Vietnamese soil, and was still on the American side. Brent poked his head out of the deep ditch and saw nothing. Having the inclination to duck, Brent did so and watched as an RPG came rushing through the space where his head had occupied. The small rocket hit the trees behind and threw soldiers forward and into the trenches. The enemy was firing back. Brent crawled through the muddy trenches and watched as his fellow soldiers were cut down in their prime. Finally, Brent ran out of trench, and more importantly, cover. Rick was evidently on the opposite side and caught sight of Brent and fired. Brent ducked back and took a few deep breaths.
‘’Wow, so this is what war’s like huh?’’ he thought and popped out, firing back. Rick dove to the side as a few of his men were killed. He popped up and joined into Brent’s game of Hide and Seek. The two continually popped up, fired, and disappeared out of sight again to reload, repeating the process once again.
Finally, the two ran out of ammo and soldiers to hide behind. It was just Rick Scythes versus Brent MacWolf. Rick chuckled and yelled over, well MacWolf, I must say that you are quite the fighter. Still, it was pure lucky you killed my men.’’
Brent shook his head.
‘’Life is wasted on your Rick,’’ he replied, ‘’and you know it.’’
There was silence on the battle field, until Rick tried to create another portal. It failed.
‘’Aw crap.’’ He said as Brent handcuffed his enemy’s arms behind his back.
‘’Now as I was saying; Rick Scythes, you are under arrest for kidnapping,’’ Brent then leaned forward and gave a low growl, ‘’so you’d better tell me where Ginger is before I make sure you don’t cause any more trouble. Got it?’’
Rick nodded reluctantly. He had no choice. Brent created his time portal and dragged Rick back to 2025.
K9 Space Colony Penitentiary, ten minutes later,
Rick watched as the laser bars of his containment cell were activated. He sat down on a small chair in his cell and replied, ‘’I bet you’re happy with yourself, aren’t you MacWolf?’’
Brent nodded with a grin present on his face.
‘’More than you will ever know,’’ he then got serious and down to business, ‘’but one thing is still not finished. You still haven’t told me where my girlfriend is, and I only have one day to find her. The guards have stun rods ready if you don’t cooperate with me.’’
Rick sighed.
‘’She’s in my secret base in the Pacific Ocean,’’ he answered, ‘’I put her there before sending you on a wild goose chase.’’
Brent smiled.
‘’Thank you for cooperating Rick,’’ he said, ‘’now be good and the guards might not be too merciful.’’
Brent then left his rival alone to the guards, who held their stun rods lightly in paw.
Brent needed some artillery, but due to the nature of this mission, General Macduff wouldn’t let him within five kilometres of the artillery room. So Brent got creative. He jumped into his Camaro and drove off to the site of an old ruin.
Old Nome District, 3:26 pm,
Brent stopped his Camaro near the site of a house that he had previously just shrugged off. This house, an old two-story Victoria, was a rundown structure. Brent got out and pulled out an oxidized key, trying it in the lock. The door opened and Brent walked into what was his home in 1954. Feeling along the wall, Brent managed to find the secret entrance to his lab, unaware that a dark figure was climbing down the stairs and following him.
Brent grabbed a flashlight and searched the room for the switch to his own armoury. Just as he found it, Brent heard a squeak coming from the staircase. He whirled around and shined the light on the figure; an old collie who looked to be 88 years old. Brent stared at the collie, trying to see who it might have been.
‘’What the hell are you doing in my house?’’ she exclaimed, grabbing a pistol from her belt. Brent put up his paws and said, ‘’look lady, this house belonged to me. I’m just getting a few things to rescue my girlfriend.’’
The collie put down her pistol.
‘’What’s her name?’’ she asked.
‘’Ginger Clayton.’’ Brent answered confidently. The old collie smiled.
‘’Brent.’’ She said. Brent was stunned.
‘’How in God’s name do you know my name? I haven’t even met you before!’’ he questioned loudly. The old collie kept smiling.
‘’Brent, it’s me.’’ She replied. Brent did a double take and finally put the pieces of the puzzle together.
