The sun shone high in the sky, a young husky pup stood inside a box. He had a white and grey coat that made him look like a wolf pup. Outside the box a German shepherd and a brown red Husky smiled at their pup. They had, had 5 pups, but all had been adopted except for the wolf like pup.

The husky had a white muzzle, underbelly, and paws. She had a honey mist auburn bandana around her neck that stood out from her fur. It looked like she was a cowgirl in dog form with the way her bandana was tied around her neck. The German shepherd was almost black, but bore a few beige patches.

‘ I don’t think he’ll get adopted Fly. He looks like a wolf pup. This reminds me of what Balto told me about Aleu.’ The German shepherd said as he looked at the pup playing with a feather.

‘ That’s not true! He’ll be adopted, I don’t care if it takes all my life, but he’ll be adopted, Fang. Rex is nothing like Aleu!’ Fly, the Husky, said angrily.

‘ We should try tomorrow. I heard that there’ll be visitors coming to see Balto in the hospital.’ Fang said as he picked Rex up.

The next day, Fly and Fang tried again, but no one wanted Rex. Then an 8-year-old boy came up with his dad.

‘ Dad can I please have a puppy?’

‘ There’s only one left, but it looks like a wolf pup. You can’t trust them, might turn on ya.’

‘ Oh, but dad. He’s a German shepherd and Husky mix! My favourite.’

‘ I guess it’s true. He does look like a wolf pup. He’ll have to live with me until he can survive on his own.’ Fly said sadly.

‘ I’m sorry Fly. I am really sorry.’ Fang said as he nuzzled Fly and she nuzzled back.

One year later…

Rex and Fly sat by a fire.

‘ Mom? How come I haven’t been adopted yet?’ Rex asked

‘ You’ll understand one day. Try and catch some z’s. It’s late.’ Fly said as she rested her head.

‘ Can you sing me a lullaby?’ Rex asked.

‘ Sure. Which one?’ Fly asked.

‘  The one sang to me when I was younger.’ Rex replied.

‘ Ok, let me see if I can remember… oh yes.’ Fly cleared her throat.

‘Come, stop your crying, it will be all right
Just take my paw, hold it tight
I will protect you from, all around you
I will be here, don't you cry

For one so small, you seem so strong
My paws will hold you, keep you safe and warm
This bond between us, can't be broken
I will be here, don't you cry

cause you'll be in my heart
yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on, now and forever more

You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart, always

Why can't they understand the way we feel?
They just don't trust, what they can't explain
I know we're different but, deep inside us
We're not that different at all.’

Rex was soon fast asleep. Fly then looked outside and saw Balto’s boat. She also saw Balto howling.

‘ If only everyone knew the truth. Then I wouldn’t have to hide my past from anyone, especially Rex.’ Fly thought.

She then fell asleep with the faint sound of howling smoothing her.

A couple days after WQ...

‘ Why didn’t you tell us sooner?’

‘ I just wanted to keep you safe.’

‘ Yeah, you did a great job with Aleu! You let her runaway.’

‘ Kodi! Please, I didn’t want to tell any one of you. Don’t hate me please. It’s not my fault I’m half wolf.’

‘ Yeah. It’s your parents fault.’

‘ Don’t blame Aniu! She did nothing wrong. I know I should have said something sooner, I know that, but it has only been a week since I lost Aleu. I can’t lose anymore of you.’

‘ Just leave us alone, Balto. We want nothing more to do with you… EVER!’

5 red Huskies ran to Nome, leaving Balto alone on a boat.

‘ NO!!!’ Fly shouted.

‘ Fly? Is that you? What’s wrong?’ a Border collie asked.

‘ Nothing, just a dream Siaira,’ Fly answered. ‘ I’m gonna look for Fang, keep an eye on Rex. He’s an escape artist.’

‘ Okey dokey,’ Siaira looked around. ‘ Where has the fur ball gone? Fly’s gonna kill me if I don’t find him.’

On the outskirts of Nome, Rex ran to an old gold mine shack.

‘ Now I can be just like Balto. Half wolf, half husky. Searching for my daughter in the wilderness.’ Rex said as he played with a pile of boxes.

‘ Hey! Who’s there?’

‘ Huh? Who are you? A bear cub? Steele?’ Rex asked.

‘ Steele? The town’s enemy? I hate him. Trying to flirt with my mom when she liked my dad,’ an adult red female Husky said as she climbed out of a box. ‘ I’m Rose. Daughter of Jenna and Balto. Since I don’t meet many dogs and that my human forgot who my parents were, not many do know I’m their daughter, but I am.’

‘ Really? Your dad is my hero; I can’t believe he found a sled team in a blizzard! He’s amazing. How’d he do it?’ Rex asked.

‘ Um… family secret. No one outside our family is allowed to know. Sorry.’ Rose answered.

‘ Don’t worry, I under stand. He doesn’t want everyone to know his little secret. Even Duke can’t find out.’ Rex said.

‘ Yep, my bro’s old enemy until my dad got into a tight spot and Kodi had to save him and Duke.’ Rose said as she walked outside.

‘ I should get home now. Before Siaira finds me.’ Rex said as he ran outside.

‘ Bye Rex! See ya,’ Rose shouted as Rex disappeared. ‘ I need to find Dakoda and tell her about Mom’s concert.’

Over at Fangs house, Fly was worried.

‘ I keep having these weird dreams about when me and my siblings got angry at my Dad for keeping a deep secret away from us.’ Fly said as she walked around Fang.

‘ I see your problem. You’re worried that if our kids find out the same thing they’ll get angry at you and try to run away like Aleu.’ Fang said.

‘ Fang, I told you before. Our kids aren’t like Aleu!’ Fly
