Opening: a large wolf walked into a sled dog pen the owner of the dogs was a man who ran the mail sled dog team for Nome. All of a sudden the man awoke to hear the whining of the dogs, the man got out of bed and walked to the front door where he lit a lantern he pulled open the door. The light of the lantern cast a glow over the white snow, the man walked to where he heard the whining he reeled in horror to what he found.

He found a large black shape standing over one of the dogs, the man held up the lantern to get a better look at it, the creature looked at him with it’s yellow eyes. The man stood frozen to the spot the creature took one last look at him and disappeared in the winter night. The man looked down at the ground where it had once stood he found one of the dogs laying there it was bleeding out of it’s neck. The man bent down and held the dog until he felt it go limp in his arms.

Some days later Balto was walking along a ally way when he spotted a group of dogs standing near a building Balto says “hey guys whats happening” everyone jumped and turned around, one huskey said in a nervous voice “hi b..b..balto” the dog winced when he said Balto. Balto looked at everyone noticing that they were acting funny he says “whats wrong guys” they all replied “nothing honest” they all winced. Balto walked away from the dogs thinking “what was that all about” while Balto was walking he ran into a dog eating out of the garbage the dog sensed someone behind him he turned and was confronted by Balto, the dog was startled he backed up and said “don’t kill me” Balto looked puzzled at the dog and approached him and said “why would I kill you” the dog turned around screaming “he is going to kill me” Balto watched as the dog disappear from view.

Balto walked away and back to his boat all of a sudden his son Kodi came running towards him he stopped panting and trying to catch his breath, once Kodi caught his breath he said “dad it isn’t true is it” balto looked at his son and said “what is” Kodi replied “is it true you tried to kill a dog” Balto replied “no it isn’t” then he replied “why do you ask’ Kodi looked into his fathers eyes and said “there was a terrified dog running up the ally screaming that you had tried to kill him” Balto looked at his son and said “I did nothing but approach him and he started to freak out” Kodi nodded and said “ok dad” Kodi walks away from his father.

The next day Balto awoke to find Jenna staring at him Balto says in a sleepy voice ‘what are you doing here Jen” she looked at him with her brown eyes and said “just came by to see how you were doing” Balto got up and stretched his body his bones cracking as he did so, he looked at her and said “things around here are becoming rather strange” Jenna replied “in what way” Balto replied “the dogs around here are so jumpy when I walk by and one dog yesterday ran screaming from me saying I was going to kill him” Jenna stood there speachless she looked at Balto and replied “yesterday I heard the humans talking one of them said that one of his dogs had been killed during the night he said when he found what did it he saw you” Balto was taken aback by this and replied “I did no such thing” Jenna nods and says “I believe you” Balto and Jenna then walk into Nome.

While Balto and Jenna were in Nome Balto saw a large group of humans standing near a building they were all holding guns, Ballto looked at them and hid behind some barrels Jenna looked at Balto and laughed saying “what are you doing silly” Balto looks at Jenna and says “please be quiet Jen I am trying to see what those humans are saying” Jenna looks from him to the large group of humans, Jenna looked at them then walked over to Balto and hid with him to hear what they were saying. Balto listened to what the humans had to say one of them said “are you sure he did it” another said “yes I am sure” one human said in a rather angry voice “lets kill Balto lets kill him now before he kills anymore of the dogs and before he kills a child” as Balto heard this his heartbeat sped up he staggered from where he and Jenna were hiding out into the open.

One of the humans saw him and pointed and said “there he is” then all of a sudden the other humans turned around and looked at Balto he stared right back at them, they start to run at him Balto turns around and runs away from them. Balto runs into a bucket of red paint that someone had left out so they could paint there house, Baltos face and paws were covered in red paint he continued to run until he ran into a dead end in the ally way which was a high fence he heard the humans right behind him he turned and faced them they looked at the red paint and said “look he has blood on him no wonder we found him all we had to do was follow the blood paw prints” One of the humans said lets get this over with he raised his gun and fired, Balto closed his eyes and waited for the bullet to strike him and it would all be over but he felt no pain or anything he opened his eyes to find his son Kodi laying on the ground bleeding out of his chest.

Balto rushes up to Kodi and looks at him and says “why Kodi” Kodi looked at him and replied “because I love you and your innocent” Balto lifted up one of his paws and pressed it against his sons chest, he could feel his sons heart beating fast he looked at his son Kodi looked back Balto lifted his paw off of Kodis chest and looked at him Kodi replied “dad I am cold” all of a sudden Kodi closed his eyes and lay still. Balto looked at Kodi with fear in his eyes and said “Kodi… Kodi don’t go” Kodi gave no response, the humans watched as Balto stood over Kodi and said “well it was his fault” they looked at each other and raised their guns and pointed them at Balto and fired Balto ran through a hole in the fence and continued to run all the way back to his home.

Balto as soon as he reached his boat he was conforted by Jenna who looked at him and said in a worried voice “what happened Balto I tried to keep up with the humans but lost them in the ally way” Balto replied “they chased me into a dead end they say that I had red paint on my paws and face and thought it was blood one of the humans fired at me and I thought I was going to die but I didn’t I opened my eyes to find Kodi laying on the ground infront of me bleeding he had jumped in the way he died there in the ally I escaped through a hole in the fence” Jenna stood there taken aback what she just heard and burst out crying saying “my son is dead” Balto walks over to her and trys to comfort her she replies “what are you going to do Balto” he replies “I have to leave Nome so I will be safe” she backed away from him and say “I will go with you” Balto says “Jenna I cannot ask you to do that you have a family here” she replied back “you are my family” Balto nods and they both walk out of the boat and into the unknown.
