Balto
A hero to some.
A legend to most.
He's no human,
But a canine.
A black husky with a large white spot on the belly.
A bark and howl, a wag and a woof.
The fastest dog in town,
The hero of Nome.
First stop, Nenana, Alaska.
Running through the cold snow.
Paws numb, harness pulling onto his fur as he leads the team.
Pulling a sled that had the cure.
Ice ahead!
Is it good?
Or bad?
It's too risky, must go around.
Adding miles to the waiting town.
Checpoint reached!
No one's there.
Keep going on,
No time is wasted here.
Panting and heaving, they see the town.
Using the rest of their strength to run home.
People yelled, people cheered.
"Hurray for Balto! The medicine's here!"
Stopping at the hospital, the kids are saved.
By the one canine, who is the fastest.
In the year of 1995,
A movie's made of the dog who beat the clock.
Instead of a dog, they make him a mutt.
But still the hero of the people in huts.
Two years after he saved the town,
A statue is made of golden bronze.
With Balto standing up proud with his harness on, words are carved in, but three stand out strong.
Indurance, Fedility, Intelligence.
A team of dogs ran 600 miles from Nenana,
All the way to the relief of stricken Nome.
In the winter of 1925.
