A howl quivered through the morning breeze. The sun peeked over the dusty mountains and shone brightly, the sky turned orangey pink. Mornings mist surrounded those who were watching. Morning birds took to the skies, singing their cheerful calls. Just on the outskirts of Nome, on the sandy beach a stranded ship lay wedged in-between the sand dunes. The sky turned a dull pink which beamed down on the decks.
A brown hybrid stood proudly on the edge and a breeze blew round him.
He took a deep breath then looked at a beautiful red and white husky.
She trotted across the sand and smiled at him.
The hybrid smiled and jumped down, running to her before he skidded to a halt.
“Hi, Jenna” he said and nuzzled her.
“Balto” she whispered and nuzzled him.
“What’s wrong?” he asked and stared at her.
“Rosie was talking about a bear, here in Nome’s village. They say he’s hiding in the small parks and forests” she muttered.
6 puppies raced over to them and barked playfully.
“Heya pups!” Balto greeted and rolled over on his back. They all jumped atop of him barking and wagging their tails furiously.
But 1 pup sat down next to his mother. “M-mum, is there a really bear here?” he muttered.
“No, Jaime my dear” Jenna whispered tenderly and licked his nose.
“I think theirs a bear here” Larka called and sat beside Jenna too.
Konya pounced on Larka. “Theirs no bear! There never has been”
Toska joined in too. “There could be” she muttered.
Lizzie and Dory looked at each other, amusement glowing in their eyes.
“Now now kids, I don’t think there is a bear here either” he whispered.
Konya looked at Larka and stuck her tongue out.
“But! A bear still could come, we must stay safe” Balto whispered looking at everyone.
“But dad, will it eat us?” Dory asked. Her siblings whispered to each other.
“Not if we stay together” Jenna said and smiled.
Larka raised her muzzle. “I’m not afraid of a bear, I could beat him any day” she said proudly, hearing her family chuckle.
Toska grinned and the fur on her back raised. “I’m not afraid either!” she called.
Soon they were all saying their not afraid.
Jaime sighed and looked at his paws.
“Okay pups, time for bed” Balto said, worried that their courage might make them try and find the bear.
A man called Dr, john walked down the street late at night; he was guarding the town from the bear.
But something in the shadows loomed, towering over him. Its cold breath sent shivers down John’s spine. He raised his gun. “Who’s there?” he muttered, he could feel his legs tremble with fear.
A German shepherd growled at his side.
“Good boy, Danny” John muttered.
A black shadow cast over him and something pounced, a scream echoed through the night…
“I saw him get killed myself” Danny whispered and sighed.
“Who by?” Dixie called.
“What happened?” another dog called.
“Tell us Danny!” another dog called.
All the dogs in Nome were in the boiler room, talking about the death of John.
“Ok, we were on guard and a shadow crept over, his big red eyes glared down on us and he just grabbed John by the throat and blood splattered…” Danny collapsed to the floor, tears ran down his face.
“But who killed him!?” Balto demanded.
At this point Danny couldn’t talk very good. “A-a bear!” he muttered and let out more tears.
Balto’s eyes widened and everyone was muttering to each other.
“I gotta get Jenna and our pups! Balto thought and raced out the boiler room.
Jenna was trotting down the street with the six pups trying to catch up with her.
“Oh Jenna!!” Balto called desperately.
“What is it Balto?” She asked with concern.
“A bear, theirs been a murder” he muttered.
“Oh my...” Jenna whispered and looked at their puppies.
