Kodiac watched his father soar through the clouds in the new, and improved, Balto Bush Plane. His tail was curled up, even more anxious to see Balto’s face in his plane. Kodi put his paw down onto the grass and smiled, looking at all of the flowers. It had been a long time since Kodi had last seen flowers, or even grass for that matter, because Nome was almost always covered in a thick coat of snow!

 

“Look! There he is!” Kodi yelled with excitement.

 

Jenna laughed a little and smiled.

“Living out a dream…” She murmured joyfully.

 

 

Balto looked down from the door at Kodi and Jenna; he howled as he shot right past them, he had to flatten his ears a lot, because the plane truly was, louder than a wild- eyed grizzly! The plane driver moved along, to get the plane across the ocean and getting ready to park in Nome. Balto looked down and saw Rosie running along trying to chase the plane, and behind him he saw Kodiac running beside Jenna.

 

Jenna slowed to a halt next to Rosie and gave a great yawn. Kodi laughed at Jenna and she smiled embarrassed under her fur.

 

“JENNA!!! Come on girl, we have to go home, say goodbye to your, boyfriend!” Rosie called, emphasizing the word boyfriend, meaning Balto.

 

“Ok mom, goodnight, I’ll be in my little den with the gang tonight” Kodi told.

Jenna nodded and then stopped in her tracks.

 

“Say goodnight to your father for me, will you son?” Jenna asked, as she ran back to Rosie.

 

“Yeah!! Sure!” Kodi yelled, but Jenna was already out of site.

 

 

 

The snow had completely disappeared from Nome, it was as if, the sun was 100X hotter than normal! Dogs were growing their summer coats, and even the sled dog teams boiled. Something was happening, because this wasn’t normal, and Kodi sensed it.

 

Balto was just stepping out of the plane, licking his lips after being given some Jerky, when he saw Kodi running up to him.

 

“DAD! DAD!!” Kodi yelled, Balto looked up, “Jenna wanted me to tell you something, uhh, umm, erm, well, I kinda, forgot, I’ll tell you tomorrow, I have to go and meet Dusty!” Kodi stammered quickly, he zoomed off, before Balto could say a word.

Kodi stood outside nudging a door open, to see his three friends lying, sprawled out on their beds. Dusty was on the top bunk, Kirby was on the floor, and Ralph was sinking into his middle water bed. Kodi stared at them all and his gaze turned to Dusty, each of them smiled until Kirby let out a huge, and long, burp.

 

“Excuse me” He murmured, embarrassed.

 

 

They all paused for a second and then burst out laughing, Kirby with his ears lowered down. But eventually, Kirby started to laugh too, and Kodi slowly made his way over to Dusty, still laughing.

 

“Hey, Kodi! How have things been going?” Dusty squeaked in her funny tone-changing voice.

 

“Great! My dad got to ride the new Bush Plane, my mum is back with Rosie, Boris is off with Stella and Muc and Luc are off playing hide and seek with a big, male moose!” Kodi exclaimed.

 

“What about you?” Kirby asked, cracking his paw, like he’d ran against the Bush Plane again.

 

“It’s too embarrassing to say..” Kodi giggled.

 

“Tell us!” Ralph barked.

 

“Yeah tell us!” Kirby agreed.

 

“Go on Kodi, please!!” Dusty bribed with cute looking eyes.

 

Kodi’s eyes shimmered as he stared at Dusty, and he quickly looked around at everyone, who were looking very anxious. Kodi put his paw on a shard of broken glass and yelped out in pain, but he still sighed, and looked up.

 

“Ok then, I guess, the great thing that’s happened to me is..” But Kodi was cut by Boris running into the room.

 

“Kodiac and friends, please, you come now, I show you something, very important!!!” Boris yelled urgently, Kodi smiled at everyone, knowing that what Boris thought was bad, was Muc and Luc wanting to play ‘Slosh!’

 

 

Kodi called his friends anyway and they all ran out, following Boris, who was running particularly fast for a snow goose such as himself.

Boris was staring at the woods just outside of Nome and there was nothing, but water. No one was sure how this had happened, but it was freezing water, like melted ice, but there was no snow to be seen in the whole of Nome! Kodi looked at his friends and then looked around, Boris glared up at him and then his eyes widened.

