Husky Tale
.
A beautiful red and white husky trotted along the streets of Nome. (She looks like Jenna). Her orange bandanna around her neck. The sun lightly beamed down making her glossy coat shine. Her head was held high and her curly tail was raised. Her light fluffy steps made little elegant paw prints marked the snow.
She walked through the streets and stopped outside the butchers shop and barked.
A fat man with curly brown hair chuckled when he saw her. “Hello Rebecca!” he said and placed his hand on her head and slid it down her back.
Rebecca barked and wagged her tail licking her lips.
“Oh I know what you want!” he chuckled. “You want a bone!” he continued. “Wait there” he ran inside his meat shop and took out a bone from the cupboard. “Catch!” he called and threw it out. Rebecca barked and caught it in her jaws proudly.
She trotted off with the bone in her mouth.
But something in the shadows was watching her every move. He slipped away and followed her. Rebecca lay down in a local park and chewed at her bone.
The thing in the shadows walked beside her. “Umm hi” he said.
Rebecca looked up and saw a young red and white husky. He was all red with a white muzzle and a colour around his neck. “Hi” Rebecca whispered politely.
The dog looked around for something to say but he couldn’t think of anything so he walked away rather embarrassed.
Rebecca chuckled. “What’s your name, sir?” she called.
The dog stopped in his tracks and turned to face her. “I’m Sam!” he said proudly. “And yourself?”
“I’m Rebecca” she said and grinned.
Sam nodded his head and smiled. “Where you from, Rebecca?”
“SimpleCreston--”
“The posh place?” he interrupted.
Rebecca nodded.
“I live on the streets” Sam said shamefully.
Rebecca seemed shocked and she stood up. She nudged the bone over to him and smiled. Sam grinned and began to eat the bone. “Thanks!”
Rebecca smiled and sat back down.
“I wish I was on the streets” Rebecca said suddenly.
“What? Why?”
“To be free and do what ever you want!”
Sam looked at her as if she was a ghost. A little amusement glistened in his eyes.
Rebecca yawned and stood up. “It’s late, I better be going home” she said and began to walk away.
“Bye…” Sam called.
Rebecca smiled to herself. “Bye”
Rebecca waited until the big white gates surrounding her owner’s home opened.
She then walked into a huge garden full of water fetchers and flowers.
She walked through a doggy flap and barked.
A tall skinny woman with blonde hair and a pointy nose ran over to her. “Hello my widdiw moochy moo goo goo liddiw woofy” Agnes said through pursed lips.
Rebecca wagged her tail politely as she watched her embarrassing owner pampered her with unknown pet words.
It was late and Rebecca slept in a basket at the bottom of her owner’s bed. Rebecca was thinking about Sam and how much she actually liked him. But Agnes would never allow her to be mates with a street dog. All these thoughts were running through her mind that night and she didn’t get to sleep until morning.
The sun had raised and the birds sang that cheerful morning. Rebecca opened her sleepy eyes and stretched. She wagged her tail as Agnes patted her head and sat down heavily on the bed. Rebecca knew something was wrong. She put her head on Agnes’s lap and whined.
“Oh, Rebecca, I got awful news… we are going to be kicked out of this house because I didn’t pay the rent for a few months!”
Rebecca tilted her head as if she understood.
“We will live on the streets and sleep in trash cans and eat… rotten fish!” she muttered. Tears began to slip down her milky white cheeks.
Rebecca whined again and licked Agnes’s hand.
“We will have to move out in a few months” she sobbed and rapped her boney arms around Rebecca’s neck. Rebecca struggled and broke free of her grip and trotted down stairs and out the front door.
She walked out and into the streets when she saw the red husky with the white muzzle
On the other side of the road.
“Sam?” she called.
The husky looked at her and grinned.
“What you doing here?” she asked.
Sam padded over to her. “I came looking for you”
Rebecca leaned her head on his shoulder. “Me and my owner, I can tell something bad is going to happen to us, something about being on the streets!” she sobbed.
“How do you know?” Sam asked enjoying the company he was getting.
