I remember it very well; it was the day Mother and Father were going to split. Mother couldn’t live as a dog; Father couldn’t live as a wolf. That’s what mom said. I hated them for this. I couldn’t take it. I ran, just ran. I didn’t no where I was going I just ran as fast as I could. Even Father couldn’t keep up with me. I ran right into a huge, brown leg. I looked up. The leg belonged to a bear! I howled. Father must have been close because he was there in a flash. He jumped at the bear and tore at his neck. The bear knocked him into a tree. I was so mad at the bear. I tore at its leg. “You don’t hurt my Father!” I screamed. The bear took two swipes at my neck. I fell back, gasping for air. Father was up by then and attacked again. He tore up the bear’s back. The bear yowled. It threw father onto his back. Father howled. The bear tore father apart. Then the last fatal blow to his head, Father lay there in the blood stained snow. “NO!” I screamed. This time I didn’t care about any thing, I slashed and tore and bit. I killed the bear. Then I ran to Father. “Father?” I asked. He didn’t answer. I lay beside him. “No, no, no,” I whispered. Mother and my brother were there now. I looked up. They looked at me. I couldn’t look them in the eye. It was all my fault.

I ran, maybe if I ran fast enough I could escape what I had done, twigs cut my legs. I soon had a trail of blood following me. I couldn’t breathe; the cuts on my neck were open wide. I collapsed. I felt like dying right there. I got up and tried to howl but nothing would come out. I collapsed again and just lay there hoping to join my father soon.