 

 

“OH NO!!!! Muc and Luc, they were playing hide and go peeky in the woods, and they can’t swim!!!” Boris yelled, in his Russian accent.

 

“Polar bears who can’t swim?” Dusty pondered around for a second, trying to work out was Boris meant by, ‘They can’t swim’.

 

“I know, Muc and Luc just aren’t polar bears!” Kodi told, mixed with a little laugh.

 

 

“One moment Muc and Luc think they frogs, the next they think they bear killers, those two can’t make up their minds, they are idiots! They are annoying, and stupid!! And I am NOT THEIR UNCLE!!!!!” Boris yelled, flapping around.

 

 

Kodi sighed and looked at Boris’ face, it had greatly changed, now his eyes were shimmering with fear for his two friends, and his stubby legs trembled.

 

 

“But I do hope they are ok…” Boris murmured, but only Kodi could hear him.

 

 

“Uncle Boris, did you really mean all of those nasty things you said about us?” A small white polar bear asked behind them.

 

 

“MUC!! LUC!! You are ok!!! But what about your game, what happen to that?” Boris asked, scratching the back of his neck.

 

 

Kodi smiled and then lifted up his paw, water dripped off of it, because, while they had been standing, the water had risen, and Kodi and Dusty were standing in a puddle of it.

 

 

“Oh great! Now how am I supposed to walk back into our den with wet paws?!” Dusty exclaimed, she sighed and lifted the opposite paw to Kodi.

 

 

Kodi looked at her with big eyes and kneeled down into the water, Dusty looked at him unsure, but Kodi insisted on her climbing onto his back, so she did. Kodi lifted her up, and carried her out of the ever growing puddle. Dusty was relieved to have been placed back onto the ground, because she can’t stand even the smallest of heights!

Dusty walked back towards Nome with Boris, Ralph, Muc and Luc, while Kirby stayed with Kodi.

 

“Aren’t you coming back, Kodi?” Kirby asked, twisting his head slightly.

 

“I have to sleep outside tonight, my dad is giving me a wake up howl, and I have to be ready outside” Kodi told.

 

“You sure?” Wondered Kirby, Kodi nodded, and walked outside of the door as Kirby stepped in.

 

 

Dusty climbed down from her top bunk and looked at Kirby, who had just entered the door.

 

“Where’s Kodi?” She asked, in a worried tone.

 

“He has to sleep outside tonight”

 

“Oh, well, I’m just going to go out and check on him then, either of you boys coming?”

 

“Too tired” Kirby yawned, and Ralph was already asleep.

 

“Fine then!” Dusty said, trying not to be rude.

 

 

She walked out of the door and saw Kodi lying on the floor beside their den. His ears folded and tail swished, in the thought of being woken.

 

“Kodi?” Dusty asked, lying down next to him, “are you sure that you want to sleep outside tonight?”

 

“I have to, look, I’m fine out here, it’ll take weeks for that water to rise, and by then, it will have snowed, which would keep the whole of Alaska safe from drowning!” Kodi told.

 

“You’re so smart, Kodi!” Giggled Dusty.

 

 

Kodi smiled and nudged her leg while he opened the door to let her in.

 

“Goodnight Dusty”

 

“Goodnight Kodi”

 

 

Kodi lay his head on his paws and slowly closed his eyes, everything was going alright, except for the fact that the water was rising, fast.

A few hours had passed and the water was half way up Kodi’s body, and still hadn’t woken him. When, suddenly, a great wave of the freezing water smashed onto Kodi, knocking him backwards into the door.

Kodi opened his eyes quickly and scanned the area, everything was water! Kodi tried to swim up, but it was no use, the water was pulling him along, and into the woods…

 

 

Kodi let out a long howl, but he had been carried too far away from Nome now for anyone to hear him.

 

‘I hope Dusty and the gang are ok’ Kodi thought, worridly, as the water took him further into the forest, he was finding it hard to stay above the water…

A pale grey wolf stood up on a rock as she looked around for dry land.

 

“I wish dad was here, he’d have rescued me by now, or maybe Jenna, she’d be worrying like mental if I still lived with them!” Aleu shouted to herself, as she tried to go higher
