Seven Spanish Angels: The Ballad of Innocent Blood
Author : Lone Wolf_fanwriter
Date sent : August 06, 2006
Rating : PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned)
Category : Relationship/Love
Description : Set in the Texas town of Applegate in the last years of the Wild West era, this story centers around a storekeeper's daughter, Jenna, and the town outcast, Balto. The two meet, and become friends, but the town sheriff is jealous, and soon the destinies of Balto and Jenna are intertwined in a way neither of them ever expected. Rated PG-13 for violence and some cursing.
Excellent story! I really loved it. So, would the part where Balto was
fixing up Jenna's shop be inspired by the part with Sam and Kate in
Holes, by any chance? It seemed kind of similar. Anyway, this was
really well written, definately one of my favorites.
Hello, it's me, BaltoLuver63!
Sorry it took so long to get this review up and running, but
it's been a trying week...no, make that month. But, I'm
here, aren't I? Well, enough about that! On with the review!
I thought you did a very good job with this
one, considering what you had to work with from the start. I
must say, I was a bit surprised to find that this was a
Western themed fic, and not a war-oriented one...but it was
a GOOD surprise; it's fresh, it's hip and - most importantly
- it's both out of the box and well written to boot, .
Having read through your comments on reviews
issued by others who enjoyed this, I'll say that I agree
with you; though this is not my favorite piece that you've
written (Dark Eyes, Cold Heart still holds that coveted
position), I found, oddly, that I liked this a great
deal...which is surprising, seeing as I myself am not a huge
fan of westerns in general.
The whole plotline
was simplistic enough to be plyable and bend the rules of
logic, yet realistic enough to seem real to me. Balto and
Jenna's relationship was a slow and ultimately worthwhile
process. I liked your little allusion to 'Holes' whether it
was intentional or not, it still was a nice touch. As far as
romantics are concerned...have you been taking notes from me
or something, !? (I'm kidding; I'm not THAT good!) You
really have made a large amount of improvement in this area
from the last fanfic of yours that I read. Balto and Jenna's
relationship is like a flower; following it from the first
tiny spout to its eventual bloom. You've done a great job!
Yay!
The action was also well laid out and
refreshingly realistic. I can't tell you how annoying it
gets to read dozens of fics where the characters, regardless
of how many rounds they have in them or where they were hit,
still continue to brawl it out like nothing's happened! The
violence was toned down enough to be tasteful, yet
descriptive enough to satiate that part of me which craves a
bloody and almost balletic confrontation (can't help myself,
.)
Though the passionate love scenes and
gritty gunfights were certainly key elements, the real
standout in all of this was the trial, and the emotional
drive you instilled in the characters. Throughout the whole
thing I was rooting for Balto to come out on top...and was
shocked to hear him sentenced to hang! It was all good in
the end though, as Jenna - not without some internal
conflict - comes through and rescues her man (which I also
though was another nice touch, seeing as it's most often the
MEN who do the rescuing.) It really helped to solidify
Jenna's 'tough-as-nails' side of her nature that not many
writers seem to like to touch upon these days. Way to go
Jenna! You go girl! Show that man of yours your viking
warrior's spirit! You don't take flack from NOBODY!
Woah, sorry, . Got a bit carried away. Ahem.
Anyway, though I was a bit saddened by the fact that Balto
died *gasp* and soon after Jenna followed suit *faint* - not
without avenging her fallen lover first though - I was
somewhat pleased with it. Though I'm as enchanted by the
thought of the two lovebirds gunning down their foes and
riding off together under a blood-red sunset as the next
Balto fanatic, I must admit your slightly more macbre
twist-ending satisfied in me the desire to see something new
and largely untried! Good for you!
I really
hope you liked this review as much as I liked your story. In
a way, it reminded me of all the GOOD western movies I've
seen over the years (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly comes to
mind, as do Unforgiven and A Fistfull of Dollars) and it
gave me something fresh and new in a gene that's had little
(if any) activity as far as Balto Fanfiction is concerned!
Great job, and may you write on for as long as you brilliant
mind continues to serve you!
