CHAPTER ONE
“I don’t believe it” said a man
“He will kill all our stock” said another.
“And what about our children?” He will snatch them during the night.” Said a woman as she fiddled with her fingers nervously.
“Ok people calm down” said the bar maid as she came through with 2 grey mugs of beer. She placed them on the counter and then ran her fingers through her curly brown hair. “I don’t want any of you talking about the wolf when Jack’s here ok?” she continued as she looked at everyone. The people in the bar nodded slowly.
The door to the pub pushed open and silence fell among the room, there stood a man his long brown coat tucked into his big black belt, his brown hat shading his eyes. He came in and his muddy brown boots clumped against the wooden floor. Walking beside the man was a big black dog with a silver collar around her neck she wagged her tail slowly, keeping up with her masters pace.
Everyone watched silently as he rested his arms on the bar counter.
”Yes dear what can I get ya” said the cheerful voice of the bar maid.
“Beer” he replied as the bar maid hurried off to get him one.
The man was called Jack, he lived in a small cottage on the other side of town, he’s new to the village, and he travels all round the world so he doesn’t really have a home.
The bar maid hurried back with a big grey mug with froth overflowing and she placed it in front of Jack with a grin.
Jack shoved his hand in his pocket and slowly threw some silver coins on the counter.
“Thank you sir” said the bar maid as she picked up the coins and hurried away.
Jack turned around and everyone started talking again.
“I say he needs shooting” said a man.
“Yeah before he breeds” said another.
“I bet this place will be swarming with wolves!” said a man as he banged his fist on the table and stormed out the bar.
The word “wolf” circled Jack’s brain. “Wolves?” asked Jack. “Everyone knows wolves were all killed hundreds of years ago and now extinct” Jack continued.
The other people looked at one another and whispered to each other.
Jack laughed at the thought of wolves and drank his beer and walked out “Toya come!” he called over his shoulder to the black dog.
Toya padded after him wagging her tail.
Jack sat down on a bench outside and placed a cigarette in his mouth as his eyes scanned the town. He looked at the old fashioned pub which is called the black horse
Toya whined and nudged Jack’s leg. Jack just looked at her with no expression across his face, as smoke blew around him.
Toya lay down and rested her head on her paws and grunted.
Later that evening Jack and Toya walked home, when they got there Jack went to his hut and pulled out a gun that was on a hook at the back.
Jack was infact a hunter!
He and Toya walked a few miles to a big field surrounded by trees and a silver lake running through.
Jack stood at the top of a hill and looked around. He closed one eye and aimed through his gun and pulled the trigger. BANG! The shot echoed through the field.
Jack then nodded in the direction the shot went and Toya raced down the hill and into the thicket. Shortly after, she padded up the hill with a blackbird in her jaws. She placed it neatly at her master’s feet and wagged her tail proudly.
There’s nothing worth killing here Jack thought to himself.
Toya perked up her ears and growled under her breath before she raced down the hill heading towards the thicket.
“Toya! Toya get back here now!” called Jack, but Toya ignored her master’s calls and carried on running until out of sight.
She was sniffing the air and barking as she ran, until she saw a big dog in front of her. She skidded to a halt and stared at the creature before her.
The dog’s amber eyes returned her stare and swished his tail. His silver and copper colour coat shined in the light. His big padded paws spread out as he stood there looking at Toya.
Toya walked closer to him and sniffed at him.
The dog sniffed at Toya and they both wagged their tails.
“Toya!” Jack called again Toya turned round and saw her master running towards her.
She then turned back around to face the dog but he was gone.
Toya started barking and sniffing the ground were the dog once been.
Jack caught up with her “stupid dog” He whispered to Toya and raised his hand making her flinch and back away.
Jack then stopped and went on his knees looking at the ground closely. “What?” he whispered as he stared at a big paw print in the earth. He ran his fingers through it then looked at Toya.
Toya looked at him and gave him a curious glare.
Jack then stood up and walked over to a fence. There, caught on a piece of barbwire was a piece of grey fur blowing in the wind.
