“Hmmm…”Drei mumbled. Drei looked through the small cave opening.

“Kiche, you awake?” Drei whispered.

“No…” Kiche said, “Why do you care?” Kiche said sarcastically.

“There’s someone out there. Maybe we should go check who it is.”

“Ughhhhh……” Kiche said, “Fine, let’s go.”

Leaving the warm cave of the two wolves, the night stirred, and the wind began to blow harder and harder as the minutes flew by. Kiche looked through storm trying to find whatever it was that Drei was looking for.

“Drei! Are you blind?! There’s nothing out here!”

But, I just saw something. Drei thought. Then he heard barks in the distance. One after another.

“Mush.” A voice hooted in the distance.

“There they are! Kiche, look!” Drei exclaimed.

“I…I see it! Izit a bear or something?”

The storm had quieted down quite a bit, well at least to where you could see. Somehow, they had wandered into Nome.

“Drei, where are we? This doesn’t look like Anchorage to me.”

And it wasn’t, of course. Following the sled team from Anchorage to Nome, they had found themselves at the butchers shop. The snow storm was over and people gathered outside to run their errands. Kiche and Drei were mesmerized to see all the dogs. Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Chow Chows, Elk Hounds and all sorts of working dogs. They thought at least one wolf would be there.

Something caught Drei’s eye. He turned his head, and found his famous brother, Balto.

“Balto? Balto!” Drei cried.

Balto turned. He had no idea who this was. The only white wolf he has ever known was his mother.

“Um, Balto, is that…dog over there calling you?” Jenna asked staring at the deranged wolf.

“Can I help you?” Balto asked puzzled.

“Balto, it’s me, Drei. You’re brother…don’t you remember?” Drei asked.

“Hmmm…Drei. Not ringing a bell.”

“You have to remember!”

“Drei…he doesn’t know who you are. Maybe that’s not the ‘Balto’ you’re looking for.” Kiche said.

They slowly walked away. Drei was 100% sure that was Balto, his brother Balto. He couldn’t stand the fact that his once best friend and brother for life didn’t even recognize him. It brought a tear to his eye. Soon after they had left Nome, the water works had started. Kiche tried to console him as best as she could but nothing helped. He said the only thing to cheer him up, was the love of the his brother, Balto back. But he soon realized he would never have what he did before.

“Why wouldn’t he remember me? He was my best friend, and my brother! I can’t believe this!” Drei exclaimed.

“Maybe he’s not the Balto you’re looking for.” Kiche commented.

Drei, instead of replying, just wept. His ears perked up, he heard footsteps. Not of one, but two things. He turned around and saw Balto.

“Drei,” Balto murmured, “where’ve you been all this time? Why did you just run off like that?”

Drei could only sit breathlessly. Balto did remember him! What a relief to him.

“Balto, we were separated. I wouldn’t run away, especially from our family. Not from you,” Drei answered. Kiche and Jenna just watched them interrogate each other.

They walked back to Nome, all four of them, to rest in Jenna’s backyard. The sun was shining, and there were no clouds in the sky.

“Drei, I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you. It’s just…I was stunned to see you of all people.” Balto said.

“Balto, I was thinking, about our family. I remember Mom and our brothers and sisters, but what about our dad?” Drei asked.

Balto didn’t say another word until Kiche had to ask him if he was awake.

“Balto?” Drei asked.

“I don’t remember a thing about him. He was never around; I don’t think I’ve ever seen him.”

“I know I’ve seen him. Only a few times when I was awake and everyone else was asleep. I know he was pure bred Siberian. I just know it! He looked a lot like you actually.”

I like it. The ending makes it seem incomplete, though. Is
there more?
