“Amaroq

(Note: I am going to tell both points of view for Aniu and Amaroq from the night they first met, so don’t get confused ^^)

This is very vaguely based on the book The Covenant by Beverly Lewis.

“Amaroq! Do you have to eat all of the food!?!” a red and white husky asked.

“No Jake, not all the food, I’ll leave this little piece for you,” joked a tan husky. He left the food bowl and lay down beside the boiler watching the others eat. He loved his life, he always had something to eat and a warm place to sleep, but some part of him longed to be wild. He heard a wolf howl and closed his eyes imagining what it’d be like to be free. He dared not tell anyone, for they would disgrace him. Wolves were looked down upon in the husky society.

Just then, his thoughts were interrupted by Jake, “That was a good run today, wasn’t it buddy?” Amaroq quickly erased the thought from his head, why was he thinking like that any way? He knew that wolves were vicious creatures.... or, that’s what everyone told him. He then remembered that Jake had asked him a question, “Oh, yeah... yeah it was.”

Jake sat down beside him, “Yeah, and I saw someone who’s been eyeing you lately...” he nudged Amaroq in the shoulder,

Amaroq smiled and got excited, “Really? Who?”

“Ami,” Jake replied. Amaroq smiled, she was pretty, her black fur was so sleek and shiny.

“No...” he denied “Really?” Jake nodded and smiled. Amaroq smiled back, he always got his lady, but this one was different. He’d liked her since he was a pup. He smiled and fell fast asleep by the warmth of the boiler.

The old grandfather clock in the parlor struck twelve o’clock when Amaroq was woken by a howl. It was very close. He looked out the window into the forest surrounding the house, among the trees was the whitest wolf he’d ever seen in his life. He got very excited and shook from his head to the tip of his tail. The wolf seemed to be calling for him, he got up. As he ran to the door he heard something, he stopped in his tracks and looking around discovered that it was just Jake snoring. He blew a sigh of relief and unhinged the door, pushing it into the snow so it muffled the sound of falling. He started running toward the forest.

“Aniu, Aniu wake up!” whispered a gray wolf with a worried look on his face. The white wolf slowly opened her amber eyes.

“What, what is it Papa?” she asked, sounding like a pup. Her father looked at her with caring, yellow eyes, “You were having that dream again,” he said. Aniu looked at her father, she really loved that he cared for her so much.

“Dad, you know I’m old enough to take care of myself.” She said “But, thanks anyway,” she smiled and licked him on the cheek. “Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m going to get a drink,” She said and walked out of the cave.

The truth was that she was going to look at a house, with a very handsome husky living in it. He seemed different than the others, like he was wild. Like he was longing to be free, she wanted to meet him badly and decided tonight would be the night. But could she do it? She had always been a shy wolf and could barely speak to her own mother, let alone a cousin. No, tonight she was going to meet him.

Reaching the house around the time the moon was brightest she let out a beautiful howl, calling for the husky. She saw the door fall into the snow and a tan husky run out of it. He was running toward her. She suddenly got nervous; maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. What if he hurt her, what if he didn’t like her. She turned and ran, not knowing that the dog had followed.

Amaroq saw that the wolf was running away. That’s strange, he thought, Maybe I should follow her. He barked and ran after the wolf. Finally, he caught up with her and barked again, “Wait! What’s the matter? Aren’t you going to talk to me?” he asked.

The wolf stopped and looked at him; she had the most beautiful amber eyes. She just stared, her eyes bewitching Amaroq. He finally snapped out of it. He was getting impatient, “Okay, maybe following you was a mistake,” he said and started to walk off.

Aniu wanted to talk to him, she finally managed to speak “Wait, I... I just wanted to meet you, you seemed different from the others, like you were wild.” She sat down. Amaroq stopped and turned around. The wolf was so beautiful, her shiny white fur matched the snow perfectly and her eyes, oh her eyes, they were the richest amber he’d ever seen. “Well, I always have wondered what it’d be like to be a wolf. How about you show me,” he smiled flirtingly. Aniu studied him, he was a very handsome husky, she didn’t see why her pack despised them so much. “I guess I could show you,” she said and bounded off motioning for him to follow.