Jack picked it off and ran it under his nose smelling at it then knelt down for Toya to sniff it. “Wolf” said Jack in excitement.
The hunt is on!
Jack looked around with Toya circling the fields. The sky is dull and grey and very cold.
Jack followed close behind Toya, hoping his dog will track that wolf down. They searched for hours and no wolf in sight. Jack sat down on the muddy field and placed his gun in front of him.
He knew he wasn’t going to find that wolf yet. He was to fast and cunning and Jack never hunted a wolf before.
He was used to be in fields hunting all the rare exotic animals that were stuffed and mounted in his hut.
Toya was the best hunting dog around she would never betray him. He trusted her but even with a great hunting dog, it will still be hard to track down a wolf.
The wolf padded through a meadow his tail sticking up from the long grass then he got to a farm. He squeezed under a wire fence and looked around. He walked through and looked at the wandering chickens walking around the chicken coop. he licked his lips and crouched down low.
The farmer looked out of his window and looked at the wolf. “That blastin’ wolf is after my chickens!” he shouted and ran out side with his gun. The wolf stood there with a chicken in his mouth and looked at the farmer sheepishly. “That’s it your gonna get it!” shouted the farmer, his face red with fusion.
He aimed his gun at the wolf. BANG! The wolf yelped in pain. Only his paw was shot. The wolf licked his bleeding paw. “Darn I missed” said the farmer as he reloaded his gun. The wolf growled and leaped on the farmer snarling, the farmer hit off the floor and looked at the wolf. Their faces almost touching. “Tess help me!” he shouted as a border collie came padding out the house and looked at them. “Get him girl!” pleaded the farmer.
Tess jumped on the wolf and pinned him down snarling. The wolf growled and sunk his teeth into her neck and thrown her off him. Tess skidded on the floor leaving a trail of blood. As the wolf picked up the chicken again and jumped over the fence and into the thicket.
The farmer cursed and crawled beside Tess.
The wolf limped into a little forest and lay down panting, then started to rip the chicken apart.
After his meal he walked down to the river and on the other side was Jack in his tent with Toya sleeping outside.
It was getting late and Jack was asleep. The wolf crept around the tent sniffing around. Toya opened her eyes and jumped up looking at the wolf. The wolf’s ears folded and he backed away hoping she wouldn’t bark and wake Jack.
She tried to get closer to the wolf but she was tied to a rope outside the tent.
The wolf grunted and walked away.
Toya whined and lay down as she watched the wolf disappear in the fog.
Early next morning the sky shone a pinky orange glow and the sun spread its morning glaze. The air was still and warm and everything felt clearer.
Jack was already awake eating some beans he cooked on the camp fire. Toya walked to her master and sat beside him hoping she can have something to eat. Jack smirked and ripped a piece of bread for her and passed it to her. She ate the bread and licked Jack’s hand.
“Time to go girl” Jack shouted and un-tied her from the rope. “I can tell, were gonna bring that wolf home won’t we girl?” He whispered. Toya barked with excitement she enjoys going hunting with her master. She gets praised for it.
Toya padded and barked at the tracks the wolf left last night. “what ya found there girl?” Jack said as he knelt down beside her and looked at the paw prints. “He was here last night?” He whispered “ach we must have missed him!” he continued. Toya whined and sniffed at the tracks. “Track him down girl!” He encouraged.
Toya lead Jack through meadows to forests for hours until they found the wolf on a beach. “ho ho there he is look!” Whispered Jack as he crouched down. “what a prize!”
The wolf was standing in the sea as the waves crashed against his paws. Jack noted that the wolf’s paw was bleeding. The wolf limped out the sea and lay down in the sand. Jack smirked and loaded his gun aiming at the wolf. Toya growled and ran out her hiding place. “No!” shouted the hunter. Toya pounced in the air and landed inches away from the wolf. The wolf growled at her showing his fangs.
Toya snarled which made the wolf angry and he tackled her biting onto her scruff.
She yelped in shock and she bite the wolf’s neck.
Jack ran out calling Toya’s name but he couldn’t go to close or he could
