Daniel Buckley and Kenai and Nakao went through the gate and made their way to the boat deck.
At 12:45 lifeboat number 7 was launched it was the first lifeboat to be launched it was only half full. Kenai and Nakao made there way to E-Deck and to the ornate staircase to the boat deck they when they reached the A-Deck foyer they stood in awe and looked at the glass dome that was over the stairwell and looked at the clock with Honor and Glory carved into the sides of it. They walked out of the A-Deck foyer doors where they were met by a throng of men, women and children standing in the cold. Kenai lead Nakao to a lifeboat they were filling the lifeboat they were filling was Lifeboat Number the officer there named Murdoch he took Nakao's paw and tried pulling her into the boat she wrenched her paw from him and said “I don’t want to go” she said to Kenai he replied “maybe we can go together” he looked at Murdoch and said “my I accompany my wife into the lifeboat” Murdoch said “only women and children at this time sir” Nakao looked at him with a terrified look in her eyes he said “I will be fine now please go” she nodded and allowed a crewman to help her into the boat she looked at Kenai the whole time Officer Murdoch said “lower away” she watched as Kenai disappear from view the boat landed softly in the water and rowed away from the Titanic Nakao looked at the Titanic and could see the bow had sunk underwater and the lights that were still on were underwater cast a eerie glow on the water. Kenai watched as the boat rowed away from the Titanic he turned and walked into the A-Deck Foyer he sat down in a cushioned chair and watched as hundreds of people walked up the Grand Staircase he looked at the clock and watched it strike 1:00 he thought to himself “this is really bad what am I going to do” He got up from the chair and walked back out on the boat deck and watched as the Titanic”s band play waltz and ragtime tunes, he could feel the deck tilt towards the bow underneath his feet he thought “god this must if there is any proof that this ship is sinking it is this” he looked around and made his way towards the stern.
At 1:55 Lifeboat Number 4 was lowered followed by Collapsible C at 2:00, from the sea Nakao watched as the Titanic stern was lifted higher into the air, the glass dome over the Grand Staircase caved in pouring water now into the heart of the ship. Kenai walked back to the stern grabbing onto deck benches to keep himself from falling into the sea below him others however were not so lucky the fell into the frigid water below. Kenai was able to move himself to the railing and held on for dear life. He heard something like a loud gunshot and watched as the Titanic rip in half between the third and fourth funnels the bow section pulled the stern high in the air Kenai climbed over the rail until the words Titanic Liverpool were beneath him, the bow finally detached the stern floated there suspended like a great black thumb against the sky. Kenai thought “maybe she will float” but the stern began to sink like a elevator into the sea Kenai thought “this is it” the stern went under at 2:20 am April 15th, 1912.
Kenai swam to the surface and found the water was like having a thousand knives stabbed into your body he tried thinking but couldn’t think straight because of the pain.
Nakao listened to the endless chorus of screams for helped and wept thinking “Kenai is out there I must save him” the boat she was in never went back to pick up people, the screams for help started to fade away and around 3:00 they had completely stopped.
Kenai had managed to grab onto a deck chair and he was to weak to move his body he fought of going to sleep for he knew if he did he would never be awake again. He struggled to get any organized thoughts through his mind he finally was able to he thought “so this is how I go out freezing to death in the Atlantic” Kenai looked around and saw many people floating in the water their hair was covered in ice. Kenai vision became blurry he thought "no not yet" he couldn't feel any part of his body, he tried to drag himself alittle farther onto the deck chair but he was to weak to drag himself. Kenai floated there fighting to stay conscious his vision becoming even more blurry by the second in one last effort he tried to move himself but couldn't his vison went black he thought "no" his heart stopped Kenai's grip on the deck chair relaxed his last thought was “goodbye Nakao and my bro Balto” Kenai slipped off of the deck chair and floated away,
Later that day a ship called the Carpathia picked up the 705 survivors 1500 men women and children were not so lucky that night they were to perish in the black sea of the North Atlantic.
The Carpathia arrived in New York on April 18th to a crowd of news men and concerned relatives, Nakao got off the Carpathia and was confronted by news paper men asking her various questions she ignored all the questions and simply walked past the news paper men.
She was to stay with some of her relatives and reading about the hearings of the sinking of the Titanic that took place in the US as well as in Europe. Some days later a ship called the Mackey-Bennett was sent to collect the remains of those who had died they were able to recover Kenai’s body. As the bodies were brought to shore Nakao waited for the crew to unload the bodies. She watched as they were gently laid out on the pier, as she walked among them seeing men and women faces pale and eyes closed. She noticed the body of Kenai, his fur was matted the clothes he wore stuck to him. As she kneeled down thinking "this is a bad dream" she laid his head in her lap and started to cry. She saw his muzzle was drawn into a smile and his face relaxed. It was as if when the life left his body it took all his worldly cares with it. She put her hand on his chest and begged for the heart within to beat again but it wouldn't. Kenai was laid to rest in a cemetery in Halifax Nova Scotia were also many other Titanic victims were also laid to rest.
In 1985 the Titanic was found in 12,000 ft of water broken in two her bow and stern separated and in between the bow and stern section is the debris field that has pots, pans, corked champagne bottles, a dolls head, and shoes from those who landed on the ocean floor and all that is left is their shoes.
This poem was said in the show Titanic Anatomy of a Disaster and it sums up that even though the Titanic is rusting away she is still a beautiful ship and we must never forget her.
“Here is a gray lady and elegant lady a queen of the deep. A sad lady a silent lady are you now asleep can we learn from your sorrow to share. Teach us to understand and certainly to care but never again will there ever be a gray lady a elegant lady slip unwillingly into the sea.”
