Legends Never Go
March 1933. Nome, Alaska. In a cabin, Balto lay beside a fire along with Jenna. Balto appears to be very tired, but that is not the case.
"Balto! Come here boy!" says Rosy's dad. Balto looks up at the man and doesn't get up. He turned his head and laid it back down on the floor. Another man appears next to the cabin owner.
"He seems to have lost his spunk" said the man.
"He's old. I fear he's about ready to go. He is 11 years old after all." said Rosy's dad in a sad way. Jenna sits up and gazes down at the seemingly tired Balto. She gets up and walks outside.
"I believe that when he does, this whole town won't be happy again for some time." Rosy's dad wipes tears away from his eyes. Jenna turns into a nearby alley to talk to Boris.
"Oh! Jenna! How are you? How's Balto?"
"I'm fine but Balto doesn't seem to be so well." Jenna looks at the ground. Boris looks and sees her crying.
"What do you mean not so well?" Boris became concerned.
"I overheard the men talking about how he is probably going to go soon." Jenna's eyes were now full of tears.
"Well, he'll be back before you know it." Boris did not understand what Jenna said.
"No. I mean he's going to die soon." Jenna said crying.
"Oh." Boris looked a Jenna. "Balto, is very strong. He'll be around for many more years." Boris seemed to be very optimistic about it.
"Well, he might. Yeah! He will." Jenna's mood lightened up quite a lot."See you around Boris."
"Wish him well for me!" Boris yelled to Jenna as she left. Jenna truned around and nodded.
Jenna turned around and headed back for the cabin. When she returned she, laid down next to Balto and looked at him.
"So. What did Boris have to say?." Balto managed to say something.
"He wishes you well." Jenna said softly.
"Did you tell him what you heard from the men?" Balto smiled at her.
"Yes. He said you would be around for many more years." Jenna looked at Balto with a concerned look.
"That's true, but I won't be here for much longer. At least in a physical sense." Balto Looked at Jenna.
"What do you mean?" Jenna became confused.
"I'll be around forever in everyone's hearts. They'll never forget what I did for this town." Balto seemed to be tired.
"They would need to be crazy to forget what you did." Jenna told Balto.
"I know. Jenna, Can I tell you a story?" Balto asked Jenna.
"Yeah, sure." Jenna laid her head down.
"The first time I saw you, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. You shunned me whenever I tried to talk to you. But when I saw that Rosy was sick and you were upset, I said I must do this for Rosy and the rest of the kids. And most of all, for you. That's when I set out to try to find the other team. But you saw me and wanted to come too. When you had to be brought back here, I knew that I had to find the team and get the medicine back. After I found the team and we started to head home, all I did was think of Rosy and you. When we got back and I saw you, I realized that...I..." Balto stopped suddenly. Jenna turned her head to Balto.
"That you what?" Jenna asked.
"That....I love you" Balto looked at Jenna. Jenna began to cry a little.
"I love you too Balto." Jenna nuzzled Balto's head and tears began to fall from her eyes.
The next morning, Jenna awoke and she noticed Balto was still asleep. She nudged his neck to try to wake him, but he didn't. She quickly ran to Rosy's room and jumped on Rosy's bed to try to wake her.
"What is it Jenna?" Rosy noticed Jenna looked scared. Rosy got up and followed Rosy to where Balto was. "Is there something wrong with Balto?" She looked at him and notcied he wasn't breathing. "He's not breathing." Rosy wispered to herself. She left the room to get her dad. When they returned, the looked at Jenna and noticed she was scared. Rosy's dad put his ear to Balto's ribcage. He began to cry lightly.
"Rosy, go to the telegrapher and tell him Balto has finnally passed." He got up and his eyes were full of tears. Jenna ran ouside crying heavily and she ran into the alley in which Boris stayed.
"Jenna, what's wrong" Boris asked her.
"Balto is gone." Jenna kept crying.
"Oh! No!" Boris began to cry and hugged Jenna around her neck.
Later that day, The mayor of the town asked for everyone to come to the town hall for the news. When he announced that Balto had passed, everyone gasped and looked at the mayor in disbelief.
"When did he pass?" a man asked.
"Sometime last night or this morning? He didn't wake up from his sleep." The mayor said. "We will have a rememberence ceremony on Monday for Balto." The mayor walked away from the stand teary-eyed. Jenna and Boris were watching through a window as the mayor spoke.
"The last thing he said to me was that he loved me, and the last thing I said to him was that I loved him too." Jenna began to cry again.
"At least he told you before he went." Boris looked at Jenna.
"Yeah, but it was the only time we've ever told each other that we did." Jenna became very teary-eyed.
"Just know that you will meet him one more time, and then you'll be together forever." Boris told Jenna.
"Yeah. My time shouldn't be too long from now either." Jenna began to cry more. "I'll never forget when he came back with the medicine and the first thing he did was come find me."
The next few days, Jenna and the rest of the town were very upset. Jenna didn't leave the cabin until that Monday. She went to the ceremony and cried the whole time. That night, she couldn't sleep because all she saw was Balto returning to town with the medicine. When she got up to look out the window she noticed the Northern Lights were shining with a luster she had never seen before. All of a sudden, she looked at them harder and noticed there was a pattern. A very familiar pattern. It looked like Balto. She began to cry and laid down. When she closed her eyes, she saw a bright flash and saw Balto returning to town with the medicine. Balto walked toward her and said, "Now we'll be together forever."
