The dog who was dead
Chapter 1: blessed
Balto yawned and stood up. He walked to the edge of his boat and looked around.
“Hey Boris, the puppies are expected today, I gotta see Jenna!”
Boris walked over to Balto. “I’m an uncle?” Boris asked.
“Ha we’ll find out when we get there!” Balto yelled and ran down the ramp and across the beach.
Boris followed until they got to the totem pole. Balto grinned and ran into the village.
He skidded to a halt outside the barn. He peered in.
Jenna lay there in some hay. Six beautiful puppies laying against her.
“Come in Balto…” She said softly.
Balto swallowed hard and walked in. he stood by Jenna and looked at his little family.
He looked and saw a small pup. Smaller than everyone else. Balto smiled and licked the pup’s back.
“He’s a runt” Balto said.
“Be quiet I don’t want him feeling… different” Jenna said firmly.
Balto nodded slowly. “We’ll treat him the same as the others”
Jenna nodded in agreement.
“What we going to call him?” Asked Balto.
Jenna shrugged.
“What about… Chester?” balto suggested and nuzzled her.
Jenna nodded and wagged her tail. “Yeah, I like that name!” she said and nuzzled him back.
Chapter 2: growing up
7 weeks later…
“C’mon kids hurry up!” Balto called and laughed as all the pups tackled him.
Aleu bit his ear playfully.
Balto stood up laughing. “Where’s your brother?”
“Here I am!” Chester replied as he ran up the beach.
“Your so small, you can’t even run” one of the pups said.
Balto frowned. “Apologize to your brother Kodi!”
Kodi sighed. “Sorry…” he said before tackling his sister Saba.
Chester walked and sat next to Balto.
“Hey, son don’t listen to him”
“Papa, why did he say I am small?”
Balto looked around for something to say. “He’s just jealous because… you’re a bit smaller than him” He said and winked.
Chester grinned at his farther before running away to play with his brothers and sisters.
Jenna padded over to Balto and sat beside him. “You ok?” she said as she nuzzled him.
Balto sighed. “I-I don’t like keeping secrets from Chester… but if I tell him he’s a runt. He might hate us or run away…”
Jenna sighed also. “He will find out soon you know… so it’s best if he hears it from you”
Balto nodded. “I guess your right… I’ll tell him tonight. Before he goes to sleep, that way he can sleep on it and be okay in the morning” balto said and nuzzled Jenna.
The puppies where still playing on the beach.
Saba walked in the sea. “Don’t go out too far Saba!” balto called.
Aleu jumped on a log and howled. “Honey, please don’t howl like that” Jenna said.
Dingo, Kodi and Kally ran down the beach. “Hey come back!” Balto called and ran after them.
Jenna chuckled and sat next to Boris. “Good morning Jenna. Vhat is going on today?”
“Hi, where just having fun on the beach. Before our puppies get sold.
“So soon?” he asked
“Yeah. I haven’t even told Balto yet… he’ll be so upset letting them go” Jenna whispered.
Boris nodded. “Hi Uncle Boris!” Chester said and ran over to him,
“Vhy, hello youngin’ you’re a handsome young pup now aren’t ya?” Boris said and grinned.
Chester wagged his tail and smiled before dashing off.
“Why hello there Jenna” Steele said and walked beside her.
“Urgh, Hi Steele” Jenna grunted.
“So where’s that wolf dog?”
“Playing with our puppies”
Steele nodded slowly and licked his lips.
“Now if you don’t mind I better see to my mate and my family. Coming Boris?” Jenna said and walked away with her head held high. “Vait for me!” Boris called and followed her.
Steele snarled. “You’ll be mine someday dog” he mumbled to himself.
Chapter 3: an untold secret
Jenna ran over to Balto and nuzzled him. “You told Chester yet?”
Balto shook his head. “Chester, will you come here?” he called.
Chester stopped playing and padded towards his farther.
“Yes papa?”
“Come with me…” Balto said and led him away.
He walked up the ramp then into his boat and he sat down.
Chester sat down too and looked at him in worry.