Aniu looked at the rising sun, “It’s beautiful isn’t it?” she asked.

“Yeah, beautiful,” said Amaroq looking at her. Suddenly it dawned on him. He had to be back to make deliveries. “Um... Aniu,” he said.

“What is it Amaroq?” she asked.

“I have to be going now,” he said, “But I’ll see you tonight. Won’t I?” She smiled “Yeah,” and they both bounded off.

The dogs were still asleep when Amaroq got back. He blew a sigh of relief as he put the door back on its hinges. He just lay down to fall back asleep when Ben came in to feed them breakfast. He sighed, yawned, and got up. He slowly padded over to the food bowl. He ate his fill and ran to the sled, ready to be hooked up. He couldn’t wait ‘til tonight, he wanted to make the deliveries as fast as he could so he’d have more time to spend with Aniu. Jake was the second to come outside, “What are you so excited for?” he asked Amaroq stopped wagging his tail. “Oh, uh... nothing?!?” Jake looked at him suspiciously, Amaroq was acting like a puppy.

Amaroq watched Ben harness up the rest of the team. Ben got the supplies onto the sled and yelled “Mush!” Amaroq pulled on the harness and ran as fast as he could, practically dragging the rest of the team behind him.

By the time they got done with the deliveries it was six o’clock. Ben looked at the team “Wow! You guys really worked hard today!” he said as he unhitched the sled, oblivious to the fact that Amaroq had absolutely killed the rest of the team. Free from the harness, Amaroq ran inside and ate his fill. He then took his place by the heater and fell fast asleep. He was woken by the beautiful howl of Aniu. He snuck out again and ran to her. They again, were together until sun up. This pattern repeated for quite some time.

Aniu got home later than usual one morning. He father asked where she was, she simply replied “I.. I woke up early and decided to look around the forest,” she walked away, smiling.

When Aniu had walked away, a brown wolf stood beside Aniu’s father and said “I don’t like the looks of this Kato,” Her father replied “I know darling, I know.”

One night, Amaroq was woken by a howl that sounded distressed and hurt. He quickly ran out the door and went to Aniu. “What’s wrong my love?” Aniu looked at him with watery eyes, “I... I’m pregnant.” With that, Amaroq fell back into the snow and whimpered too. He didn’t know what to say, or do for that matter. He looked up at Aniu; maybe it would be best if I just kept away from her he thought. No, I know how it feels not to have a father. His own father had walked out on his mother like he was about to do to Aniu. He had to stay with her a take care of her.

Amaroq got up, “Um... well...” he was speechless “I... you... maybe we could still see each other and see how the pups are doing.” Aniu looked up

“You mean, you won’t leave me?” Amaroq nodded his head and smiled. Aniu smiled back, she got up and wiped her tears on her paw.

“Well, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said. Amaroq smiled and got up, walking back to the house.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few weeks passed and Aniu’s stomach was getting large, she couldn’t hide it anymore. Her mother and father were getting suspicious. She finally had to tell them, her father looked at her pitifully. She knew what the wolves do to pups and mothers like that. Her father was protecting her; her mother on the other hand was very angry and shunned Aniu. The rest of the pack did the same, her father tried desperately to have one of them talk to her or smile at her. It was no use; she was being pushed out of the pack.

She ran, she felt the pups getting heavy. She dropped to the ground, panting. She howled for Amaroq.

Amaroq was sleeping in the boiler room when he heard a distressed call from Aniu. “Aniu,” he whispered. Jake raised his head “What? Did you say something?” he asked Amaroq.

“No, just go back to sleep,” he whispered as he tiptoed out the door. He heard her howl again. He ran towards the sound, he made an attempt to howl back. It was a very doggish howl but it