“She told me, but I didn’t understand most of the things she said” she muttered.
“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you both” Sam whispered and winked.
Sam was a bit bigger than Rebecca and stronger, which made her feel safe in his company. She felt a small smile appear across her muzzle.
Sam’s face began to turn red as he remembered Rebecca the beautiful dog was leaning on his shoulder.
Rebecca remembered too and she moved away from him a bit.
Now they both knew that they fancied each other.
A few months had passed and they were mates.
Rebecca walked over to Agnes and whined.
“What’s wrong, girl?” she asked with concern. She noticed Rebecca’s swollen belly and her eyes widened. “Oh my…” soon Rebecca was at the vets.
Agnes waited outside the operation room anxiously. “I wonder who the farther is… he could be a mutt or a different breed or worse… a mangy street dog with flees and germs” Agnes muttered quietly to herself. “No! Rebecca has better tastes; she wouldn’t go for a dog like that!” Agnes dismissed the thoughts from her mind.
Soon a vet with dark skin and pale blue uniform came out. Her white gloves were covered in blood and she took her face mask off her mouth. “She’s gave birth to 3 healthy young pups!” she said with a friendly smile.
“Can- can I go and see her?” Agnes asked fiddling with her hand bag.
“Yes, she’s very exhorted and tired but I think she’s okay” the vet said cheerfully.
Agnes opened the door and walked through to see the red and white husky laying on a blue table with a white cloth beneath her.
2 pups were suckling laying close to her chest. “Where’s the other one?”
“The vet said there were 3 puppies.” Agnes panicked.
Soon a vet entered with a small pup in his hands. “This one needed to be cleaned, he was covered in blood” the vet said half-jokingly. He placed the pup beside Rebecca and he began to suckle with his brothers and sisters. The vet stroked Rebecca’s head with one hand and he shook Agnes’s hand with his other. “Congratulations” he said happily.
“We will have to keep Rebecca here over night, in case something troubles her.” The vet whispered.
Agnes shook her head. “Good girl my widdiw Rebeccy wecky!” she muttered.
The vet grinned with amusement in his smile.
Soon Agnes left Rebecca in peace and it began to get late.
The next day Agnes didn’t return. In fact, it passed a week and their was still no sign.
Rebecca whined and whimpered for her owner. She had a strange new feeling and she wanted to be with her owner.
Two vets stood beside her. “Where’s Agnes?” he asked with anger in his tone
“I don’t know, but it’s passed a freaking week!” said a woman vet.
“You know, people do abandon their dogs when they had puppies, because they don’t want to look after them, or it’s an unexpected birth or they can’t afford them…”
The vets looked at one another. “She must of left her…” the vet concluded sadly.
The other vet nodded his head coldly. “What are we gonna do with her?” she asked and looked at the depressed dog, laying sadly with her pups in a cadge.
“The pound…” they both said together.
The vet switched the light off and walked out, shutting the door behind him.
Rebecca was so scared for her and her pups; she missed Agnes and Sam so much.
But Agnes would never ever leave her. She loved her too much.
Rebecca snarled and pushed open the cadge door. She picked a pup up and jumped down. She looked at a small open window. She ran and jumped through and landed outside. She placed her pup on the grass. “Don’t move dear” she whispered and jumped back in. one by one she took her pups out the window. She couldn’t carry them all home… “What am I gonna do…” she muttered. She threw back her head and cried a howl; as loud as she could it was very un-husky-like.
Sam wondered through the streets wondering were Rebecca was. A howl echoed through the air and Sam perked his ears up. “Rebecca” he said immediately. He ran to where the sound had came from.
Rebecca sighed and lay down freezing. Her pups were cuddling beside each other trying to keep warm. “Don’t worry my little ones, we’ll get home soon” she said. Her breath turned to steam and snow fell from the heavens catching on to her fur.
“Rebecca!” Sam called and dashed over the hill towards her.
Rebecca stood up and barked wagging her tail. “Sam!”
Sam ran over to her and nuzzled her, licking her muzzle. He then stopped and looked at the 3 tiny pups
