and was realizing how much his flying around all the time, instead of running, had hurt him physically.

Jenna was behind Balto, and Duke followed after them.

Another shot rang out, and Duke fell to the ground.

Jenna stopped.

Balto looked behind him, to see her run to his side.

Balto hung back.

Jenna made it to Duke’s side in just a few seconds.

He was laying on his side, a red stain on his shoulder.

“Duke, are you okay?” She asked.

Duke groaned.

“I… I’m not going to make it.”

“Come on,” Jenna said, tears coming to her eyes. “Get up, please, come on.”

Duke smiled.

“I enjoyed our time together.”

Jenna looked at the ground.

Duke sighed.

“I’ll hold them for as long as I can, you two hy out of here.”

Jenna nodded.

Duke looked toward the men and sighed.

Jenna turned and began to walk away.

“Jenna.” Duke said.

She turned back to him.

“He came back for you, maybe things aren’t as bad as you thought.”

Jenna pondered this, and ran back to Balto.

The two watched, as Duke stood up.

Duke stood up, resolved at what he had to do.”

Duke started running.

The first shot hit him about twenty five yards out.

The bullet slammed into his shoulder,

Drake stumbled and fell.

Another shot hit his chest, and he fell again.

Duke gritted his teeth at the pain, knowing that it would soon be over.

HE stumbled toward the men, and, about five yards out, the two men fired again.

Duke felt the bullets slam into this chest.

He fell.

Duke knew he wouldn’t be getting up this time.

He laid there, as the man, that Jenna had bit, walked over to him.

Duke closed his eyes, and when he opened them, he found himself staring down the barrel of the rifle.

Jenna and Balto saw the fight end.

A single but loud pop filled the air, as the man pulled the trigger.

Duke was pitched over backwards onto his back.

He didn’t move.

.The two men laughed, kicked the dead dog, and walked away.

It was then that Jenna realized that they were after Duke, not her.

She turned to Balto, there were tears streaming down her face.

She sighed.

“Let’s go home Balto.”

Balto and Jenna walked slowly away.

Chapter 12

Dash was awoken by someone shaking him.

He opened his eyes.

“Kalia!” He said.

He was instantly awake.

“Are you…. you’re alive!”

She smiled, then her smile faded and she sighed.

“No thanks to me.”

She looked up at him.

“Thank you for coming after me.”

He smiled at her.

“Kalia, you’re my daughter, I’ll always love you, always take care of you.”

She smiled.

“Thanks.”

Then another thought crossed her mind.

“Were you alone?”

Dash sighed.

“No.”

Kalia felt her heart drop.

“Who was with you?”

Dash sighed again.

“June.”

“Is she…”

Dash looked at the ground and nodded.

“Oh no,” she said. “This is my fault.”

Dash looked up at her.

“No, no it’s not, don’t think like that.”

She smiled.

Dash walked over by himself.

“June… dead?” He thought.

It was hard for him to believe, but he’d seen it himself.

Dash realized he would miss her warm smile that always seemed to cheer him up. He’d miss her laugh… hell, he’d miss her.

He sighed.

“God, how could I have been so stupid, so afraid to move on… I… I should have….”

He hung his head.

Dash sighed, and walked to the entrance of the chamber they were in.

He peeked outside and saw two guards.

“Only two?” he thought.

Dash walked back to Kalia.

“There are two guards, can you take one of them?”

She nodded.

“Okay,” Dash said, “on three. One…. Two….”

He stopped as he heard growling outside.

There were barks, and then the sound of something hitting the chamber wall quite hard.

Then there was more growling, and the sound of snapping teeth.

A yelp came from outside the chamber.

Then more growling and the guard came flying through the chamber entrance, rolling to a stop in the center of the room.

A gray wolf stepped through the entrance.

She smiled.

Dash couldn’t believe it.

He ran over to her.

“Oh my God.” He said, “you’re… you’re alive!”

June smiled, blood ran down her face, where she’d been injured.