“You know that your mother and I love you very much”
Chester nodded.
“Well… when you where born you where actually born…. A runt.
Chester tilted his head. “What’s that?”
“You… are smaller and weaker than everyone else…”
Chester looked at the floor upset. “Why didn’t you tell me ages ago?”
Balto shrugged. “There’s also something else I’m going to tell you”
Chester looked at him.
“You and your brothers and sisters… are part wolf” balto declared.
“But we can’t be, mom is a husky.”
“Yeah well I’m part wolf. My mother was a husky who had pups with a wolf”
Chester looked at the floor again; lost for words.
“I’m gonna see mom…” Chester said and ran out of the boat.
“Chester!! Chester come back!!” balto called.
But he ignored his calls and carried on running. Balto sighed and lay down.
Chapter 4: Ran-away
He ran and sat on a hill. The moon shone behind him making his red and cream coloured coat glow.
He sighed and his breath turned into steam.
He stood up and looked around.
“Chester!!” Aleu called and raced towards him.
Chester lowered his head and looked at his older sister.
“Why are you here? Mom and papa have been looking everywhere for you!”
“Well I’m a runt! Why did you never tell me?”
“Cause it’s not that bad”
Chester shook his head.
“Your not that smaller than everyone you know”
“That’s not the problem; nobody likes puppies that are different.”
“I like you” Aleu said and smiled.
Chester rested his head on her shoulder and sighed.
Chapter 5: Finding Chester
Jenna ran over to Balto, “have you found him?”
Balto sighed and shook his head. He sniffed at the ground. “Wait! Jenna, I have his scent!”
Jenna perked up her ears and wagged her tail “Find our son” she said and nuzzled him.
Balto nodded and raced away following his son’s scent.
He skidded and almost fell into a fast river. He grunted and looked away looking for a way across.
“Chester!!” he called.
Chester perked his ears and ran. He looked at Balto on the other side of the river. His paws where on the edge of the river bank. He slipped on the mud and fell in. “No!” the current took him down stream.
“I’m coming, Chester!” Balto called and jumped in the river. Aleu ran to the scene. “Papa!” she called
“Go, get your, mother” Balto called in-between breaths.
Aleu nodded and ran away.
Balto swam towards him and grabbed the scruff of his neck. “Gotcha!” Balto called.
Chester whined and looked at his farther.
The current pushed them further down stream until they came to a drop at the waterfall.
Balto grabbed onto a rock. “Hold on!” he called.
Chester sighed and looked around. “You can’t hold me and save yourself to dad”
“Y-yes I can!” Balto rejected but he felt himself slipping of the rock.
Chester sighed again and kicked Balto’s face which made him let go.
“No!!!!” Balto called as he watched his son fall down the waterfall.
He jumped off the rock and landed on the land. He looked up and Jenna was looking down at him.
“Where’s Chester?” She asked in a worried tone as she noticed tears down Balto’s face.
Balto shook his head and ran down the hill to the bottom of the fall.
He ran through the shallow water and looked around. “Chester!!!!” he shouted as loud as he could.
Jenna and Aleu ran next to Balto; tears streamed down their face...
Chapter 6: was it worth it?
Jenna buried her face in Balto’s fur crying. Aleu say beside her parents. Her eyes blurred with tears.
Balto shook his head slowly; still stunned of what happened. “Let’s go…” Balto said and walked away. Jenna and Aleu sighed before walking after him.
They sat down in the boiler room where the fire was lit. Kodi, Kirby, Dusty, Ralph and a few other dogs where already there.
Kodi got up and ran towards Jenna. “Mom? Mom are you okay?” he asked.
Jenna looked at him. Tears still streaming down her face.
He then looked at Balto. “Dad what happened?”
“It’s your brother… Chester….” Balto started.
Kodi perked up his ears and widened his eyes.
“He… H-he’s dead…” Balto finished as tears filled his eyes.
Kodi shook his head before running out of the boiler room. Dusty sighed before running after him.
Soon most of Nome had heard the terrible news.
