Part One

One day a wolf named White Fur yowled a painful cry.  Her leader, Black Heart, raced into the nursery, panting heavily.  "What's wrong?", he wondered between breaths.  He then noticed three small puppies lying at White Fur's side. "I had puppies," she softly said.  "For a moment, I thought you were dying," he said with relief.  White Fur laughed and pulled back her ears.  "Will you name them?" she asked him.  "Of course," he said with a chuckle.  "I will name them right now, if you wish," he said. "Yes, I do want you to name them now," she whispered.  "All right," he said.  White fur nodded as Black Heart left.  Outside of the nursery, Black Heart announced a meeting at the High Rock.  The wolves gathered around the High Rock, from the smallest puppy to the largest elder. White Fur listened to the names of her puppies being announced.  "The first puppy's name is Bright Paw." White fur silently howled at her daughter's name. "The next puppy's name is Swift Paw, and finally, our last puppy's name is Long Tail."  "Yay!" howled White fur.  "My puppies have names."

A year later, the puppies were now approaching full size and they all were fast.  They all had sapphire blue eyes, just like their mother. One day, Long Tail asked his mother, "Mommy when will we start training?"  White Fur giggled.  "In a few days," she said.  After a few days had passed, the pups would be given to the mentors. Black Heart was already waiting at the High Rock for the puppies.  When they arived, it was time for their mentors to be called.  "The first mentor is for Long Tail," said Black Heart. His mentor is Lion Paw.  Long Tail howled and sniffed at Lion Paw.  The next puppy is Bright Paw. "Her mentor is Sand Paw".  Bright Paw eventually found Sand Paw and sat next to her.  The last puppy is Swift Paw. "Your mentor is White Heart," said Black heart.  Swift Paw pranced towards a white wolf knowing it was White Heart.  "All right," said Black Heart. "Go to the training center and teach your pups."

Once at the training center, the mentors took their pups to the nearest Oak. "Now," said Lion paw, "you must back up a little."  So the pups backed up. "To complete this task you must leap," said White Heart. The pups crouched, then leaped. T he pups landed at their mentor's paws. "Nicely done!" howled Sand Paw. The pups bowed, then followed their mentors back to camp.

Once at camp, Black Heart came up to them and smiled.  "We practiced leaping with them," said Sand Paw sternly. "Great!" said Black Heart.  "Did they pass?"  "Yes," said Lion Paw.  "Very well then," Black Heart said. "Off you go."  White Heart then told the pups that they were almost warriors!  The next day, training started early.  The pups were still asleep when Snow Paw, a young warrior, padded into the nursury. "It's time for training!" he shouted. The pups stirred, then jumped out of their beds.

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" they shouted in surprise. "It's time for training," he repeated. "Oh," said the pups still surprised from his wake up call. The pups then followed Snow Paw to their mentors. "Now," said Snow Paw, "You listen to your mentors and I promise I'll bring you a snack."  They all nodded and followed their mentors into the woods. "Now," said White Heart, "do you know why training was so short last time?"  The pups shook their heads. "Well, it's because we had to go to a gathering."  "Whats a gathering?" asked Swift Paw. "Well, it's kind of like a meeting." said White Heart.

Without noticing, Sand Paw tripped and landed in the frozen river! "Sand Paw!" shouted the pups. Sand Paw struggled to keep his head above water. The water was so cold that Sand Paws fur was turning ice blue! "Help!" cried Sand Paw. Then a ball of fur crashed into Sand Paw! He then noticed that it was Bright Paw! The pup tugged on Sand Paw's scruff and dragged him out of the water. Loud cheers sounded as they ventured home, forgetting all about training.

When they reached the camp, Black Heart rushed over.  "Whats wrong?" he asked.  "Bright Paw saved Sand Paw," said Long Tail.  "Hmmm," said Black Heart,  "I should reward her so...lets make her ruler!"  Everyone cheered for the pup.  "But I'm not a warrior yet," said the pup. "Good point," said Black Heart.  "Well,  I just made you one."  Bright Paw gasped and then trotted towards the High Rock.
