What Once Was…Is No More

Autumn sighs while in deep thought, looking up in the night sky. She wonders why this even happened…what she cared so much for… was lost. It will never be the same again.

She lies on her back on her favorite place in the world. Where wild horses run free and the bald eagle soars the skies. Where wolves lived free… and away from the danger of humans. She takes a deep breath and smells the beautiful place she lives in. She thinks back to where the disaster first started.

On a quiet, clear day, Autumn was walking through the forest when she heard a noise. She listened intently and turned around to see where the noise came from. She saw Rocket come out of the bushes and he smiled at her. She smiled back and kept walking. He walked up to her and said,” So… what’s up?” he asks. She answers him in a polite tone,” I’m going to see my grandmother today and tomorrow. Why?” “ Oh, just wondering.” “Ok” she says. They walk through the forest in complete silence and Autumn wonders why he is so quiet. She shrugs it off and keeps waking. “ I better get going,” he mentions. Autumn nods and keeps walking toward her grandmother’s den.

The next day, she hears a howl from Rocket and goes to see whet he wants. She finds him in the middle of a meadow with his best friend with him. Autumn walks toward him and sits in front of him and says “ Yes Rocket?” Rocket sighs and mentions that he feels like such a jerk right now. Autumn looks at him in wonder and curiosity about what he is talking about. Then Rocket says,” I don’t think this is working out Autumn. I think we should stop being mates.” Autumn looks startled and a little hurt, wondering what she did wrong. Rocket then mentions” It’s just that were aren’t going to see much of each other since you are going to be doing some sled training and ill still be in the woods. I still just want to be friends though.” Autumn looks at him and is about to say something but decides against it. She just nods and walks away, not daring to look back.

She gets back to her grandmother’s and lies down while her grandmother eats. Later that evening, she walks back to her own den and lays down on the dirt floor. She hears her friend Niki come in and she watches as Niki makes her way over to where she is lying and sits next to her. Niki asks,” What’s wrong Autumn? You look sad.” “ I am Niki. Rocket just dumped me with Trevin right next to him like he was trying to show off or something like that. What the heck is his problem? I Don’t even know why he did that. I thought he was better than that. But I was wrong!” Autumn explains the story of what happened. Niki stands up and says” I’m going to go teach that boy a lesson about messing with my best friend!” Autumn watches as she leaves and she stands up and shakes of the dust from her fur.

A month goes by and Autumn keeps hearing things about Rocket and whatnot. She hasn’t talked to him since that horrible time. He didn’t even apologize for his actions. Autumn sighs while in deep thought, looking up in the night sky. She wonders why this even happened…what she cared so much for… was lost. It will never be the same again. Autumn watches the clouds sail through the night sky when she hears a loud gun shot. She jumps up and runs toward the noise. She’s running as fast as her professional sled racing legs would carry her when she hears another gun shot. Her eyes grow wide as she runs and runs, wondering what happened. She enters the area of where the gunshot came from. What she sees lying on the ground almost killed her. What was lying on the ground was to be continued.
