or Jenna’s last days would be spent on the ocean floor. Brent jumped into his control chair and pushed the throttle to half-power. But the Blue Marine 2 did nothing.

‘’What the hell?’’ Brent questioned as he tried again. This time, the Blue Marine 2 shuttered and sank.

‘’What did you do?!’’ Lady asked angrily. Brent turned around and yelled, ‘’IT’S NOT MY FAULT!!!’’

Suddenly, Brent noticed the fuel gauge.

‘’Jesus Christ, the sub’s outta gas!’’

‘’So now what?’’ Lady questioned. Brent smiled, but Lady could see the sweat pouring down his face.

‘’We do the most logical thing,’’ Brent picked up the comms microphone and yelled into it, ‘’HELP! BALTO! TRAMP! ALEU! ANYONE!!!’’

Meanwhile in the debris field, Balto and Tramp were covering their last sector of the debris field. Suddenly, the Deep Rover’s spotlight caught a shiny object. Balto zoomed their camera in and saw the words EDMUND FITZG. The sand blocked out the rest, but that was all the two needed to see. Balto grabbed the controls for the mini-rover attached to the Deep Rover. The mini-rover was named Jason Jr. in honor of the rover used on the first exploration of the Titanic wreck. Balto piloted the small rover toward the bell, using its magnetic arms to snag the metal bell. The magnet attached itself to the bell and Balto brought the rover back to their sub. Docking the rover, he locked it into place. Balto and Tramp were about to ascend, when they heard Brent over the microphone.

‘’Help!’’ he yelled.

Balto picked up the mike.

‘’Brent, what’s the matter?’’ he asked.

‘’Balto? Where the hell have you been? I’ve been calling for the past few minutes!’’

Tramp spoke up.

‘’Sorry, I had the mike on mute.’’ He said sheepishly. Brent nearly blew a gasket.

‘’Tramp, if I live through this, you’re a dead dog!’’ he yelled.

‘’Brent,’’ Balto interrupted, ‘’how’re we going to get you up to the surface? The sub can’t support the weight!’’

Brent knew he was in trouble. He held his chin and came up with a risky plan.

‘’Balto, I have an idea, but it’ll be a gamble,’’ he replied, ‘’you see, there’s an escape pod in this sub, but it can only fit two persons. We have three on this sub, which means one person has to stay behind.’’

The line went silent.

‘’And since Lady and Jenna have kids, I vote to stay behind.’’ Brent finished.

‘’Brent, that’s crazy-talk,’’ Tramp exclaimed, ‘’you can’t!’’

‘’Too late Tramp,’’ Brent answered, ‘’I’ve made my decision.’’

Brent picked up Jenna and placed her in the escape pod. Lady climbed in and gave Brent a small peck on the cheek.

‘’You’re a true hero Brent.’’ She said. Brent smiled and asked, ‘’can you tell Ginger I went out a hero?’’

Lady nodded and Brent pressed the launch button for the escape pod. It shot out into the water and floated to the surface. Brent sighed as he watched the pod drifting upwards.

The Larka drifted silently as the pod broke the surface alongside the ship. The ship’s crane reechoed down and picked the pod up setting it on the Fantail. In a matter of minuets Jenna was pulled from inside and on her way to the ship’s Hospital. Lady stumbled out too. Aleu ran up alongside her. “You ok Lady?” Lady looked up at Aleu. “Its Brent he is trapped inside the wreck he is….” Lady fainted. The stress had snapped her. “Ok we got a fainter, get her below deck.” Aleu yelled out. A few minutes later the Deep Rover too broke the surface. Grappled in its arm was the shinny brass bell.

Deep on the sea floor Brent sat inside his stranded sub. The air was getting thinner. “Shit, this is the way it goes.” He sead. Just then a voice echoed in his mind. “Brent, get off your arise. You never would take anything setting down!” it was the voice of Ginger. Brent suddenly was motivated. “I have one last trick.” He pushed a button. This blew the ballast tank on the sub. Forcing compressed air into the tanks. The sub shot up like a bottle rocket, it shot up threw deck after deck until it breached the wreck and headed for the surface. The sub surfaced just off the port bow of the Larka. The sun was shining and the sea was calm as Brent opened the hatch. Fresh air flooded the interior of the sub. All was right with the world.

The new exhibit wing is finally open. A dedication ceremony is in full swing as Brent and Ginger walk into the hall of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The hall is filled with memorabilia and models as the crowd enjoys the ceremony. The first people Brent sees are Balto and Jenna. Both look fabulous. Jenna’s coma had broken just a few days ago and the doctors had declared that she was free of any brain problems. Brent waved the Balto. Balto waved back. Next Brent walked around a corner and saw Lady and Tramp looking a model of the great Fitz. Tramp was explaining the great complications of running an ore freighter to Lady. Brent decided that he could talk to the two later on. Finally he came to the end of the hall were in a seceded off part of the room, on a small replica of the top of the bridge was the bell. Brent stared at his reflection in the brass. Behind him the now familiar face of Angel appeared. “Got to admit it looks wonderful.” She said Brent turned to face her. “Hard to think that you almost died for it.” He said angel smiled. “You think getting that thing back was hard, shit, you should have been around when I retrieved Titanic’s log book, it took me almost a month to escape that disaster. You want to see the scar!” Brent stepped backwards.

‘’Uhhh…no thank you…I can imagine.’’ He replied. Angel shrugged.

‘’Suit yourself.’’ She answered and walked away. Suddenly, Brent felt a hand touch his shoulder. It was Ginger. She gave her boyfriend a peck on the cheek and said, ‘’that was quite brave of you to do that Brent.’’

Brent shook his head.

‘’Nah, it seemed like the best thing to do at the time.’’ He admitted.

‘’Still.’’ Ginger said and stared into the bell. Brent did so as well. Inside his head, Brent sang the words of a song that he had heard during his dive to the Crimson.

The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril.
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

End

Well folks, there ya have it! Another great story by Rail Wolf and myself. I’d say we make a great team. I’d also like to dedicate this story to the souls lost that November night on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Rail Wolf, I’m sure you’ve got something to say.

Not just to the 29 of the great Fitz…but to all the sailors who have lost there lives to the “Witch of November”. To the Griffin, the first ship that sank of Lake Superior. To the Bunocburn, who disappeared with out a trace, and is still seen as a ghost. To the Victoria who was denied a place in the Harbor and spent the night in a terrible gale just off the coast of Sue St. Marie…she went down with a lose of all hands. And of couse to the 29 men of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

May they rest in peace.

“It was the chaos of nature that created this world of ours. And 20 years ago it was the same chaos that ended the journey of twenty-nine men. We must remember that that chaos is below us now. But it is now one of quietness and solitude. And may the bell that has gone down with this ship be a sign to all to remember that night.”