“Yeah,” she said. “I see you found your daughter.”

Dash looked behind him to see that Kalia was out of hearing distance, then he made a decision that would change his life forever.

“June,” he said, “I’d… I’d like her to be our daughter.”

June smiled.

“Really?”

Dash nodded.

“I… I realized just how much I cared for you when I thought you were dead.”

He smiled.

“Sometimes it takes losing something to tell how much it really means to you.”

She smiled.

“We better hurry.”

Dash nodded.

“Let’s not tell her yet, we’ll tell all of them at once.”

June nodded, leaned over and nuzzled him.

Dash noticed her shoulder was laid open. Bright red blood glistened on her beautiful sliver coat.

Dash looked concerned.

“You’re hurt?”

She nodded.

“He got in a good hit, but I’ll be okay, let’s go.”

Dash nodded.

“Come on Kalia.”

The three of them ran from the chamber.

It took the three of them about an hour to get back to the cave.

Dash and June now stood in front of all of his children.

“I wonder how they’ll take this?” He thought.

He smiled.

“Kids, I’ve got some great news.”

He looked at June, and they both smiled.

“June is going to be joining our family.”

The kids all smiled, except for Talkeet, he looked somewhat shocked, but then he too smiled, and they all walked up to the two.

“That’s great,” Talkeet said.

“Yeah,” the other’s agreed.

June stepped up to them.

“I… I know I won’t ever be able to replace your mother and I wouldn’t want to, but… I want to do as best a job as I can.”

Kalia laughed.

“It’ll be nice to have a female around again, dads don’t understand daughters very well.”

All of them laughed.

Dash looked to June.

“I’m going to go tell Aleu of the new… arrangement, and I’ll be back soon.”

June nuzzled him.

“Go ahead Dash.”

Dash walked out of the chamber, feeling the happiest he’d been since Steele’s fateful attack.

Epilogue

Balto sat on Jenna’s porch.

He was happy.

Everything always seemed to turn out alright, though this time it had been much too close for Balto’s comfort.

He had repaired his relationship with Jenna, and her family had accepted him once again.

Balto still felt that Flash was mad at him, but he didn’t say anything.

Jenna had forgiven him, on the promise that it would never happen again.

Balto was confident that it wouldn’t.

Even now, weeks after Jenna had allowed him back into her life, there was some distance between them, that didn’t used to be there.

It would take time.

Balto sighed.

He’d managed to hurt everyone he truly cared about in that one night.

He’d almost… no, he had lost Jenna, his family, his friends…. all for what?”

He couldn’t even remember the events of that night, couldn’t remember what it had been like.

He smiled.

But that was all behind him now.

He had a new life, a clean slate, and he planned to keep it clean… forever.

As he was sitting there thinking, a dog walked up the porch and sat beside him.

“Hey Balto,” Angel said.

Balto smiled.

“Hi Angel.”

She smiled at him.

“Hey, we’re in town for a few days, and I was just wondering if… if you’d want to go for a walk, and talk… just talk, I promise.”

Jenna just so happened to look out the window as Angel walked up the steps.

She decided she’d see what Balto would do, and so, kept watching.

The two of them talked for a minute, and then smiled, and stood up.

Balto began to walk down the steps.

Jenna’s heart dropped to the floor.

She sighed, and a tear came to her eye.

“Why did I ever think I could trust him again?” She said aloud.

She decided to go confront him. He could stay with her for all Jenna cared, they were through.

Balto walked down the steps, then stopped.

“What am I doing?” He thought.

He looked at Angel.

He sighed.

“Angel… I can’t.”

She smiled at him.

“Can’t what?”

“Can’t…. can’t be with you.”

“What?” She asked.

“It’s… it’s not right.” He said.

She looked at the ground and nodded.

When she looked up, there were tears in her eyes.

“Balto, I… I love you.”

Balto took a step back.

“Angel, I…. I don’t love you.”

She looked as if she’d been
