Prologue

The brown dog ran across the frozen plains.

He looked behind him.

He couldn’t see his pursuers, but somehow, he knew that they were there.

“I didn’t want to do it,” he thought, “they just don’t understand that I’m… different, but it doesn’t matter, it’ll never happen again. I’ll never hurt someone I love again. I won’t lose control…”

He tried to remember, as he continued to run, the events that had brought him here, but he could not.

All he could remember is waking up one morning, a few days ago, and then seeing her….

The images of her were still fresh in his mind, and he almost threw up just thinking about it.

He glanced behind him again, and tripped over the fallen log in front of him.

The dog sprawled on the ground. He laid there for a minute, then spit out the snow that had lodged in his throat when he fell.

He heard barking and looked up.

“They’re getting closer.” He thought.

There was no doubt in his mind as to what would happen if they caught him.

She had been the leader’s sister, and the most beautiful dog he’d ever seen.

“Had been…” he thought.

He looked around, and saw a cave close by.

The brown dog struggled to his feet and limped into the cave.

He limped because the dogs had caught him once already.

He’d been lucky enough to get away once, they wouldn’t let it happen again.

He made it into the cave, and laid down.

The dogs came running over the hill, and the brown dog had to fight the overwhelming urge to run out of the cave.

“They probably won’t find me here.” He thought, and stayed put.

The leader, a black husky, slid to a stop when he saw the log where the dog had fallen.

The other’s that were with him, part of his team, stopped running as well.

The black dog sniffed the air, and took off running in the opposite direction of the cave.

“You never were too smart.” The brown dog thought.

He waited until the dogs disappeared over the next hill.

Then he calmly walked out of the cave and started running again.

Chapter 1

“I know you don’t like me to leave,” Balto said, as he stepped through the doggy door, into Jenna’s home.

“It’s not just that,” Jenna said, “it’s more them.”

She tossed her head towards the basket in the corner.

Balto walked over to the basket and smiled.

“How are they doing?” He asked.

The two little pups were sound asleep, but it was three in the morning, so they should be.

Jenna walked over and nuzzled him, looking down at the basket with him.

“They’d be doing better if their dad was around more.”

“Look Jen,” Balto said, turning away from the basket. “I can’t help it that we have had to make so many runs lately, it’s just the nature of the business.”

“I know,” Jenna said, walking over to Balto. “but this business is starting to take over your family.”

Balto nuzzled her.

“Jen, it’s just two more trips, then we’re done in Isaloosa for a while.”

“Yes,” Jenna said, “but that will make fourteen trips this month. I’ve hardly seen you since they were born.”

Jenna suddenly noticed that Balto had a white rectangle of cloth wrapped around his neck.

“What is that?” She asked.

Balto looked down at the scarf.

“Luke gave it to me,” he said, “the pilots wear them, to keep warm up there.”

“Oh,” Jenna said.

She sighed and walked back over to the basket.

Balto did as well.

One of the pups, the gray one, had woken up, and was starting to whine.

“Great,” Jenna said, “you sleep all day, and stay up all night.”

She nuzzled the pup, and it stopped whining.

“I see that Likea is awake.” Balto said.

“They’re always awake.” Jenna said.

Likea walked over, and woke up his sister, who began whining loudly.

Jenna sighed.

“And they like to be awake together.”

Balto laughed.

“Surely you’re not complaining are you?”

Jenna smiled, and climbed in the basket with the two pups.

“No,” she said, “but I would like some help, or a break every once and a while.”

She began licking the pup’s head.

“It’s okay Sheae, shh,” she said.

The pup stopped whining, and started to wrestle with her brother.

Balto leaned over the edge of the basket, and nuzzled Jenna.

“I promise, after these next two runs, I’ll stay here for a while, give you that break.”

He smiled at her.

“I might even take them for a week or so.”

Jenna smiled at him.

“Can you feed them?” She asked.

“Well… when they get a little older.”

Jenna sighed.

“Just be careful Balto.” She said. “You know that I don’t like that flying… whatever it is.”

“Jen, it’s an airplane, a Jenner, and it’s perfectly safe.”

“Yeah,” Jenna said, “so perfectly safe that Luke crashed it, and you and Kodi had to save him from freeing to death.”

Balto laughed.

“Jen, don’t worry.”

She looked up at him.

“You know I will.”

Balto sighed.

“Look Jen, I’ve got to go. Luke was prepping the plane when I left, and he’s probably looking for me.”

“Okay,” Jenna said, “bye Balto.”

“Bye,” Balto said.

He turned and began to walk towards the door.

“I’ll come see you as soon as I get back.” He said, then he stepped through the door.

“Balto,” Luke said, as Balto ran into the yard.

Luke knelt down and petted the dog.

“Where were ya boy, saying goodbye to the family?”

He laughed.

“Well boy, we’re ready to go.”

Luke stood up, and Balto followed him to the plane.

Balto jumped up on the wing of the Jenner and up into the copilot’s seat.

He looked down at Luke and barked.

Luke laughed.

“So, looks like you’re ready too.”

Then he walked over to the front of the plane, and spun the propeller.

The plane’s engine roared to life, and Luke jumped up into the pilot’s seat.

Balto watched as he set the trim and checked the controls.

Luke looked back at him.

“Here we go boy.”

Luke pulled the goggles that he wore while they were flying, down over his head, and released the brake.

The plane began to roll across the ground.

Not long after that, Balto was again soaring through the clouds.

Chapter 2

Jenna walked down Main Street, on her way to see Kodi, and see how his little family was doing.

She’d left the pups alone in the house, but Rosie was there, so they’d be okay.

She looked up, to see that she’d missed her turn.

She turned around and headed back the way she’d come.

Togo couldn’t believe his luck.

He’d found this small town, and it was perfect.

He was walking down these strange streets, thinking of where he was going from here, when he stopped.

“Whoa!” he thought, he almost said it out loud.

Across the street from him, was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

He watched as she looked around, and then turned around, heading back the way she came,

“So she’s lost,” Togo thought, “maybe she’s new here too.”

He turned, and began to follow her.

Jenna was walking down an ally way, when a voice stopped her.

“Hello.”

Jenna turned around.

A two toned brown dog was standing there, in the ally way.

He looked almost like Balto, but he was Dark brown all over, except for his legs, ears and face, they were a light kind of sandy brown. He had blue eyes, and was smiling at her.

Jenna had never seen him

Read this one a little while ago, but was too lazy to comment.:red: Anyway, GREAT JOB! It was shorter, but just as good! I've heard of that mental condition before, but I can't think of the name. Oh yeah, like ice husky said: Which is his name? Tango or Togo?