‘’Ginger?’’ he gasped. The old collie nodded and said, ‘’Brent, you must save my younger self. I feel terrible pains along around my body, which means the Ginger you know is being tortured!’’
Brent growled and pulled the secret switch to the armoury. The wall slid up and revealed a hexagonal room with weapons lining each wall. Brent grabbed an assault rifle, three grenades, a 9mm handgun and some night-vision goggles. Closing the room, he looked at old Ginger and said, ‘’I won’t fail you.’’
Brent then left his old house behind, hoping his girlfriend might still be alive.
Over the Pacific Ocean, thirty minutes later,
Brent piloted his small aircraft over the broken surface of the Pacific, watching for his target. Suddenly, Brent received a signal on his GPS tracker; a small red target just a few miles from his current location.
‘’That must be Rick’s secret lair.’’ He said and flew down along the water’s surface.
The island was a forest-covered plateau with one tall peak that shielded the far side of the base from the elements. A sandy beach approached and Brent slowly landed his plane in the shallow waters. Once it came to a stop, Brent jumped out and cocked all his weapons, getting ready for anything. He treaded lightly between the tightly-packed trees in the forest as he headed toward the dome-like base. Suddenly, a bullet hit a tree behind him, and Brent took off through the bushes. There was a sniper in the trees, and Brent was running out of cover. Brent jumped behind a tree and felt another bullet strike the trunk, sending the vibrations up his spine. He grabbed his sniper rifle and took a quick aim. Brent leapt out from behind the tree and fired, hitting the sniper in the neck. He fell backward and landed on the ground quietly. Brent shouldered his rifle and headed toward the base.
The steel doors were vacuum-locked, so there was no way he could get in. So Brent spied another way; a garbage chute. Crawling over to the chute, Brent opened it and jumped inside. The chute was short, and deposited Brent into a large pit full of disposed waste. Brent stood up and shook the trash from his head. Suddenly, the walls started to move in closer.
‘’I’m in a trash compactor!’’ Brent thought alarmingly and immediately tried to escape, but with no luck. Finally, Brent grabbed the top of the compactor and climbed out just as the machine closed completely. Brent gave a sigh of relief and checked his surroundings. He was in the lowest level of the base, and Ginger would probably be on the top level. Brent un-shouldered his assault rifle and headed upstairs.
Immediately, Brent encountered some guards at the top of the stairs leading to the lobby floor. One turned and saw MacWolf, but only had enough time to breathe before he was thrown back by a burst of his enemy’s assault rifle. The slain guard’s partner received the same fate. Brent proceeded up the rest of the stairs, defeating guards as he continued at a steady pace. After about ten minutes of climbing and fighting, Brent reached the door to the highest room of the base. He kicked it down and saw Ginger sitting in the corner, bound and gagged. Brent rushed over and took the gag off. But just as he was about to start on the bonds, a paw roughly grabbed Brent by the collar and picked him up. Brent was spun around and faced Rick Scythes; the same dog he had put in jail.
‘’But how’d you…?’’ Brent started. Rick laughed.
‘’Fool,’’ he answered, ‘’did you really think I was that stupid? Why would I lead you on a wild-goose chase when I have the ultimate bargaining chip right in this very room!’’
‘’Ginger.’’ Brent replied angrily. Rick smiled.
‘’Took you long enough, ‘’he taunted, ‘’but now I must get rid of the thing that put me in jail all those years ago!’’
Rick threw Brent across the room, landing against the wall hard. Rick walked up and grabbed Brent by the feet, swinging him like he was competing in the Olympic hammer toss. Rick let go of his enemy, sending Brent into one of the large glass windows, creating spider web-style cracks in the pane. Brent bounced off the glass and landed face-down on the floor. Ginger growled and yelled, ‘’what’s your problem pal? Why are you doing this?’’
Rick took his attention from Brent’s limp body and turned to Ginger’s bound body.
‘’You want to know, do you,’’ the silhouette of a smile appeared on his
