The Birth of an Assassin

I looked at my parents' happy faces. I had no idea why they were smiling at me because I was young and naive and didn't understand anything at all. My mother didn't seem to care, though. She just comforted me into her warm body. My father nuzzled my mother, as her kind, complimenting voice echoed through the burrow walls. He thought to himself, and then looked straight into my eyes.

“I will name you Echo, my son, " he said. From then on I was known by what my father named me.

When I turned eight weeks old, I got to see the world. It was a very beautiful world, to say the least. I could not get enough of it because I wanted to see it all. I couldn't see it all by myself, unfortunately. Being the only male pup in my family, I had to watch over my two annoying sisters. They would just try to play with me whenever I wanted to be alone. I was definitely more of a loner than one who played around with others.

But then I decided to play a little game with them, just to get them off my tail. I grinned as I hid in the bushes and they started looking for me. It took them a long time and they never found me. It got so boring, I fell asleep. By the time I woke up I heard my parents calling for me; I opened my eyes to see the evening sky and was taken aback. “Was I asleep for that long?” I thought. I emerged from my hiding spot, wondering what was happening.

I asked, “Mom, Dad? Is something wrong?" I hardly knew what was happening, but by the look in their eyes, I could tell that they were upset. My father was walking back and forth trying to see if he could find something. My mom approached me closer and told me they've been searching for me and my sisters for hours and hours.

A while passed until my father lowered his ears and finally said "I'm sorry Mariah, I can't seem to find our baby girls."

I gasped in shock and sunk my head low in sorrow. If I hadn't played that game with them, then this never would have happened. I should have kept my eye on them. I felt my Mom embrace me tightly. She was trying to fight the tears from her eyes, but it was no use. She wept loud and hard, thinking out loud that something bad must have happened to them. Seeing her cry like this made me cry as well because I felt like I would never get to see my sisters again.

About a week passed since my sisters' disappearance and there was still no sign of them anywhere. By then I became much stronger and I was finally able to take care on myself. Well, killing small weak animals would be able to get me by, at least. One day, I decided to travel around for a bit to see new surroundings, so that I could become use to them in time. While exploring, I saw the strangest thing that a wolf had probably ever seen. It was man, the destroyer of wolves.

I thought I was hidden well into the bushes until a strange red dog sniffed me out. The dog didn’t attack me, but I still felt threatened. I was scared when the man looked right at me. He had brown eyes and brown hair. As he neared me, he reminded me of a grizzly bear approaching its kill. I whimpered because I didn't know anything about man. All I knew was that my father, Ansem told me that they killed wolves.

"This is supposed to be a wolf. Well I guess you’re just a baby, little guy. Maybe I can take you in and sell you. Anyone would buy you for a lot of money, “The man said grinning while his dog grinned as well.

I started to whine and howl because I didn't know what to do. My father never taught me how to attack a human when they lift me in air by my scruff. Suddenly I saw my parents running towards us, snarling with rage. They tackled the man down, making him drop me to the ground. I tried to get up; my eyes clenched tight trying to bear the pain in my side from the landing. I could hear the fighting and the gun shots firing everywhere.

Minutes passed, though it seemed like hours. Until then the gun shots stopped. I looked up and seen the man and his dog long gone. It seemed like they ran away like the cowards they were. I spotted my parents and ran towards them in excitement. When I looked at them, they didn't move. As I got closer, I seen that they were caked with blood

I nudged them, trying to urge them to move, but they didn't stir. Finally I realized what happened. My beloved parents were dead. They died trying to protect me. I stared at them, wide-eyed, and slowly slipped into hysterics. I didn't cry, no matter how many times I called out to them, even though I was feeling guilt and sorrow and pain, deep down I knew that my tears wouldn't bring them back. But I let my anger and sadness out right there on their dead bodies.

After I calmed down, I looked at my parents one last time. I had beaten them up pretty badly; I didn’t even know my own strength. I closed my eyes, turned around and I left the area, never looking back because I never wanted to see this place again.

~~~
One year passed and I was still on my own. I taught myself how to do everything, even how to track and kill. I had seen everything and experienced many things just in that year alone. It wasn’t long after that when I could take down an adult doe by myself. I came across a rabid wolf at one time, and that gave me fighting experience with animals more my size. I never saw man within that year, thankfully. I had enough trouble trying to survive without him.
One day, while traveling, as I normally did, I saw man once again. Before I could react, he shot me. I didn't feel myself dying, but I was getting abnormally exhausted. He grabbed me and started looking at me. He grinned and I was just confused before dozing off.
“You’re coming with me, buddy, you'll be a great fighting dog. “ He said as I drifted away. I woke up to darkness. Keeping calm, I tried figuring out where I was. I wasn't really able to fine out; I was still confused and trying to fight my tiredness. I heard the man who shot me talking from somewhere. I paused to listen. I couldn't really understand his weird speech, but he mentioned some place called Nenana.
He eventually let me out of my dark enclosed space, however instead of forest, there was a crowd of humans watching, and cheering as a huge barking malamute came into view. He seemed to be the dominant of the place. I took my eyes from the giant dog and looked at my environment, not knowing of anything that was going on. A man with a really loud mouth came in between me and the malamute.
“In the left corner is our all-star champion, Bruno! In the right side is a newcomer, his name is Echo the Assassin! “He announced to everyone, as he got out of the way.
I was confused at my title, “An assassin?” I thought while looking at my opponent. The man let go of the rope that held Bruno. The beast aimed his jaws at my neck. I instinctively jumped to the side and tackled Bruno to the ground. I went for his neck, in a heartbeat, without thinking. Before I could finish my attack, Bruno's owner kicked me away and I was dragged out of the open area. The man who took me away grinned and seemed to collect something from other men. It seemed that I won the match.
The same thing kept happening like the last time. One by one, I took my opponents down. It seemed like I was the new champion here. I liked the thought of me being dominant over others beside myself. Even at night, when the humans slept, dogs paid me to assassinate their opponent and I did my job. It seemed that I enjoyed killing others around here. I thought about something: I didn’t need that man who shot me. I could kill and run whenever I wanted. He was of no use to me, anyway. It wasn't long, until I escaped from that man.
He would chase me in fury wherever I went, even out in the wilderness. I was through with him. I didn't want to fight for that sleaze ball any longer, nor did I ever. I eventually lost all signs of him. It seemed like I saw a new city from below. I looked over to the sign and it said “Welcome to Nome, Alaska.” I grinned to myself evilly, because maybe I could reopen my job as an assassin here.
As the morning sun appeared from over the mountains, some dogs seen me and told me to follow them. Having nothing to lose, and being as confident as ever to take on anything, I followed them into an empty room. They led me to a large gray dog. He looked like a wolf but he wasn't. He seemed to be an Alaskan husky. I heard the door latch and the room became darker. I felt the gray dog’s eyes on me.
“I heard that you’re known as Echo the Assassin. Is that true? “The dog asked.
I looked at him and gave a grin. “Yes, I am Echo,” I said. Looking at him, I wondered why I was here anyway. Maybe this was my first mission that was getting ready to start.
“Nice to meet you Mr. Assassin," he said excited that I was really him. “By the way, I'm McKain." he said while showing off his brown collar.
“So what's my mission? How much am I getting paid for this?" I asked. I didn't want to get ripped off like a previous time. Last time I had to hunt down that cheapskate and ripped his throat out alive.
“Well, I will pay you this," McKain said while showing me a nice deed to a reservation.
