His parents sure wouldn’t mind. Hopefully.” Dart argued with him self.
Dart ran back to his home with a pain in his stomach. When he got home, Jack opened the door right in front of Dart.
“Dart, ohh boy, am I glad that you’re here. I’m leaving tomorrow, but I’m only staying for two days. Are you okay with that? Or maybe you can come along with me.” Jack ran out of breath when he finished his sentence. Dart stared at him. Jack was a weak, helpless boy. If he were a dog, he might just make it for a couple days.
“Jack honey, you better get ready for camp!” a voice called from inside the house. Dart watched. If he was going to go with Jack for a couple of days, he would have to be away from Aleutian. The though struck pain into his stomach. Dart ran off the porch. He was thinking of running away with Aleutian, but what would she say about the idea.
“Mom, have you seen Dart? He was right here a minute ago.” Jack asked in a worried voice.
“I don’t know honey. He’s not my dog.” His mom yelled from upstairs.
Jack was running around the house calling Dart’s name. Jack told his dad, who got very worried. Jack ran out side in the deep snow.
“Jack, don’t go out side. It’s going to be 40 below tonight.”
Jack’s eyes widened.
“Ohh no, Dart’s out there! I left the door open. He must have gone out side.” Jack cried.
Dart ran till he found Aleutian who was in the boiler room.
“Dart what are you doing here? It’s going to be 40 below tonight.”
“What?!? I better get home, but I can’t see that well in the Dark.”
“Aren’t you part wolf like me? Won’t you be able too se in the dark?” Aleutian asked while laying on her back enjoying the warmth.
“I am, but my dad was also part husky. My mom was pure bred husky.” Dart reminded her.
“Ohh, right. Sorry. My mom was the wolf and my dad was the germen shepherd.” Aleutian told her self.
Aleutian gazed at Dart.
“I made up my mind
